Summary: Let's Get Serious...
Review: Is this absolutely perfect? No. It's imperfections are very well documented and (mostly) exaggerated below. Having said that, it cannot be stressed enough how outstanding the performance as a whole is on this DVD. I won't go on with how I've been a rabid Rush fan since the '40s and all of that jazz. Let's just say that if you appreciate good music, thoughtful lyrics, outstanding musical talent, or if you are or ever have been even a casual Rush fan, you HAVE to have this.
The set list is excellent. A near-perfect retrospective tour. The execution is again nearly perfect. Hard to believe I'm not watching these guys in their 20' or 30's. Some performances on this disc have to be among the best they've ever done.
I thought that in the '70s, Alex was was slightly at the fore of the band, as far as talent goes. In the '80s, it sort of switched to Neal. I have tremendous respect for all three as musicians and think that they are all immensely talented, but after hearing the CD first and then the DVD, I have to say that Geddy Lee is a monster. His performance should not be missed. Incredible.

Summary: Doesnt do the band justice
Review: I love Rush, and I saw them live on the Vapor Trails tour and was blown away. Sadly, this DVD doenst represent that experience at all.

The mix is awful. Filming at the end of the tour was a mistake, they all looked tired and Geddy sounded bad. Worst of all, it was filmed and edited like a superbowl half time show. Whoever made this movie wasn't a Rush fan. You never get to see the guys actually playing their intruments, which is the essence of this band. Instead, they attempted to make them look like 20yo rock stars which just didnt work.

My gold standard concert DVD is Queen live at Wembley. That is a 18 year old performance which makes this Rush DVD look very weak.

Summary: Crowd Noise. Where's the vocals?
Review: I was so excited about seeing this dvd because I read a lot of great reviews. Well I put it in my dvd player and all it was was crowd noise. I messed with the remote control for an hour trying to get the sound quality right. All it gave me was a headache, and I've got concert dvds heavier than this!

Summary: Unique concert experience.
Review: I too must agree that the sound mix is far from that of the live albums RUSH has put out. I truly expected more from this DVD in that respect.

However, the videotography is fantastic. It was a thrill being able to watch Alex bend strings, Geddy pluck away and Neil... WOW!

If you are only interested in the music, I would suggest the CD. But, if you want an unforgettable concert experience, one not matched by even the front row, check out this DVD!

"Tight Lines!"

Summary: Near Perfect Live Concert DVD
Review: This package gives us exactly what it offers. Rush, not only in Rio, but feturing RIO!! The roar of the crowed is so passionate. aprarently no one ever knew how HUGE Rush is there! And they've all been waiting YEARS and YEARS to see them! And I know, its a treat! I saw them for the first time (hopfuly not the last) on this tour as well and it was easily one of the best concerts i've ever been too!
Which is why the idea of this DVD excited me! I live in the US, where Rush isn't exactly too popular. infact alot of my friends poke fun at me for liking them. I can understand why they would, but at the same time fell sorry for them. The music of Rush is not your avrage prog-rock band. Sure the musicianship is steller, but the song wirtting, lyrics, and subject matter is memorible, and meaningful! And this concert will defently show you how true this is.
I found no problem with the sound mix. It really feels like your at a concert. No overdubs, or tricks. This will not impress any audio/videophiles, but It will impress hardcore fans. RUSH RULES!!

Summary: Looking for 3 hours of roaring crowd? You found it!
Review: This is a must have for Rush enthusiasts, but only because it is the only concert DVD Rush has put out. I love Rush's music, I like the song selection, and I thoroughly enjoyed the concert, (though it was not as good as the "Test for Echo" concert). I even liked the crowd ... for about the first 30 seconds, but the constant drone of the crowd for three bloody hours is too much.

Now, I can appreciate the crowd's enthusiasm of seeing Rush for the first time in Brazil, and I'm happy to see that there are so many fans there, but perhaps Rush could do the connoisseurs in their audience a favor and record a DVD at a venue with a mature audience, for example, the Gorge at George in Washington State. This way fans everywhere can enjoy the concert (not to mention the awesome scenery) over and over again in the comfort of their own living room for many years to come.

Beyond the crowd, the musical sound quality is rather muddy and the camera switches are enough to put an epileptic into grand mal seizures. The video editor may think he's an artist, but he's really just inexperienced. After my first time out with a video camera, I learned that a constantly moving or quickly changing picture is tedious to watch.

The DVD gets at least 2 stars just because it's Rush, but I gave it a 3, because I liked the Documentary "The Boys in Brazil" and the MX Multiangle recordings of YYZ and La Villa Strangiato. It's sad that the best part of a concert DVD is the extra features, isn't it:(

Summary: Rush Rules and this DVD is the PROOF!!!!
Review: I'm right in the middle of watching the DVD as I'm writing this review. I've been a fan of Rush since I've been 16 way back in 1987 and as I'm watching this and keeping in mind some of the reviews on this site I've come to one conclusion. RUSH fans are ...! Some fans. These ... elitist audiophile cretins! There's one review on here that gave the DVD 4 stars and didn't have one good thing to say about it! I know as much as anyone about Rush's technical skill, not only as players but as recording artists. To me they always had an amazing balance between great production and raw rock'n'roll energy that makes them the most ironic power trio in rock'n'roll history. To focus on one aspect such as production value is ridiculous. It's the combination that makes them so great. I think the overly slick production style that started with Hold Your Fire to present day hurt them and the great songs that they've written in the last 10+ years. After Roll the Bones I gave up on Rush. There were some good songs here and there but the over produced polished production style on even the good songs made the boys seem soft. The raw energy and power of this DVD brings those songs to life in a way I would've never thought possible and introduced me to great Rush songs I never would've heard before. These reviewers that wine about the lousy mix forget that this is live rock and roll baby and that Rush is a bloody rock'n'roll band of the highest order. It's supposed to be in your face and assault your senses! Did they ever listen to there first live album?! It's total bootleg quality! At the end you can here fans screaming to each other "that was awesome!" Alex,Geddy, & Neil play with utter fury on this DVD. You'd never believe that they were in there 50's. This DVD takes me back to those early days and reminds me why Rush is one of my favorite bands and makes me feel guilty for not listening to them for the last 10+ years. Welcome back boys! Can't wait to see the tour in 2004!

Summary: Great DVD
Review: Don't pay attention to the negative reviews. This is a great sounding DVD and it is worth getting. There was a reviewer comparing this to a Don Henley concert or someone of that nature. Sure, if you want a concert to sound like it was recorded in your living room with a bunch of hacks playing and you want to fall asleep watching it, don't get this one, go get a Bee Gees, Henley, or Yanni DVD or whatever lame DVD is out there. The Rio concert captures the true essence of a large outdoor concert in impossible conditions i.e. rain that shorted out electronic equipment. So don't listen to the audiotech gooberputzes whose virgin ears have never been to a "real" concert and had their ears ring for days. Get it now!

Summary: a darn good look
Review: i understand all the differing opinions on this DVD, because everyone wants something a little different from it. some of us are total audiophiles, some want behind the scenes details, some only want to hear the music, some want the crowd noise, etc. i would recommend that anyone who considers him/herself a rush fan buy this DVD -- not because the sound or camera work is perfect, but because it offers an unrivaled snapshot of our favorite band in concert. andrew mac naughtan's documentary is worth the purchase price all by itself, because this is a look that none of us have ever had at the behind-the-scenes aspects of a modern rush tour. sure, we read tidbits here and there, but this is an hour of "all access". everyone has a right to their critical opinions, but in the BIG PICTURE, why would any rush fan NOT want to own this DVD? buy it -- now.

if i had to add a small disappointment myself, it's the fact that the "anthem" from 1975 is not a true performance, but merely a lip-sync to the "fly by night" recording of it. did anyone else notice this?
