Summary: If you believe, you will be satisfied
Review: I saw this show when it came to Oregon, but they held it in this concrete building which has terrible sound (I heard they had been having sound problems in general on this tour); so I was eager to see how it sounded on DVD. I think there's some problems in the balance between all the different guitars, especially during Vai's set, you can barely hear Tony McAlpine (...)! I notice a lot of people criticizing Satriani; saying that he shamefully reproduces his recordings note for note live and that he sounds the weakest in the jam. Satch is a master composer; he does a little improv in his legato lines and such, his music is tightly arranged though. If he didn't play it for the most part like it is on a record then it would fall apart, thus it's stupid to hold this against him. I think Satch has the broadest style of all of them; he's the blues guy with metal technique, Ynwie's style is dominated by classical influence combined with a technique known as "tendonitis", and I don't know what Vai is. Vai's stuff is too...out there, it's composed fastidiously but it sounds like a jam, and his squealing often annoys me. Ynwie is an astounding musician, listen to any of his solos during the jam; all of the right notes are there, but he has a habit of obscuring the musical quality of his playing with masterbatory technique. His acoustic guitar solo is great, and his set will certainly glut your appetite for sonic sensory assualt, though ultimately his stage antics and ADHD playing especially during the jam leave me trying to picture him in a clown costume. I miss the Satch set from the first G3 video; The Extremist aside, this one just makes me want more. They could have chosen a better mix of songs for one thing, I can't believe Always with me Always with you still hasn't made it on to a G3 video. I don't know Vai's career too well so I can't say much about his set, I think it's pretty lame, but that's me. A good video overall, worth it if you like any one of these players. The poor set selection keeps it a star short of five.

Summary: Satch performance makes every single penny worth spending
Review: Joe satriani is the true guitar god. Every single note he hits has meaning, expression and life in it. All the way throug the concert he gives total satisfaction and amazed audience by intrducing impressive technique e.g double hand tapping, artificial harmonics, making guitar scream and 'I DO MEAN'SCREAM' he even blend pick scrapping noise along with music so beautifully. My heart simply melted with love for his musical artistry when he playd 'STARRY NIGHT' and Satch boogie and extremist just blows you right away, to be able to play with such incredible speed and (most importantly)maintaining melody along the way, he is definately 'THE EXTREMIST'.

Then comes Vai whith his triple neck guitar, excellent performance. he never failed to bring surprise for audience. if u watch this dvd then u'll know what i mean. 'I know u're here' is such a wonderful song,it simpy touch my heart right away as he stand and sings.

Finally is a Ynwie Malmsteen, and to be honest i didn't quite get his music. I can hear blazing speed but not really a melody and soul in a piece of music. well, in the end is's just what i think. Having said, if u like blazing speed he's the man.

Summary: Awesome DVD
Review: lmao...Vai and Satriani rarely change their guitars? Yeah that's why Satch has a red guitar, then a black one, then one with flames on it (which was quite sexy btw). I guess Vai's guitar changed pickups by itself between juice and get the hell outta here? And if you'd acually played a scalloped neck before you'd know that it's not nearly as easy as a regular neck to fret, but it gives you a good grip on the string for the 1.5-2 step bends that Yngwie frequently uses.

No balls in a violin sound? I guess the only way to get some "balls" in your tone is to turn bass and mids up to 11? The only thing a sound engineer is good for is turning the volume knob if you're too loud/quiet (no offense to any sound engineers of course...I just don't need you :P )

As for the DVD itself...not much that hasn't been said already.

I was a bit disappointed with Satch's performance, he was better when I saw him live (but aren't they always better when you're actually there?). I enjoyed Midnight and The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing though.

Vai...what can I say? He's the man. Easily the most fun to watch, with an amazing band all around, especially Tony Macalpine and Billy Sheen, who both have their own little solos. Watching them play feels like you're watching a bunch of friends jamming out in a garage more than a real band. Hell, even if you don't like his music, you've got to give him credit for standing up with that monster three-neck guitar on. If you enjoyed his perfomance here I suggest picking up his Live in Astoria DVD as well.

And last but certainly not least, the notorious Yngwie Malmsteen. I think I was more impressed that he can still kick up to head level than by the playing itself (but maybe I'm just biased because he took my favorite lick out of Far Beyond the Sun). Sure if you have a long Yngwie playlist it might get repetitive, but I like his style of playing. Some might call it mindless shredding but to my ears his speed makes everything sound very fluid. Performancewise...just awesome. Whatever he plays he brings this energy and exuberance to the stage. Whether or not you like his music, I'd like to see you try and argue that he isn't fun (or funny depending on what you think of the traditional 80s antics) to watch.

The jam, while no G3 '96, does not disappoint either. Each player lends their own unique style to make a tasty sonic concoction. Some say Yngwie overplayed it, but that's just Yngwie, I'm not entirely sure if he thinks overplaying is possible. Interesting singing on voodoo child as well (oh drunken Yngwie, what won't you do?)

Bottom line...if you're a fan of only one of these guitarists, this might not have enough material to warrant buying unless you must have everything. Otherwise it's an amazing DVD that is well worth a spot on your concert DVD shelf. And hey, it's only 9 bucks!

Summary: Whatever
Review: Listen up 'Dr Toner' or whatever your silly little name is, you need some educating.
First of all I want to say that Ibanez guitars are not silly as you put it, I own one and it is awesome, you might also notice if you have eyes that they have Floyd rose whammy bars on vai and satch models, so they actually have MORE!! Chance of going out of tune as the setup is more complicated than fenders. So don't spout you mouth of about things you don't know about. Ibanez's are REAL guitars, not these fender things with simple setups. Also... yngwie uses a scalloped neck which also makes it easier to play... so if anything yngwie has a simpler gutiar to play than vai or satch. So once again your simple minded prejudice is proved wrong.

I noticed also that you say that you don't play guitar.... well pick on up and learn something buddy.... and shut that big fat sh*t talking mouth of yours... you'll soon see how talented vai and satch are with their control and emotion ... yngwie is a great guitarist don't get me wrong but his stuff can often get tuneless and repetitive!!

I would also like to let you know that Vai played a fender with Zappa and on his first release so there!!! He is so good he could play any guitar, any time anywhere... so what's a talent less loser like you doing criticizing his setup. Carvin and Peavey amps are awesome and the tone is richer than any stupid violin slushy tone that yngwie pumps out... No balls in a violin sound is there?? Hehe ... his tone is awful on this DVD and my sound engineer agrees with me and he's toured with whitesnake, magnum, Iron Maiden and Deep Purple. So they actually know what they are talking about ... Dr Toner dude... I hope your feeling embarrassed if you're reading this because you are so out of order it's funny! Vais and satch's tones are warm and smooth and have feeling so..... Once again ... this Dr 'I haven't got a clue' toner is proved wrong.

Also... yngwie goes thorough picks because he likes the crowd to have a memento, not because of his playing... check out his interviews for proof of this... I have one of yngwies pick that he gave me at one of his guitar clinics and after playing guitar with it personally ... I can say that there's no way you can go through one of them in a night. So once again ... you are wrong DR EXPERT toner man!!!

Next.... we move onto another of your stupid statements ... Steve and Joe would have to change their guitars 4 times in one song if they used fenders... haha... if you actually watched these guitarist... 'I know is difficult when your head is up your own a** like yours' but you would notice that Vai and Satch hardly ever change their guitars during a concert, they use mostly the same guitars all night ...now then.... yngwie actually changes his after every song.... so there u go.. Are you a blind idiot as well as deaf !!!!???

Advice from me is......
Don't listen to this 'Dr Tone' less' knucklehead... he would know a guitar tone if it slapped him in the face... he doesn't even play guitar remember so how does he know what music is. There we go... another 'stupid wannabe expert' is shut up!! Pheeeww.... thank god!

Anyway ... the DVD is awesome, if you love virtuoso guitar playing do yourself a favor and pick it up.

Summary: the greatest jam ever REALLY!!!
Review: First of all you got yngiwe, no doubt that he is one of the greatest guitar sheredders of all time. You got Joe Satriani highly the crazyest man ever!! Then you have good old Steve Vai dont have to explane his talent. this is the greatest dvd ever made. How much emotion all 3 of them put in too this is amazing. Think about it 3 of the greatest guitar players on the earth that come out with one hell of a dvd. Its also cool how they contribue to Hendrix. These guys are as good as Hendrix if not better. Why do people think Hendrix is the best I mean really. Hendrix started it all but I still dont think he can play as fast as Yngiwe can lol or do Steve's Harp tapping I mean who can lol>>>>:)

Summary: good fun
Review: let's see
JSatriani - leaving his looks aside, confirmed his studio work is much, much better. Sounded a little messy and repetitive to me-sorry!
SVai - is my least favorite of the three, however puts out an incredible show. Has the best sound of the bunch, and his touch is unparalleled. I have to respect SVai even if I don't like his music too much. This is how aliens play the guitar. His acrobatic stunts (with a great band) are unbelievable.
YMalmsteen - leaving his physical shape aside, was the surprise of the bunch. While on record tends to get boring after a few numbers (with the exception of his collaborations with the great Joe Lynn Turner), seeing him live was another thing. This guy just shreds (doh!). So much respect for Yngwie.
Jam Session - the top of the DVD (on par with the Vai set). The three just let it rip without sounding like a rockfest jam session where everybody goes into different directions.
I liked this DVD. 4 out of 5.

Summary: Magos de las 6 cuerdas!!!!!

Summary: Impressive rather than progressive
Review: As guitar player of about 15 years now and just getting back into it, I was pleased to discover this DVD. Most of my familarity with Satch, Vai and Malmsteen was from their earlier years and were most inspiring to me to start learning in the first place. I found all guitarists enjoyable to watch, though they still sounded pretty similar to they did when I first heard them 15 years ago. In this regard, after about the third watch, I was ready for something else a bit different, though I guess maintaining a certain style continues to keep your style definition distinctive as you can always tell its a Satch riff or Malmsteen lick. And I guess no matter how familiar these guys are, its still impressive to see them play and wish you could play as half as good.
Satch's performnace was easy to listen to as he usually has some memorable melody central to his compositions, and still using his trademark artifical harmonics, which I thought at times were a bit overdone.
Vai was interesting to listen to as he still comes up with quirky sounds. I did find his overall guitar sound a bit benign, expecially in the jam session. Not sure what set up he was using but it had no real edge to it.
Malmsteen as always was a showman (though entertaing enough) and at times during the jam session almost seemed to over shadow the others restraint. Some who find the less is more approach better may find his repetitive appregios and sweep picking superfluous, but thats just Malmsteen, love him or hate him. His acoustic number was a good contrast but it seems he forgot himself a bit when he started strumming it before going back to his neoclassical self. I did find it amusing though, having not seen a picture of him for a few years, he's now a much fuller version, but still sporting the leather pants, puffy shirt and air leg kicks.
The sound was pretty good, but that may depend on what system you play your DVD's through. I find music DVD's always sound fuller in stereo. The whole surround sound thing for music just doesnt work for me as when you see a musician perform live, they're going to be in front of you, not behind you like your surround sound speakers. The camera work was good too, showing fret board close ups regularly. If you buy a DVD to see guitar playing, you're not so interested in the expressions on the players face as much as what their hands are doing.
Anyway, overall, still immensly impressed by their talents and abilities, the DVD quality and production was high, but there wasnt anything really groundbreaking by these guitarists. I guess the average person would buy this not because of what they might do, but because of what they have already done and so want to hear/see it again.

Summary: Whoever says Malmsteen sucks can eat shit
Review: The 2003 G3 tour...with the usual tag team of Satriani and Vai rounding out this year with none other than Yngwie Malmsteen. Malmsteen's popularity has severly dwindled since the dawn of the 90's, but somehow the man contiues to still makes records. While most of his releases offer nothing (musically) new, he is still an extremely gifted guitarist. His first three records in the 80's with Rising Force are probably his best 3, with Fire and Ice (92), and Facing the Animal (98) rounding out the Top 5. I've seen Yngwie twice live (before this G3 tour) and I must say I've never seen anyone play the guitar more viciously and furiously as he does. He must go through about 150 guitar picks per show. Everyone who says Malmsteen sucks here and raves about Vai and Satch need to know something about guitar playing. Any real guitarist (which I myself do not even play guitar) will tell you Malmsteen on this tour was the only one of the (G)3 playing a real guitar. You try playing a Fender Strat at his speed and not have that guitar go out of tune on you!. I'm not saying Vai and Satch are not great guitarist, because they both are also, but they play those silly Ibanez guitars that never blow out no matter how much they bend the strings. And speaking of Vai, is it me or does his guitar tone sound like it's got no balls? I mean, this dude has a crappy amp set up. So, if you put a Fender Strat in each of these guitarist hands and let it rip, you'll see them switch their guitar's about 4 times each during a song!!! I've seen Yngwie live and he does it all night long. So to wrap up my review, this is an awesome DVD, and the jam at the end is great, (actually worth the price alone!), just don't listen to all these other Amazon-knuckleheads who say Yngwie blows or ruins this DVD, cause anyone who could play guitar like him, I'd like to hear that!

Summary: Fine for one watch.
Review: I am reviewing this and calling it average because one watch was enough for me. The Satch set-up was good, the Vai set-up was average and the Malmsteen set-up was crap. When I first saw Malmsteen play in the early Eighties I thought he was probably the most exciting guitar player since Randy Rhoads. But that was 20 years ago and you can only listen to this kind of music for so long before you fall asleep. Vai's music, though technically superb, is dull and lifeless for me. I always thought his guitar dual in the film 'Crossroads' and his material with Roth was always outstanding, but his playing now, is just boring. Satch is my favaourite from the genre, his album 'Surfing with the Alien' is the best solo guitar album of the Eighties. Overall though Live in Denver is worth watching, but there isn't really much material to replay on this.
