Summary: Pure Magic! Now, this is a true legend!
Review: I just watched this DVD and I was...speechless. It is awesome! The prior reviewer said that Mathis'"pipes are not as smooth as they were in 1958" With all due respect..Mathis has been singing for over forty years! If the vocal chords of a sixty two year old man are not as strong as they were over forty years ago, I think we can live with that. I dare anyone to name any other singer from Mathis' generation who still looks and sings as great as Mathis. Johnny Mathis is a true American Legend. Time has barely diminished his voice and looks. His talent and his passion are as great as ever if not greater.

Summary: FROM-1956-2002--WOW!
Review: I, consider myself blessed to view this great presentation by Johnny in this"Tony Bennett format ".This is tailor made for Johnny Mathis. The interactive format allows us to seee Johnny as we would never see him even in his live performances. Usually he appears shy and withdrawn. In this DVD and in the audio interview that follows you actually get to know meet and love the person 'JOHNNY". Sure you hear and see what a gifted person he is and how handsome he looks and WHAT A TOTALLY COMMITTED PERSON CAN DO WITH A GREAT TALENT. What to me is even more incredible is that inspite of those gifts what a wonderful [down to earth] and nice guy he is. This comes through again and again. Do I,recommend this DVD, yes to every lover of music and to every father and mother because raising a son like him would make every parents dream come true.To boot you get 90 minutes of a performance from a man who has been committed to his craft for 46 years and has loved every minute of it.

Summary: Strictly for Mathis fans
Review: If you're a Johnny Mathis fan, you'll like it. He can still sing a good melody. At the age of 60 his pipes are not as smooth as they were in 1958. He doesn't glide up to those high notes as good as he used to, but Johnny will still bring you memories of that back seat in the old Chevy. I just hope that they put his Christmas video on DVD.

Summary: The impressively untouched Mathis formula shows on video
Review: It is impressive to witness Mathis technique and style remains ellegant and fresh after so many years. Here you'll find live renditions of all-time Mathis' greatest hits besides some great performances he has recorded but rarely sings in his shows. Some listeners are very critic of Johnny Mathis exageratedly sweetened and romantic approach to songs and of his excessive vibrato and high top notes next to soprano voices. OK, OK ... but no listener can deny Mathis leaves a legacy of stylish to the art of singing GAS. Live by Request is a live presentation of an artist as requested by on-line phone call audience and this show formula seems rather false because orchestra and performer always show perfectly engaged to promptly perform every song asked. Referring to Mathis shows on video, I think it is time for Mathis to create new programs than that obvious and repetitive greatest hit collection. "Chances are" is another video collection on the same repertoire basis.

Review: Johnny is always great; no matter what the venue. Try it, you'll like it. Mark McEwen and Johnny get along just great too.

Summary: Wonderful Wonderful
Review: Once again Johnny Mathis has met the ultimate challenge and triumphed. This video captures his unique style; namely his ability to make every song his very own.
His incredible phrasing, breath control and vocal range were all there. I particularly liked his interaction with the TV viewers and live audience. All I can say is - There are good singers, there are great singers and then there is JOHNNY MATHIS.

Summary: Johnny looks look, mostly sounds good, good song selection
Review: Overall this is a very enjoyable dvd. The sound quality is good, though I would have appreciated a dts 5.1 audio track. Most of the performances are very good, but there are a few notes that Johnny misses BIG TIME (such as at the very beginning of "Chances Are"). But when he hits the notes, which is most of the time, his voice is still as smooth as it was 40 years ago. (Many singers seem to get somewhat scratchy sounding as they age; this doesn't appear to have happened to Johnny yet at all.) The duet with Deniece Williams on "Too Much Too Little Too Late" is fabulous.

I would recommend this to any Johnny Mathis fan or fans of this style of pop vocal music.
