Summary: THIS MOTHER ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: I have been a fan since 1980 and watching this DVD is like tasting a fine aged wine-IT IS AWESOME!!!. Rush plays a great selection of songs from their career and many of the older songs (2112-Closer to the Heart-La Villa Strangiato) take on new life in this DVD. All three members just play awesome but Neil Peart is by far THE best drummer on the planet. His method is amazing. Watching the audience in Rio go nuts is fun to watch and you can tell the band is having a great time watching the kids go nuts. YYZ is crazy--people singing along and all jumping in unison AND THIS IS AN INSTRUMENTAL!!! Get the kids and wife, popcorn, and prepare to be blown away by a 3 hour concert! The 2nd DVD also has some great features. I give this 6 out of 5 stars!!!!!

Summary: Great DVD
Review: I can't understand how any Rush fan, or any fan of "good" rock music would not like this DVD. What a performance from Neil, Alex and Geddy. I would not change a thing, except for maybe fewer cut aways on the video. As far as the sound goes, this is the way Rush sounds live. The instruments dont have the same seperation as the studio versions, but any Rush fan knows that Rush live sounds a bit different than the studio. Also to compare Rush's sound on this DVD to their other live CD's also is futile. Ive seen rush on 5 different tours and they seem to have a different "sound" on each tour. That's part of what makes seeing Rush live so special.

Performance's are top notch from Neil, Alex and Geddy. As usual each song is played note for note, just as they were originally composed. Even Closer to The Heart is played to a T, without the added on reggae that they added on several years ago.

Thank you soooo much Neil, Alex and Geddy for this amazing show. And thank yor Rio for showing the world how much Rush and Rio rock.

Can't wait to see Rush in a few month's on the 30th anniversary tour. Every audience will have something to shoot for now that Rio has shown us how it's done. Who know's, maybe we can squeeze another great DVD out of this tour as well.

Summary: 5 for performance, 1 for editing of visuals...
Review: I've been a long time casual fan of Rush who has never had the opportunity to see them in concert. I noticed this DVD in Best Buy a couple weeks ago and snatched it up figuring it would be the next best thing.

I am *very* pleased with the quality of the group's performance. Geddy Lee's voice has aged very gracefully. It seems he could still hit almost all of the high notes like the old days -- he just couldn't sustain them quite as long as he used to (entirely understandably so.) All three guys definitely have their mojo as far as technique goes. It did seem at times like Geddy was the only one truly *enjoying* himself, but I guess it being the end of the tour might explain that. The playlist is excellent.

As far as sound goes, it's decent on my 2.0 Denon & B&W system. I wonder if some of the 5.1 people were getting killed by their surround levels.

The bad, PAINFUL part is the frenetic, no, spastic nearly nonstop jumping from camera to camera. I wanted to be able to settle down a little to watch the guys *play* -- not see 50 million closeups of the fans on the front row.
Frankly it seems like the director/editor didn't trust Rush's appeal to the fans, thinking they had to substitute constant cuts for the lack of wild and crazy jumping around and/or strutting that some younger hair band might have done 15 years ago. Me? I would be perfectly happy watching 3 extremely talented guys "just" playing their asses off.

By way of comparison, the editing of Metallica's S&M DVD is nearly perfect -- never feels static -- you're aware of everything going on, yet you get to spend lots of quality time with each bandmember. RiR almost gives me a headache to watch.

One other question -- the camera placements for Neil were crappy, hardly ever any sharp closeup views. Did the band as a whole decide they didn't want video guys obstructing the view of the fans? Or just not want to pay the expense of a few more cameras? Neil, in particular seemed to have a zone in which the cameras were not allowed to intrude -- is this his idea of "personal space"? One of the cameras trained on him, from the rear I think (not very helpful) was stationary, perhaps fixed mount with no cameraman, and had crappy video quality.

The DVD is worth getting for the songlist and the band's performance -- perhaps a capstone for latter part of their career -- but the DVD falls down on the visuals. In that regard concert DVD should be *better* than being there in person. Unless of course you were center, front row.
This one bungles that goal.

Summary: Great Concert DVD... BUT
Review: I am a long time Rush fan who discovered the guys with "A Show Of Hands" which many feel sounded too polished. While Rush in Rio the DVD and the accompanying audio CD sound more raw an energetic... the way it sounds and feels at a real Rush concert, my problem with the sound was the LACK OF MIXING FOR THE DRUMS and keyboards. I am aware that Alex Lifeson who was the band member responsible for part of the sound mixing was attempting to push Rush's guitar and bass driven sound, an exploration that Rush has been doing more or less successfully since "Counterparts" However, I feel the guitar and bass completely over shadow the percussion (drums) and keyboards (and sequenced events).

Although given my statement, I also must address that it isn't entirely the mixing of the DVD or CD. As I recall seeing Rush live on the "Vapor Trails" tour the sound tended to be a bit muddy even live, which once again was intentionally done and driven by Rush themselves but in my opinion, they need to lay back off of it a little and let the entire sound spectrum that is and within their music shine through...

To me, I want to hear those little surround sound synthesizer effects in "The Big Money" and other songs (you know what I am talking about), but I also enjoy the more ferocious guitar and bass in the mix. I believe BOTH with equal attention would have produced a better DVD sound wise.

I won't comment on the total lack of TOM TOM or Electric drum miking or mixing on this DVD. You'll understand when you see it... hear it rather.

The DVD is worth the money and the purchase, it's bright it captures a true modern Rush show and the energy that TRUE FANS feel at their concerts. It isn't as produced and polished as "A Show of Hands" and while that is a PLUS it is also a NEGATIVE.

PURCHASE IT BY ALL MEANS, especially if you are just getting into Rush, as I discovered Rush for the first time with a video myself (A Show of Hands). The combination of their Sonics and the visuals are extremely well put together particularly in concert THOUGH never forget to go back to the original albums and hear the songs with all the proper mixing and shine to them.

Thanks for listening, good luck.

Summary: A Show in Rio
Review: I have to admit, this is an entertaining C.D. I especially enjoyed how Fans south of us enjoy Rush. It's also embarrasing when Non-English or limited English speaking fans know the lyrics to Vapor Trails and i can't :O. But I especillay enjoyed how the DVD expressed the excitement of fans and how music can be the one language that transcends music but a voice of reason. I have yet to see a fight in a Rush concert, Heck, when Rush played at the Forum in Inglewood Ca, no one acted stupid. No fights broke out and it was done professionally. One may think that people in Rio were opportunists, taking advantage of crowded areas, as stated in the press when it comes to crime, but everyone behaved and had a great time. I love this educational DVD>.

Summary: The best live Rush ever
Review: This is the best live Rush video or audio ever released. The sound is certainly much better than the CD, and the added advantage is 40,000 rabid, energetic fans who even sing along with the instrumentals. Whether you're a long-time Rush fan or new to their unique blend of melody and energy, this DVD is one of the best live recordings ever.

Summary: A Very Pleasant Surprise, Rockers!
Review: Upon first listen I was stunned. The crowd noise was way too present. It sounded mixed to that affect and I thought, What a horrible mistake. Really. Three songs in I realized I was merely tolerating the movie for the visuals, seeing the guys perform the same tour I watched when they toured Vapor Trails. Disappointed, I stopped it, went away and started it again later. My DVD player defaulted to 2 channel stereo with subwoofer and what a difference! It sounds great! The crowd noise fades away. The sound of the Boys comes up. They are performing at the top of their game presenting past and present gems like they are touring for the first time. Just an incredible DVD for any Rush fan or anyone that claims to be a rocker. It's playing right now. I play it alot. So will you!
