Summary: Video Information to Answer All Questions
Review: Madonna and her husband Guy Ritchie had their first professional collaboration when they decided to let Guy direct the video for "What It Feels Like for A Girl". Since Guy has only done gangster movies so far, many fans reacted surprised after hearing he would direct the video for this beautiful ballad. The result of the three day video shoot in LA in February, was a little gangster movie of his own. Not the ballad from the album was used, but instead the dancy Above and Beyond remix, which leaves out all the lyrics except the chorus. "This is an angry song and I wanted a matching visual with an edgy dance mix." Madonna said. "In the video I play a nihilistic angry woman acting out an old lady's fantasy and doing things girls are not allowed to do." And quite some fantasy it is! We see Madonna pick up an old lady from a retirement home (called Ol' Kuntz Guest Home) and then leave with a yellow sportscar for a joy ride. She crashes a guy's car, steals money using a stun gun, shoots cops with a squirt gun, blows up a gas station,... "It's a violent video, but not too violent" Liz Rosenberg commented. In the US, MTV and VH1 decided to ban the video after only one airing on April 21st in a news special. AOL streamed the video at the same time. MTV Europe did play the video, but only after 10 pm. Other music channels showed it in the daytime. It was only the second Madonna video to be completely banned by MTV US; "Justify My Love" being the first. If you think it is the third, well "Erotica" got airplay after 10 pm. Fortunately you can watch the video, but you must purchase it!

Review: I never saw this video until I purchased it, as it was banned from being shown on TV. I don't understand why it was banned, what with all the other things that are shown, but either way, it's a must-have for any Madonna fan.

Review: Back in March, I was stunned to hear the news that after the long 12 years of notorious controversies over Madonna's videos like "Justify My Love", "Like A Prayer", and "Erotica", the station banned her again, this time, for the haunting "What It Feels Like For A Girl" track from the 2x platinum "Music", claiming it was too violent. Being a huge Madonna fan, I promptly bought the DVD a couple of weeks later. I was left confused after watching the video. I couldn't understand what was so violent and risque about this video. I personally found Eminem's "Stan" or the infamous Jackass to be more violent. What you see in this video is disturbing, but far from violent. Madonna goes on a joyride around the town with an old lady on her side. She winks at some flirty men at a stop light, then quickly U-turns around and slams right into them. She steals money by stun gunning a chubby dude at an ATM, messes with some police, and finally wraps her car around a post at the end. Sounds pretty bad, right? Well, none of what I just said is really seen in a violent manner. The crash into the flirting men at the stop sign is seen for no less than a split second and the other things like the stun gun are not really seen, but implied. The most violent part of the video is the car crash at the end. It is very realistic, and its probably why MTV had second thoughts about it. Besides that, the video is clean. No gore, no nothing. The video is incredible, and its clearly one of her most artistically shot and most mysterious videos. It really raises up a lot of questions. And Madonna looks beautiful! Above all, the video is great, but if you're looking for a violent action packed fest, think again.

Summary: Why was it banned?
Review: I just don't get why it was banned? Other than an attempt to market the video on DVD, I don't see a purpose. The video is good, it's very good. It's violent, but not as much as most shows on television. I just don't see it matching the debate of Justify My Love, or Madonna burning crosses for Pepsi. As I said, the video is really very good, possibly one of the top 20 ever made. I don't think the video is worth the price, unless you're a die hard Madonna fan, in which case buy the new greatest hits DVD that includes this.

Review: She's the ultimate marketer for this single by having it banned. It's good although I believe she should've cast a different variety for the men. Let's have the Hunky set play bad guys! Say George Cloony, Brad Pitt, Jon Bon Jovi (I'd love to see him get shot!) or better yet handsome hubby Guy Ritchie play the men being avenged upon. The Cosmo girl sect would never approve, but most women could understand these feminist views much better! I give it two stars because no DVD is worth wasting all that space, but one more star because i love the remix.

Summary: Another great music movie...
Review: As with many of Madonna's videos this reaches a level beyond "music video." The video is beutifully shot, clever and rather disturbing. It compliments the song perfectly. What I found most interesting upon watching was that this was banned from MTV due to the slow motion car crash at the end. I found it rather odd considering what they do play and particularly odd considering the fact that Aerosmith used a similar joyride/car crash in 'Living On The Edge' several years ago.
Bottom line, as long as she's going to turn out mini-movies, Madonna should start releasing DVD albums, so we can get the all in one package rather than having to piece it together!

Summary: This is what it feels like
Review: I just purchased this video and I don't see why it was banned. This is such an awesome video by Guy and Madonna. The stuff that does make it on Mtv, et al., objectifies women to the point where people don't even see a human being anymore. The average video, from men and women performers conveys the idea that women are there for men and for sex. Madonna takes her video and says, "I don't think so." Guy and Madonna's violent portrayal of "What It Feels Like" reveals an alter ego. Madonna is running around like a secret agent and messing with men who objectify her. It's sheer brilliance and I don't understand people today. Madonna rules!

Summary: Great video (and a little bit of a catch)
Review: Madonna was smart to have her husband write the background for the video. This has so much symbolism in it that I would say it's one of her more high-brow videos with depth. To say that it should have been banned was pretty stupid in my opinion. It wasn't that graphic and I think MTV and VHS went overboard with the whole notion of it being "banned." Please. There are plenty of videos out there that have more violence in it (or at least SUNG about) than this one. Madonna's character is a battered victim who just simply strikes back on a destructive suicide mission, taking along her grandmother (?) who is also in a helpless life. She strikes out at men particularly, with a stun-gun, running them over, squirting the cops with a squirtgun, stealing cars and other various "violent" actions. There's no blood, and one bruise (and that's on Maddie's ribs.) Aside from that, everything is implied of what's she's doing. Example: it shows her going up to a man with a stun gun and then walking away with him passed out and money in her hand; you don't see the actual event. It's implied. Apparently, MTV and VHS realized that their audience has an active imagination and pulled it. Of course, you don't hear of any complaints whatsoever from Madonna about this action because long-time fans remember another banned video called "Justify my Love" which made millions of dollars for her (and still is.) She's making money off this video and she's not about to complain. Now the part that ticks me off: if you saw the video and loved the song, that particular version of "What it Feels Like for a Girl" is ONLY available on the DVD. There may be TWO CDs out on this single, and one has a REMIX of the song, not the actual video. So, in other words, you have to buy the DVD to get the song. Kind of a rip-off in my opinion. It's a good video and still gives me chills when I watch it in its entirety, but I wish she would have released it on CD.

Review: this is an awesome video--it demonstrates some great film work. It's a lot of fun because they play on words and use symbolism...what can I say, Madonna rules!
