Summary: Great disc, some reviewers don't understand how it was made
Review: As this is only the second in the View From the Vault series, it is understandable that some of the other reviewers don't seem to understand the origins of this concert video.

All of the View From The Vault series were filmed at shows in the late 80's and early 90's when the Dead were playing large stadiums and needed video screens at the shows for fans seated far from the stage to view the players.

Thus, all of those shows with the large video screens have been fortunately recorded for posterity, although they were initially intended only as a much-needed aid for concert goers in large venues. Accordingly, these dvd's were not created with the home viewer in mind, but rather the concert goer who is enveloped in the rest of the trappings of the live show. These video screen projections supplied a view of the members playing for all in the back to see. They were not filmed with the intention of releasing them as a complete picture of the concert experience.

With that in mind, this show is fantastic. One of the highlights of the summer 91 run. If you listen and watch the DVD imagining that you are at the show and the images you see are simply the images that are normally projected on the large video screens above the audience, then you will love this disc.

Do not expect a professionally produced, made for resale to the DVD viewing audience, concert experience.

We are very fortunate to have these shows preserved both on audio and video formats. Any live music lover should appreciate the View From The Vault series for what it is, a portrait, be it a moving one, of the band in action.

Summary: COME ON AND LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL
Review: Enjoyed this DVD immensely. Many of the songs come from the Blues Of Allah album. Bruce Hornsby is awesome on the keyboards(Brent Midland died a year earlier). RFK Stadium is an absolute shrine. The lighting and sound are awesome. Favorite songs included Jimmy Row and Tennessee Jed. Also Foolish Heart is a jam. My only regret is the lack of behind the scenes footage but what can you expect from the dead. If you looking for backstage interviews and riff-raff between band members I suggest you look elsewhere. The only better DVD from the Dead is Downhill From Here (Alpine Valley-1989).

Summary: A Must for Music Fans
Review: Excellent show captured on video. This video stands out..what can I say - not only an awesome rendition but you can tell the guys are having fun performing them. You almost get that feeling of being there and in on the fun...it enhances the Dead's psychedelic appeal...I think this ones better than the first "View From the Vault."...

Summary: A venue of memories & a visible lyrics option
Review: Grateful Dead: View From The Vault II takes full advantage of its DVD format to provide the viewer with a memorable experience that includes more than ninety minutes of live Grateful Dead concert footage taken from their RFK Stadium performance in Washington, DC, on June 14, 1991. The DVD allows the inclusion of three bonus songs, a venue of memories, a visible lyrics option, a band biography, and a special "Liberty" video. Grateful Dead: View From The Vault II is an impressive, highly recommended addition to the DVD collection of Grateful Dead fans everywhere.

Summary: This Will Be On All Available Dead Videos
Review: I guess there are 2 types of fans of the Grateful Dead: Deadheads (really diehard types that would enjoy the video even if the quality was at a half a star, and the Dead were having an off night). Then there are non-Deadheads (casual fans that want the best concerts available of that group). I have all available Dead videos (didn't get GD movie - waited a little too long), and love them all (guess which type of fan I am). To the non-Deadhead fans, I would say get The Closing of Winterland, Downhill from Here, and (maybe because of Bruce Hornsby) View from the Vault 2. Then continue your quest for the perfect concert video (my personal choice is a toss up between The Last Waltz, and Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense).
Now. For the Deadicated, Deadhead fans, I would recommend anything & everything available (including Grateful Dawg). Forget the reviews from some of the others about the cheesie psychadelic effects, forget the comments of "this concert wasn't as good as", and forget the "it was better live becase they edited" comments. When it comes to Garcia and The Grateful Dead (in the illustrious words of Robert Hunter)"Like a Steam Locomotive Rolling Down the Track. He's Gone, He's Gone and Nothings Gonna Bring Him Back" so enjoy what's out there. Kudos to Monterey Home Video for making these concerts available.

Summary: Out of sync
Review: I second the comment of the reviewer that said that the video and sound are out of sync. I've loved this show on tape/CD for many years, and was looking forward to seeing the DVD, but watching the misaligned version of Stella Blue was very disappointing. I have stuck the DVD on the shelf, and am going back to my CDs.

Summary: The special effects ruin this DVD
Review: IT TOOK GARCIA ALL OF 5 SECONDS TO FUMBLE THE LYRICS TO THE SHOWS OPENER COLD RAIN AND SNOW . I WONDER IF THE SHOW WOULD HAVE SOUNDED BETTER WITH VINCE WELNICK MUTED .WEIR'S GUITAR WAS ACTUALLY TURNED ON A FEW TIMES A RARE TREAT FOR THE 90S.THE FIRST SET WASN'T NEARLY AS GOOD AS THE 2ND SET WHICH WAS BRILLANT WITH THE ONE COMPLAINT THAT DARK STAR WAS NOT EVEN HALF AS LONG AS THE PREVIOUS YEAR AT RFK WHICH IS INCLUDED AS A DVD FILLER.ANOTHER COMPLAINT MIGHT BE MICKEY HARTS INABILTY TO GET THE BEAM(POSSIBLY THE MOST POWERFUL INSTRUMENT IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM (WHEN?) WORKING PROPERLY IN THE DRUMS PORTION OF THE SHOW.
LIKE MANY AVID DEAD FANS I COULD CRITIQUE A SHOW FOR 10,000 WORDS
BUT IN SUMMARY LETS JUST SAY DESPITE THE FACT THAT MANY SHOWS :TAKE 7-12-90 RFK(THE FILLER) AS AN EXAMPLE WOULD HAVE BEEN A BETTER RELEASE WITH SAY STELLA WHO>LOVELIGHT BABY BLUE PHIL:HER OH YES! IN SUMMARY THIS IS THE SINGLE BEST DVD ON THE MARKET.IF I HAD ONE DVD TO TAKE TO A DESSERT ISLAND THIS WOULD BE IT.
