Summary: Excellent - Highly Recommended
Review: Wonderfully done. Sounds is excellent of stereo. Crowd was very excited and the choice to film the DVD in Rio was brilliant.

I have been to well over 40 Rush shows, including 7 from this last tour, and the energy at these RIO shows was electricfying. I wish I could have been there.

If you are a Rush fan, this is more than worth the price. If you are not a fan, may turn you in to one.

Summary: Right on! + Easter Eggs
Review: Stunning and lots of fun. Who knew Alex was such a goofball. Thanks for the tip on the Stereo mix. I probably wouldn't have bothered on my own.

re: Easter Eggs

"The By-Tor cartoon can be accessed by pressing the "Enter" key
on your remote while Alex Lifeson is speaking about it during the
documentary. The Anthem promo can be accessed through the code
"2112", as follows:
2) start O Baterista then immediately go back to the main menu
1) start YYZ then immediately go back to the main menu
1) start YYZ then immediately go back to the main menu
2) start O Baterista then immediately go back to the main menu
you will then see the option for Anthem on the main menu."

enjoy!

Summary: LISTEN IN STEREO, NOT 5.1
Review: For those of you who think the audio sucks, it's because the 5.1 mix is bad, however the stereo mix is perfect. For some reason live shows that are done in 5.1 don't usually sound good. Another example s Ozzy Osbourne: Live at Budokan. At first listen I automatically selected surround and said to myself "great, another bad recording" and as soon as I just put it to stereo, it made all the difference. So before you get bad expectations because of the reviews don't worry I'm sure most of them haven't tried it in just regular stereo, It beats Different stages sound quality by far.

Summary: For those who complain about the sound...
Review: Can't you just watch a DVD and take it for what it is? A great show from a great band. I, for one, am so glad that they chose to do Vapor Trails and another tour. The people who constantly complain about everything are those people who you know, or work with, who complain about everyting...all the time. It's too warm, it's too cold, I need a raise, etc... You know the kind. They are the one's who'd complain about the taxes if they won the lottery.
Just take the stick out, quit complaining, and watch the DVD. Is it that hard?

Summary: A M A Z I N G ! ! !
Review: I've read all sorts of reviews for this AMAZING DVD...

I am a long time Rush fan, A Show of Hands was amazing as well but with VHS I have played it so often that the quality is very poor, but with the DVD of RIR it will stay perfect all the time.

The Sound Quality: I have no idea what people are doing but it sounds incredible, people have to realize that this was recorded live with no sound check beforehand. It is a LIVE show NOT a studio recording Wake up people.

If you choose STEREO in options not 5.1 Surround and not use any surround decoding on your system it will sound amazing!!!
I even read a review about how it wasn't loud enough... What is wrong with these people TURN UP THE ##### VOLUME!

ENJOY!!! This DVD is the best thing Rush as released!
10/10

Summary: Tremendous show with some sound problems
Review: First of all, the problems. Yes, the mid-range sound is weak, particularly on Geddy's vocals. If you have a sub-par sound system, DON'T BUY THIS! Wait until the inevitable remix version comes out and they've fixed that problem. The multi-angle feature really didn't work either. I had no idea there was some kind of "anamorphic" thingie that was supposed to be on it...would you really buy a DVD just for that? Who cares!

Now, for the good stuff. With even a decent sound system, the audio is just fine, and improves throughout the show. The band's performance was very enjoyable, as was the crowd's reaction. Who knew that Latin America would love Rush that much? The drum solo was a highlight as always, and almost all the Rush favorites are there. As with their shows in North America, the band tends to warm up and get really good by the end of the show, and they were blowing away everything by about 1/3 of the way through this one. Rush fans must get this (with the one caveat mentioned above), guitar and drum musicians will enjoy it, and just rock music fans ought to purchase it in order to see how rock music can sound when you have a band who's serious about music. I hope the band will continue on for several more years, and here's hoping that the rock and roll hall of fame will pull its collective head out of its collective hindquarters and put this band in the hall of fame where they belong!

Summary: Less Than Expected
Review: The concert itself was great - essentially the same thing I saw here in the US a few months earlier - and worth the price of the DVD.

However, I was disappointed with the audio mix - it sounded too compressed making Lifeson's guitar work difficult to pick up in some songs and Peart's drums sound muffled. There was too much emphasis for my tastes on the bass tracks - drums, guitar, and keyboard pedal. And, there was way too much emphasis on crowd noise to the point where it was difficult to clearly distinguish the music in many songs.

The video camera angles skipped around too frequently throughout the concert. And, again, way too much footage of the teenagers in the front row doing singalongs and playing air guitar.

I was hoping for something along the quality lines of "The Who and Friends - Live At Albert Hall" DVD put out a couple years ago. Or maybe, something along the lines of their recent concert here in Atlanta with focus on the band, not the crowd.

Summary: A grand finale to a grand tour
Review: Even if you're not a Rush fan, this is worth watching once. (If you're a fan, you'll watch it ten times.) Start with the hour-long documentary on the second disc. You'll get a good introduction to the band. Alex is silly and emotional, Geddy is a sort of behind-the-scenes bandleader, and Neil is the secret weapon --- he doesn't show up much on screen, but when he does he has something memorable to say. You'll get a sense of where the band is in their career: at the finish line, no longer trying to prove themselves. At this point, they simply give in to the demands of the audience they've built up over 30 years.

Then you get the concert, the big finish on a big tour. The band plays over 25 songs, from their first album to the latest. The show itself is stripped down, considering the size of the crowd and the arena. They have a backdrop for images and camera close-ups of the band, and (believe it or not) a row of washing machines with little toys sitting on top. The focus is on the songs, not the props or the stage. (Think of it as the opposite of ZooTV.)

The performance is typical for Rush: professional, fun, and a little bit too rehearsed. You can tell they've been playing these songs for months. They never skip a beat or blow a lyric, which is nice, but there's never a "Guns and Roses Moment" when you think a guy in the band is going to have a breakdown or collapse. That sucks a little of the danger out of the concert, but few Rush fans are looking for that.

Typically with a live Rush album, there's a problem with the song list --- too many songs Rush fans have already heard, live and in the studio. But on DVD, it's all new. This is the first time I've seen the band play 'Closer to the Heart' on my TV screen, so I don't mind that I've already heard the live version of the song a hundred times before.

For Rush fans, this is a historic DVD. You have to own it. But it could also bring in a lot of new fans, showcasing the songs and the live show all at once.

Summary: an oustanding value
Review: my hope is that my comments will help people who are interested in this DVD determine whether or not it is worth buying

my answer is an immediate and emphatic YES!

regardless of whether or not you are a Rush fan, there is something to be said for straightforward, down to earth, flat out inspired musicianship. and if you take a second to read the liner notes that Neil Peart put together for the Rush in Rio DVD, you should no doubt immediately recognize that this was NOT your average live concert shoot. so many things had to happen in order for this to even HAPPEN. As a fan, all I can do is sit back and appreciate it. Not unlike the 4 concerts I saw on the Vapor Trails tour alone (let alone the 26 times I have seen them overall) - this show is nothing less than 3 guys pouring their hearts out and doing what they love to do - play with all they've got.

A review won't win fans over, and it shouldnt. A fan is born out of admiration and respect for the artists that drive them, inspire them, and bring them joy. For me, Rush is that band.

I have never witnessed Rush perform a more inspired, and spot-on performance. Sure, the video COULD be anamorphic, in HD to make my widescreen scream....and the mix could be better...if it were tinkered with and overdubbed, sanitized, homogenized and partially hydrogenized...but let's face it...this is a true, live performance in front of a throng of 60,000 screaming fans on a hot steamy night in Rio de Janiero during a brief respite from a tropical storm.... its a wonder it happened at all. I am thankful for it and it is worth every penny to me.

I have spent the last 5 days listening to the DVD and CD over and over and i still get chills every time.

These guys are about as down to earth, talented, and inspired as any group of musicians I have ever seen. Thanks Rush -

a lifelong fan
