Summary: the greatest DVD ever made
Review: This is an amazing DVD of all of DuranDuran's hits and it has the uncensored version of "Girls on Film" which has lots of nudity. I love DuranDuran more than you can ever imagine. To insult them is like insulting my parents. Just add this bad boy to your cart and enjoy!

Summary: Greatest
Review: If you're like me before I bought this, you haven't seen the videos but perhaps you are interested in this DVD because you like the music. So I'll start off by saying that the videos are very good and actually helped me appreciate the songs I didn't much care for before. I understand why MTV made Duran Duran big. The videos are stylish, sometimes even quite intriguing. I was thinking about how two of the band members have the same names as two of the characters from Lord of the Flies (I think. I know Simon is a name in there. Roger too?) and that's when I began to think that The Wild Boys video was a little reminiscent of that book. It was interesting even if it wasn't intentional (who knows?) The only problem with the DVD is that the extras that are supposed to be hidden on the two discs I couldn't find. Well, I got some help from reviews on here and went to duranduran.com under fan forums and was able to find them. They're pretty good. The DVDrom extras were good too. The interview with Nick and Simon is audio. I misread that. But that's ok. The galleries are helpful and contain much of the easter eggs. The Main menu is a little confusing at first (it just says "Greatest" and you have to click on the separate letters to get to the video menus). I also didn't like Girls on Film because it was crude. I never liked the song anyway. Overall though very good. If you love Duran Duran you'll probably want this but of course there's never any guarantee. The videos alone are worth it, I think. You also get the Violence of Summer video (it's one of the hidden extras) mixed in with a featurette on the Liberty album.
If you hate Duran Duran then I don't know why you bother coming here. I don't post comments on bands I hate because that's not helpful. Most people who are thinking of buying this probably (I hope) know who Duran Duran is and like their music. So there's my little words of wisdom.

Summary: The Kings Of Music Video
Review: This is long overdue for Duran. The only negative thing I can say is that all of their videos should have been on this collection. But,it is still a very good compilation.Duran has always been the front runners when you talk about the 80's and this DVD proves it.

Summary: It's the History that Really Matters - D2 invents VIDEO!
Review: This DVD is a compilation of the "GREATEST" hits of Duran Duran, and should not be seen as extensive or exhaustive. And yes, Duran Duran is not as popular as they were but we have to give them the props they deserve.

These guys INVENTED using music videos to sell their music. They were MTV pioneers. They admitted even back in their glory days they were aspiring to a Roxy Music-like sound, and any arguments that they were ripping them off are moot. This format is the BEST way to appreciate what made them special and unique. The videos were their GREATEST!

Quality issues? These short films were largely made in the 80s, and remastering would be expensive and near impossible. Yes, the menus are a little clunky and I wish they had commentaries for the videos. Some of the alternative versions are hard to find, but overall I have to say this is a GREAT collection just for the historical value. This is why these guys were so influential! They made videos an artform. They did it with their own style!

Summary: An epic
Review: A masterpiece any way you cut it. You'd have to be from the 'dark side of the moon' to not enjoy it. Great music that still satisfies today!

Summary: Duran Duran : Trying to keep alive
Review: Despite the irritating menus, these videos are very interesting. The picture quality is not perfect: It has very primitive camera work and the remasterization didn't do much. I became more interested in Duran Duran after the Kroq's "Flashback to future" concert, in which their performance was excellent. The best of the night, I should say. They are fading, which should be mentioned, so the tours are basically to keep us aware that they exist. This DVD is one of those tactics too. But a music video DVD was necessary and due. However, I didn't like the fact that 'The Chaffeur' and 'Girls on Film' had strong [prostitute] content. I mean, If I wanted to watch porn, I should have gone to a sex shop or something. Through this, I feel that Duran Duran were trying to present a "bad boy" image that was truly unnecessary. The music stands out, even if they were the "Backstreet boys" of the 80's. Still, Duran Duran wrote their music and actually used instruments. I'm not a big fan of Duran Duran, just a casual listener, but I rather spend my money on this DVD than on hip-hop or other endless crap. Overall, 'Greatest' is worth the 30 bucks, but don't forget to also buy Erasure's "Hits: The Videos," which is twice as good.

Summary: Duranies Deserve Better
Review: The good news is, these are still some of the coolest, cutting edge videos of all time- and they still hold up, despite the goofy 80's hair and clothes. These videos were like short films; each video was a grand adventure. On the minus side, the packaging is lame- no pictures, notes, etc., and the white on white is hard to read- duh! As for the hidden tracks, they are just a pain (...). It took me hours and hours to figure out (the 17 minute version of "New Moon on Monday" is pretty cool, though). Also, would it have killed them to include the videos for "Nightboat" and "My Own Way"? The sad thing is, Duran Duran really had no control over this DVD. It's the record company that owns the material. Anyway, it's still a treat for true Duranies to see these videos again.

Summary: Not Perfect, But Still a Great Collection of Videos
Review: Back in the early '80s, Duran Duran were gods in the MTV universe. Their videos were both epic and iconic: who could forget the shot of the band on the yacht at the end of the "Rio" video, or Simon Lebon's romp in the jungle in "Hungry Like the Wolf?" This DVD manages to collect all of Duran Duran's biggest videos into a neat two-disc package that fully showcases just how big they were back in the day. Plus the perks are great: the gallery section is impressive, there are multiple versions of certain videos, and you get the uncensored version of "Girls on Film" (it might seem tame now in a post Christina Aguilera world, but back then it was pretty racy). The DVD even manages to include the video for "Burning the Ground," which served as a sort of Duran Duran Megamix back in 1990. But unfortunately the DVD has some serious flaws. For starters, not all of their videos are included. That's to be expected since it's not called "The Complete Works" but it will still manage to made some people angry. Also, they should've included more archival footage (or at least the Megamix that VH1 did a few years ago). Some of the secrets can also be really hard to unlock. Heh, like the fifteen minute version of "New Moon on Monday" which makes you sit through four other versions of the song before it will play. And I wish all the videos had been on one disk, and all the other stuff had been on the other; it would've made the videos flow better. But these are all small complaints once the videos get rolling. Duran Duran might not ever return to such splendor again, but they've left behind an amazing canon of work, and this DVD manages to capture that.

Summary: Not bad
Review: I must say, I am glad I waited until I found it cheap. I think it is worth $20 but not much more. I don't understand why the beginning of View to a Kill was cut, also, what is the difference between the "uncencored" video of Come Undone? I can say the quality of the DVD is awesome. The packaging is rather bizarre (white on white ink, yuk!) Needless to say, I don't blame the band,I blame the record company. If you find it for $20, get it, otherwise pass.

Summary: Unsatisfying for die-hard Duran fans (and TOO expensive)
Review: I was so excited to find out last fall that this DVD was coming out after all of these years of waiting. However, when I found out that it was a track-by-track replica of the "Greatest" VHS collection that I already have from 1998, I was obviously disappointed. Being a die-hard Duran collector, I can't help but pine away for long-lost videos like "My Own Way," "Careless Memories," "Too Much Information," etc, etc. Then again, this is called "Greatest" and is meant only to include their biggest hits and most polished videos.

If you're wondering about the packaging of this 2 DVD set, don't. It's a plain white box that unfolds, with 2 panels of colored bars on the inside. No pictures, no booklet, nothing!

As for the hidden bonus material, WHY hide it? There are some priceless (but brief) interviews, featurettes, and alternate cuts of videos here, but to access them is a pain in the neck. There are probably 5 or 6 alternate versions of "New Moon On Monday" that are only slightly different, and only worth watching once. The most interesting bonus material has to be the promo-interview for the "Liberty" album from 1990- a commercial low-point in their career, but at least it includes MOST of the never-seen/never-played video for "Violence of Summer"!

All-in-all, it's a nice DVD to have; but mostly, it just leaves me wanting more. Maybe a special deluxe, expanded edition with ALL of their videos will come out someday. Normally, I wouldn't hold out any hope of that happening for about 10 more years, at Duran's usual slow rate of putting ANYTHING out- but low & behold, I just found out that Capitol Records is releasing 2 MORE Duran DVDs this May!!!! ("The Making of Arena" concert film and "Blue Silver" documentary from 1984) So who knows- maybe by Christmas, I'll be writing a review of "Duran Duran: The Complete Collection," watching the remastered videos of "Night Boat," and "White Lines" and listening to the band's commentary about how Nick got sea-sick on the "Rio" yacht and how Simon almost drowned on the "Wild Boys" windmill! Until then, I'll be watching my beloved VHS copy of "Duran Duran" from 1983, so I can watch "My Own Way" in its entirety.

And maybe- just MAYBE, that reunion album they've been working on for 3 years now will come out before I'm too old to care anymore.
