Summary: Some flaws, but still fascinating
Review: Absolutely necessary for anyone who loves Can as I do. Over 4 hours of video footage plus an audio CD of fantastic, sometimes incredible solo work from each of the 4 founding members of Can.

I have a few minor gripes. The period from 1968-1974, during which Can did their most influential and impressive work, is not represented enough in the documentary. Perhaps video footage from this era simply doesn't exist, but I would have loved to have seen more about the making of such masterpieces as "Tago Mago" and "Ege Bamyasi". Aside from a live performance of "Paperhouse" from 1971, and a band interview in a stairwell somewhere in Germany, we don't see much from this period. On the other hand, the "free concert" from 1972 (on disc 1) is mind-blowing and *almost* makes up for the lack of footage noted above. Almost.

Also, I wish there were subtitles for the Echo Awards ceremony, as there are in other parts of the DVD's. I actually do speak a bit of German (a VERY little bit in fact), but I can't make out most of what Holger, Jaki, and Irmin say during their acceptance speech. Holger in particular says something (apparently) very touching about Michael Karoli (RIP), but I can't decipher it.

But enough griping about what's missing. What IS here is wonderful, and this generous collection is an essential purchase for any Can fan.

Summary: A Great Tribute
Review: This 3-disc set is a fantastic overview of a great progressive German band. It contains 2 feature-length films (a documentary and a portrait), a 52 minute live concert, numerous biographies and an historical essay. Plus a short film by Brian Eno. The third disc is comprised of recent material by the band members (albeit individually). I love Can and I love this DVD! If you don't, you probably won't.

Summary: Reccomended!
Review: WOW - there aren't many bands who deserve a DVD this good, let alone ones that actually *get* one! Basically, we get it all here - TV performances, live show footage, studio sessions, a documentary, new and vintage interviews, new and remixed music from the various members, plus loads more. Oh, and while the CD doesn't contain any group performances, I really enjoyed the music!

As someone who hesitated buying, I suggest you don't make the same mistake. If you like CAN at all, this won't let you down.
