Summary: Great but what about Vol.2?
Review: Fantastic program with outstanding performances that can put to shame any of the younger acts we see on TV daily...
Now they can see what true talent and great singing is about...
Thanks PBS for putting together such a great show with a great orchestra too...
Now I saw that program when it was aired and it was longer (including performances by Chic, The Trammps and many more), and the title of this DVD says Vol.1... so there's gotta be a Vol.2 in the pipe... Please don't make us wait too long!!!
I'm already in line with my credit card...

Summary: Thank God for PBS.
Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this DVD as it features soul artist from the '70s doing their most popular tunes of that era. Most of them are what I would characterize as old and not middle age. However, some of the back ground singers are young. I felt Aretha's performance was good, but she is a little over-rated, and I don't understand her being classified as the "Queen of Soul" as there are other female singers from that era more talented. I wished that the Three Degrees were allowed to do more than one number as their voices had a strong, youthful sound while the rest of the entertainers had voices that were only about 85% of what they were when they were younger. The group Peaches and Herb were good too, and I think Peaches was new as she appeared obviously young, but sounded like the old original Peaches. Barbara Mason was also good as her sound was smooth, accurate and maybe 95% as good as her youth. Blue Magic was surprisingly good sounding and had some great entertaining moves. It was also good to see Jerry Blavatt from Philly as well as Cousin Brucey from WABC in New York who I use to stay up all night on weekends to listen to on our AM radio. You could pick up the New York signal (WABC) at night in eastern North Carolina. The musicians here appeared to be some of the best in the country which is 60% of the reason this DVD is so great. They have strings, horns, guitars, drums and just about every musical intrument available to make these performacnces sound convincing. More surpisely is the flow of the music. It flows like it was put together by some really hot DJays from the past. The flow is excellant. While it contains both 5.1 and 2 channel PCM, the Dolby Digital 5.1 is terrible while the 2 channel PCM sounds like a well recorded CD or album. Its overall a great production. After seeing it, all I could think of is thank God for PBS as it has preserved some nostalgic musical moments before many of these artist clock out. As far as I can tell, only Edwin Starr has clocked out since this effort was produced in November 2002, but he left a pretty good performance on this disc to cherish.

Summary: Very Pleased
Review: This was an excellent, excellent performance. I totally enjoyed it from the beginning to the end. All of the performers were excellent. If I could change anything on this concert, I would allow Blue Magic and The Manhattans as well as the other performers to sing more of their hits. I am very excited about this concert and can't wait to have friends in so they can enjoy it with me. This concert was very well done. Thank you.
