Summary: Recorded live ? maybe...but the sound is Playback...
Review: As one of the other reviewers wrote ("Sonically fantastic, March 22, 2002") and I back him up:
The whole music score in this dvd is PLAYBACK. The sound is exactly THE SAME as in the Audio CD; if you watch carefully you may see that both singers doesnt really sing...and the backgrund choir...well, some of them are standing still, moving there hands a bit - they don't sing.
If this was the original recording than you should hear the clapping from the croud also in the Audio CD; You don't.
If we put aside all the above - the sound is great. that's it. watching the two singers, choir and orchestra does'nt really do too much good...

Summary: only a little bit good...
Review: because of the movement 2 and the encore (chariots of fire). The ladies singing sounded creepy and almost the entire thing was boring, i was only able to watch up until movement 4 (out of 10 movements), and the encore. The encore however almost makes it worth buying, the piece is so awesome to listen to, and you can finally see it performed.

Summary: Sorry, but I was bored to tears with this one.
Review: I am a big Vangelis fan and I must say I was very disappointed with this DVD. Yes, of course, technically, this was a visually fascinating show and the production values were top notch. But, the music bored me to tears. I listen to Vangelis for powerful synth chords and melodies and raw energy which no other recording artist has emulated. What I got with this production was a simplistic psuedo-opera, chorus plus orchestra playing rather monotonous arrangements. The best part was the Chariots of Fire encore, but it left me hungry for so much more. The worst parts were the press conference segment in the "making of" bonus material, and the astrophysicist introducing the main program. I've worked with real life astrophysicists first hand and I know they could have picked someone more dynamic to speak with better lighting, lens focus, and a more professional looking camera shot. Vangelis is a marvelous musician, composer, and recording artist, who has obviously changed course in his musical tastes. If you're a fan of his early albums like "Heaven and Hell", and his later albums like "Direct", "1492", "Oceanic", "Voices", you will be very disappointed. If you liked "El Greco" (which I recognize now as his turning point, but still felt was brilliant), you will probably enjoy this DVD, as there are common melodies to both. I think I'm going to sell my copy used, it's that disappointing. Two stars - one for the production values, the second for the Chariots of Fire live track. That's it.

Review: I'm the 45 years old VANGELIS fan, since 1975.
Until today, I wait his Offical Video or DVD. I see him before on Demis Roussos DVD ( Vangelis fans are MUST BUY ).
Many Vangelis live performances are wonderful ( we know ). This is the First and excellent "DVD live" from great show of Mythodea.
A new Vangelis music, wonderful performance and great show.
Every person,( who play and sing )are very emotional and concantrated ( some parts, sopranos are crying ! ). What a great music.
End of the show, Vangelis makes a surprise and play extra track ... ( which one ? .... buy and see ... ! )
Dear my old friend "EVANGELOS PAPATHANASSIOU" , you are the best composer of 20'th-21'th century.

Summary: Great music, but a disappointing DVD debut
Review: I'm thrilled to finally see and hear Vangelis on DVD, but this really could have been better. The music and the quality of the concert is amazing, and for this reason alone, the DVD is worth purchasing, but the peripheral apects of the DVD itself are lacking in my opinion. The music of Mythodea continues in the vein of Vangelis' tribute to El Greco in the sense that it sounds more like Classical music. But while I felt that the El Greco album told an epic story on a very intimate level, Mythodea tells an epic story in Mythic proportions. The music didn't at first resonate with me as well as El Greco, but it is growing on me. To hear Vangelis' music performed by a real orchestra and two world-famous sopranos is a real treat and to see this mysterious press-shy genius work his artistry on stage is something I've been dreaming of for a long, long time. That said, I have some issues with the production quality of the DVD. Yes, this DVD is mixed in Dobly Digial 5.1 surround. But it sounds like stereo! Vangelis' music, especially his synthesizer works, would be perfect for surround sound, and I really hope to see some of his earlier works remixed for DTS or DVD Audio some day, but this one doesn't fit that bill. Still, if I want to listen to Mythodea, I pop in the DVD because the sound quality is better than the CD. It's a very nice mix if you're not expecting to be surrounded by the music. My biggest complaint is with the extra content. From the out of place introduction by the Nasa guy, whoever he is, to the making of, etc, the production quality of this stuff looks like a glorified home-made video. I really expected more from Sony. On a positive note, the production quality of the concert is top-notch. The picture, presented in letter-box is beautiful. I would rate the music and concert at 4 and a half stars. Overall though,I give this DVD 3 stars because sadly it's just average.

Review: I've had the DVD for a while and finally got the CD. It's thrilling and exciting. It shakes me to the core. It's beautiful.
Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle here take you to the beyond. Are there words to use to describe what these two singers do during the performance ?
I happened to see Audrey Hepburn's DVD "Gardens of the World with Audrey Hepburn" before seeing the MYTHODEA DVD for the first time. I would recommend viewing it before watching this otherworldly production with its exalted, supernatural background projections. This live concert music happens like a garden happens around you, even though it's been captured for viewing on DVD. The images become the actual things they represent, not just symbols.
If you are receptive and listen and watch attentively, you can experience what people mean when they use the words "god" or the "presence of god" -- the planets, space, the inhabitants of Oympus included.
I know I will listen to this time and time again and benefit every time. Before this DVD, we have only approximated "classic Greek". This really does it, this time ! A frontier crossed for the first time in history, too. Way out.

Review: In truth, this DVD was not what I was expecting. What I thought I was going to get was something along the lines of the popular (and very well done) STARGAZE DVD (ASIN: B00004VWUF - available @ Amazon.com). I expected various views of the Martian landscape (courtesy of the recent Mars probes) with the music of Vangelis in the background. What I received in the mail was hardly that. In truth, besides a brief speech @ the beginning by an astrophysicist, this video has precious little to do with the NASA Mars mission. Except for a brief view of what looks to be a computerized animation of the Valus Marinarus in movement 6, one would never guess that this production had anything whatsoever to do with Mars. That said, I'm am not implying that this is a bad DVD - it's just not what I surmised it would be. What it IS is a concert given in Greece with a full orchestra, the noteworthy opera singers Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle, harpists, a full choir and none other than Vangelis himself in the middle of it all. All the while, there is spectacular imagery of ancient Greek and celestial motifs that are sure to dazzle the viewer. The music, while innovative, is not among Vangelis' best works (in my opinion). Aside from the 1st and 3rd movements, the concert is bereft of the vivid, memorable themes for which V is so famous for. Of course, the visual effects certainly enhance the value of the music; I may or may not purchase the CD. As a bonus, there is a full-orchestra rendition of V's popular theme to CHARIOTS OF FIRE at the conclusion of the concert. All in all, this is worth purchasing for all who enjoy audio / visual spectacles once in awhile. I've always had the greatest amount of respect for V, and since he rarely performs in public, a chance to see him in concert is enough to offset the price of the DVD all by itself. For Mars (or perhaps more fittingly, the innate human desire to explore the universe)...For Greece....For Vangelis - if any of these topics interest you, this production is a can't-miss.

Review: Normally, I am not a fan of new age music, but I thoroughly enjoyed this performance. Who could ask for better singers...Kathleen Battle and Jessye Norman. Vangelis is a notable composer and I believe this work will stand the test of time. Five-stars!
