Summary: Wow! What a Show!
Review: I've been a Rush fan for many years. I have all of their concert CD's but have never seen them live or any of their previous concert videos ("A Show of Hands"). So when they came out with "Rush in Rio" both in CD and DVD format, I was debating on which one I wanted. I made it easy on myself and got both!

I've already reviewed the CD set and found it to be terrific, primarily due to the fact that the audience was so enthusiastic and knew the words to every song and sung along. Well, the DVD experience of actually watching the fans in action is even more breathtaking. I can just imagine the "rush" that Rush got when they saw 40,000 young Brazilians (most who probably were not even born when many of the songs that the band played were recorded) moved their arms in unison to the music and sang with their hearts.

It was late at night when I popped the concert in the DVD player and my intention (once I saw the concert was almost 3 hours long) was to watch half of it then watch the other half on another day. Well, needless to say, I was up way past my bedtime watching the whole thing. The video was crystal clear, the sound was great, the audience was pumped and the band was enthusiastic. It's probably the best concert video I've ever seen.

Why people rip this for its sound is anybody's guess. It sounds great, maybe even better than the CD set of the same concert. I haven't checked out the extras on the second disc yet, but am looking forward to doing so!

Summary: Can you say Disappointment???
Review: First off I have to start off by saying that I am a big Rush fan. I was really excited when I found out that they were releasing their first live concert DVD. However when I sat down to watch it, I was marjorly dissipointed.

First off, like many other people have said, the audio clearly sucks, even in surround sound with the bass and treble tweaked. The mixing job is really quite terrible. The crowd noise drowns out the band and in most parts of the concert, Geddy's vocals are nearly inaudible. The reason I bought this DVD was to hear a more intimate performance, not make it seem like I was hearing it from the cheap seats.

Second, the camera work and editing were simply awful. I dont know how the director even got hired to do this. It is so frustrating to watch because the cameras cut every 1-3 seconds. This would be just fine if you wanted to induce a siezure, but otherwise it is just distracting and irritating. More importantly, the cameres were not correctly choreographed to the songs, so they were never in the right place at the right time. The cameras always cut away at inopportune times like when Alex, Niel and Geddy were going into a solo.

Quite frankly, the only reason why you should consider buying this DVD is to see Niel Peart do an awesome drum solo or maybe to see the documentary. The only reason I gave this 2 stars is just because Rush are musical geniouses.

Summary: All The Rush I Can Get
Review: I am still giving this 5 stars even though some of the audio is a tad on the muddy side, but as an Australian who has never had he pleasure of seeing Rush here, or hearing them on radio at all for that matter, this is a must.

This brings back the memories of Canada and the times I saw them in Montreal on the 1990 "Presto" tour and the 1994 "Counterparts" tour. They are simply great live, putting on a diverse and nearly 3 hour performance, so you get your monies worth on this DVD.

The bonus material on disc 2 is also very interesting, and gives those who do not have access to North American music media, an insight into the band.

Summary: SOUND ADJUSTMENT
Review: I think I have read a thousand reviews of the DVD. I know nothing of the Surround Sound and widescreen complaints that I have read. I do, though, have a relatively nice stereo that puts out a nice sound...so I guess I am only talking to you guys (and gals). I did experience sound problems when I first listened and watched Rush In Rio. Then a few days later I came to my senses and totally did the unthinkable...I totally took out all the base and turned up all the treble in the "mix", and by gosh, I heard an entirely different concert on my system. It was so clear and crisp. I got to thinking that maybe Alex mixed it this way on purpose to weed out any non-true Rush fans, but I may go to far. With the base taken totally out of the mix, I hear Geddy just fine, the way I would on any other recording, and I hear Alex even better. But I still had to prove it to myself. Another guy who loved it said that it was the best performance he had ever seen of Red Sector A. "What?", I said to myself, thinking back the last time I listened to that version on the DVD. At the time I thought it to be the worst; but then I tried my new setup and I tended to now agree, it was amazing, at least on my system. The clincher was when I was listening to Ghost Rider. At the end of that song, Neil breaks a stick, and to my amazement, this time I actuallyhear the stick crack as he broke it on purpose. That was enough proof for me. Sorry if this doesn't work on your system but I thought I might put my two cents in the pot to help any suffering fan.

Summary: There's nothing compared with this!!!!it's simply Rush
Review: This DVD really kicks ass!!! I think that the sound is excellent and the syncronization with the audio track it's very well done. I plugged my dvd player to my home stereo and the sound was perfect. I only thing I didn't liked is that there a few songs that are missing in this DVD or in this tour like, ghost of a chance, animate, test for echo, subdivisions and vital signs.
I really like this dvd and i hope rush fans will love this item.

Summary: Must be for the MTV generation???
Review: What were the cameramen thinking when they filned and edited this? I've only made it through the first three songs and I'm exhausted from trying to catch up with the infinite editing switches. I timed them, and each frame stays on at the most three seconds!! When you're hoping to watch alex up close and play you get instead views of the concertgoers from back in the stadium. It will be a while before I go back and give this another try...maybe after a good nights sleep when my eyes and brain are rested up. MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT

Summary: Terrible Audio
Review: It amaze me how many fans gave this DVD a 5 star. I have almost more than 35 music DVDs and by far this one is at the bottom of my list due to the audio quality. I try to be very objective and critical when I purchase any DVD, and I want my money's worth. It is a awesome performace, but Rush and the fans got rob by the sound mix. I'm a fan of Rush, but certainly not a fanatic... I leave that to David Koresh.

Summary: Awesome DVD
Review: I just got this in yesterday and have not seen the whole concert all the way through, but from what I have seen so far, it is great. This is the best concert release I have seen of Rush, granted I have not seen them all. The second disc with the multiviews of YYZ, LaVilla, and Neil's drum solo are awesome. I really liked the documentary, it showed the guys behind the scenes and had some rare interviews. Great stuff for long time fans. I think the sound was fine and really liked the risk they took to film this. Wait until the last show of the tour and then hit it with no sound check. Just like the old days, I'm sure.

Summary: A great performance
Review: Please don't let the sound discussions distract you from getting this great release. It is a great concert experience, almost like being there. The fans in Rio are so amazing!! Rush's performance is just awe-inspiring.In spite of the problems of the equipment arriving 7 hrs late and that they were not able to do a sound check, the show must go on and it did. The set list is excellent. I especially like the encore but the whole concert is outstanding!
The documentary is neat and the easter eggs are fun. So I will close with this statement GET IT NOW, you will not regret it. Enjoy and thank you Jesus for RUSH!!
