Summary: Mixed Feelings! But still good to watch
Review: Worth the money! My first review! Having been a Yngwie fan for years, I thought I was going to see something new. Yngwie tears thru the sames scales up and down, not even abusing the apeggio sweeps as he used to. His sound is terrible, a overdriven guitar swampped with echo. I cant even hear the bass player, and you can see the poor man is playing his heart out!. As mentioned below he did butched Hendrix guitar wise and vocaly it seams he didnt leave room for the other two guys. Joe sounds great and definitly has his chops up to speed. Nice to see him playing Midnight / and Potato thing live, he definitly has been practicing his chops!. Video / sound quality also is great! and for the price its a steel! Vai is another amazing horseman, I was totally blown away with his set. From the solo piece on his three handed guitar down to the machine gun picking with his peers, this is one of my favorite parts!, they fret each others instrument! Wow! Also its great to see Vai with Mcaplpine and Billy Shehan go at it. I would have never expected a trade off of these two peolpe, a dream come true. Vai and Joe definitly gave their best on this show on each song was just amazing, Yngwie man, I love you but I fast forward your parts!.. :( since it all sounded the same.

Summary: Seriously flawed technically!
Review: Save your money. Sometimes you can hear Tony Macalpine and sometimes not. Yngwie is almost completely out of the mix in the jam session at the end which is a huge part of the show. There are stunning parts, of course, because all the musicians are awesome but why would they release this dvd with these major sound problems? If you see it for 5 bucks, get it, it's worth about that much.

Summary: Just pyrotechnics
Review: I've been playing guitar for 20 years. There is no music here. Its just three guys shredding as fast as technically possible to an audience that is 99% teen and early twenty male. Go for the G3 with Eric Johnson. EJ seems to bring out the best in Vai and Satch. Malmsteen is pure speed licks, so I guess Satch and Steve feel like they have to stoop to his level and "compete" with unlistenable results. I threw the DVD away after one listen.

Summary: Good, but the the peak of their performances
Review: Well i liked this concert, however i must say that its not what i expected, the set lists sucked totally nothing i wanted to hear at all.
Im not a fan of satriani really, regardless of how good he is, hes not too progressive, too much tremelo stuff its like pulling a rubber band and bringing it back to size (over and over again)I feel his stuff isnt progressive enough for my taste, some of his faster songs i really enjoy (back to Shalla Bal, summer song) but the excessive Wah really takes away from hearign the intricate notes.

Vai was good finger taps tight a very good showman, not a big fan of his work but nontheless i still own some of his CDs.
This guy loves to be doing what hes doing and it shows! very entertaining.

Malmsteen, well the sound quality wasnt as good as other shows hes done, not only that..the setlist sucked, i was wishing he would do something off the Alchemy album, but oh well.

One last thing the editorial in the ending mentioned there not playing music, this is bull$hit!
Most non musicans will probably be confused by his level of technical playing, not even realizing the kind of training and composing goes into these compositions. so because the majority doesnt "get" it, doesnt mean its just meaningless rambling on. This is music for Musicians, (usualy ones who are capable, not newbie power chord strummers) As far as im concerned , there playing. and it counts. Play some music? i think they did.

Summary: This is the best "electric" live experience ever!!
Review: Music and electric guitar lovers this dvd is for you! It's an awesome live experience with 3 guitar legends. Joe, Steve and Yngwie represent this instrument perfectly with different styles. Their performances are simply marvellous:

- Joe Satriani as always is at the top, really fluent, with his unique great feeling over the instrument. Really cool performances on "Midnight" and "Satch Boogie".

- Steve Vai is the "Wizard" of electric guitar: beyond-description his "I know you're here" using the triple-neck guitar to play wonderful melodies and some "extreme" shred sections to annihilate every modern shredder. Also fantastic the last "I'm the hell outta here" with a funny end-duel with the other titan...Tony MacAlpine.

- Yngwie Malmsteen: the Maestro is awesome on this concert! The highlight is surely the "Acoustic Solo" a la Al Di Meola but playing some baroque-classic themes. It's time to play Albinoni's Adagio and let me say that Yngwie is the only guitarist who knows how this piece has to be played. Also notable his perfomance on "Baroque and Roll".

About the Jam Sessions: this is the true reason to buy this concert. Unbeliaveble the first one "Rockin' in the free world"...i think they really enjoyed this jam!! The same for "Little Wing" and the finale "Voodoo Child"..with some definitive solo provided by each one.

Satch, Steve and Yngwie are three authentic electric virtuosos and true showmen! I would like to see the G3 (2001 tour) with another awesome guitarist: John Petrucci.

The quality of recording is perfect! I own a 5.1 system and the sound is splendid.

Summary: Stick with the OLD G3. Eric Johnson fits better!
Review: I have to say first off that I'm a huge fan of Satriani, and I love Vai's technical capabilities. As for Yngwie, well, he's FAST and he knows his scales, but he has no heart and just likes to make lots of noise.

That's basically what I felt like I was listening to during the entire DVD. Noise. First off, the sound quality is pure crappola. I don't know what Satch is doing with his 'new setup', but I guess he was using his pre-finalized JSX amp, and I wasn't impressed at all. The sound came off as brittle and wayyy too high in the treble range. As for his song choices, well, I like them, but he should have done something I haven't heard that often live before, such as BELLY DANCER or anything OTHER than SATCH BOOGIE and MYSTICAL POTATO HEAD. It doesn't help that I didn't like the mix.
Steve Vai did his thing, which was to make funny, arrogant poses while he shows off the cool noises he can make with his guitar, and proves that he can use a lot of gear competently. It's a virtuoso performance, but I wouldn't expect less from Vai. I liked the Live in Astoria DVD more, and I'm glad he played JUICE, but I get tired of his onstage show-offy gimmick quick. And his funny facial expressions. Get over it, dude! You're an awesome player, but your ego is even more awesome than your abilities!
Yngwie Malmsteen; I'm not a fan, and he really doesn't fit in that well with Satch and Vai. It's just his constant sweep picking and thrashing. Completely out of place and neo-classical to the point of absolute redundancy. Just get off the stage already, man!!
In the old G3 concert, Eric Johnson helped mellow the other two out, but when they are doing their G3 Finale on THIS show, it seemed as if Vai was trying to upstage Malmsteen with speed and plain annoying NOISE while Satch wanted to try and keep up with the frenzy; although Satch still sounded like Satch, it sounded to me like Satch trying to be more than what he is so he can 'fit in' with his duo. I like the Satch that finds a groove and goes with it, not the one that plays in high treble, high speed and low quality for those fast notes. Leave that to Malmsteen, duder!

I say stick with the old G3 concert. It had a lot more to offer than this racket. Plus, LIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO and LIVE AT THE ASTORIA show Satch and Vai in their better modes, and in a more organized manner.

It was hardly worth the ten dollars for purchase. Eeek!

Summary: Satch and Vai are astounding as usual and......Yngwie's not
Review: I have been playing guitar for seven years now and up until now, I have idolized mostly Metallica and others like that. I was never into shredders. I heard good things about Satch and Vai and I purchased this DVD as soon as I saw it sitting on the shelf. I was excited, for they played Rockin in the Free World at the end, which is a song my band and I were also playing. I arrived home and immediately put the DVD in the player. THe first thing I heard was Joe Satriani's intro to Satch Boogie. My jaw dropped. My eyes widened with amazement and I sat, entranced watching this man play for twenty minutes with both speed and feeling. Next up was Mr. Vai. His first song is a soft, slower song played on a triple-necked guitar. The way he used all three necks amazed me. It was the most beautiful guitar playing I have ever heard. Since Yngwie was last, I expected him to be the best.....boy was I dissapointed. He can play, hell yea, but he has no soul in it. He plays astoundingly fast, but that isnt all that matters. He seems to have randomly thrown notes together. It is, nontheless impressive. The G3 jam, though....that blew my mind. The fact that they can play the Little Wing solo perfectly synchronized amazes me. Yngwie is a stage (...), though. He steals solos and shows off. Overall, watch Satch and Vai, skip Yngwie and watch the jam.

Summary: SHRED-FEST
Review: Brief and to the point. If you`re reading this review you`re probable already very familiar with Satriani,Vai,Malmsteen & G-3.

It`s a SHRED-FEST plain & simple. Flawless technique, speed, power and passion! For some, It can be a bit of an overkill. So my suggestion is to watch in small doses. The Performance, Sound quality and Video are all very good. For those of you just starting to get into guitar and playing it`s a nice place to start.

And for those of you out there still bad mouthing Malmsteen, If you haven`t this figured this out by now you never will. He has had one speed his whole career and that`s full shred a head! Love him or Leave him, he has influenced a generation of players.

I actually prefer this version of G-3 to the 1st one with Eric Johnson. Eric Johnson is fantastic musician, but I always felt that his jazz based style didn`t quite fit in, While Malmsteen`s aggressive shred and burn was a better fit and more complimentary to Satriani and Vai`s style of playing.

I gave this DVD 4 stars overall and would have given it 5, but my one complaint is that I felt the individual sets(Vai`s In Particular)were to short!

Summary: It's ok for the money.
Review: Well I bought this for 15 bucks and I guess overall it's ok for the money. The first one to go on is satch and well it was nothing close to his san francisco performance and quite frankly a little boring.

Then we get Steve Vai which was actually kinkda cool! He comes out with a 3 neck guitar which was nice. The best part of Steve's show was when all 4 of his bandmates played each other's guitars.! You got Steve fretting tony's guitar, Tony Picking Steve's Guitar, Billy sheenan fretting steve's guitar and some other guy fretting the bass! it was crazy!

Then you have yngwie. Well I like yngwie but this guy hasn't changed his same old licks in 20 years! it's the same thing with him. then when all 3 were on stage, satch and vai played well together but yngwie wouldn't STFU! tryign to add his parts over the top of the others..etc...overall it's and ok dvd but I haven't watched it since.

Summary: A cool concert
Review: 3 guitar greats, well maybe 2 and a half. Satch and Vai are as awesome as ever and Malmsteen is still churning out the same old boring 'watch how fast I can play' crap as per usual. But overall a cool concert. The sound ain't perfect so I can't give this a five. Wouldn't mind seeing Mr Macalpine in the next G3 tour though, now that would be good!
