Summary: The key word here is ENERGY
Review: Frank definitely looks and sounds as if he has been doing alot of boozing and staying out late on this performance. What he lacks in vocal power in this performance, he makes up for in charisma and confidence. He cuts notes short, knowing his limitations. The highlight for me was his performance of Angel Eyes. His voice was perfect for the message in this song. As always Frank was classy and professional. I would recommend this more for the attitude and swagger that was Frank, than for his vocal capabilities during this particular performance.

Summary: Not as bad as some claim . . .
Review: I really don't understand why this show gets such a bad rep. He sings pretty flawlessly, in my opinion. It isn't vintage Sinatra, but I have more of a problem with his set-list than his voice. Songs like "Autumn In New York" and "Angel Eyes" are bad songs in general. While he strikes home runs with "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" and "You Are The Sunshine of my Life."

The rest of his set-list is pretty good, featuring "The Lady Is A Tramp," "I Got You Under My Skin, and even a new jazz version of "My Kind of Town" that gets Sinatra really pumped up. Some of the songs were done slower and in a lower key, but Frank Sinatra still set the Garden on fire.

Still, in spite of it being a solid show, it does have some problems. The ABC-Tv crew were too busy focusing on the audience and the "stars" in the audience than on Sinatra. Another problem was that something just didn't 'click' with this show. Sinatra seemed too "somber" and seemed, in the early part of the show, that he had to "force himself" to be Frank Sinatra with the gestures and the sly remarks. Maybe the big arena jilted him, but I doubt it. In "Royal Festival Hall," Sinatra really floated through his set-list and felt like the usual 'smart-ass" that Frank Sinatra was. In "The Main Event," he sang great, but something just came off flat.

My biggest complaint was his post-1971 versions of "My Way." Especially this one. It fails in comparison to the "My Way" album or the "Sinatra" and "Royal Festival Hall" Tv-specials. Sinatra had a "cocky, don't give a crap" attitude about the subtext of the song, that vanished here. Here he is once again very somber and sings the song with much remorse. He also sings it very slowly. He also is very bloated here, and it makes him look 65 years old, instead of the 59 he was at the time.

If you are new to Sinatra, then check out either "Sinatra" or "Royal Festival Hall" before this one. If you want a good post-1971 Frank Sinatra Tv-special, then I would try "Sinatra In Japan" from 1985. It is a Region 2-6 only DVD, but they can be bought on the United Kingdom department of Amazon and played with a region-free recorder. Either that or write Warner Reprise and tell them, that the United States would like "Sinatra In Japan" too.

However, if you are a big Sinatra fan, then pick this up. It isn't as bad as they say.

Summary: Don't expect Picture and sound quality
Review: If you just want to hear and see Frank Sinatra in concert, then go with it. If you care further for Picture and sound quality as we expect in a DVD format, it is more like watching it on a VHS original format.

Summary: He wasn't ready
Review: The raves over this concert prove that if you have a loyal following, you can lead the deaf and blind.

One of the biggest concerts of his career, and the man didn't prepare.

Go back and review the 1969 special and come back to this one.

In five years time, he aged 15 years, his voice has tragically failed.

He showed up here bloated, barely able to move, busting out of his clothes, throat full of mucus. god knows what he ate before this show. His mind was more on the off-the-record remarks he made during the station breaks about the Austrailans and the press.

Challenging passages he would normally glide through became croaks.

From one of his life-long fans, this simply will not do. Should have prepared better. You can fool some of the people some of the time,.........

Lesson: god given talent not a given forever if one does not look after oneself
