Summary: Great movie.
Review: There are an amazing amount of action films these days. Each one of them attempts to beat the last one's visual effects. And in this competition, hollywood has lost track of what makes a truly great action film... Skill. Most of the action films these days are entirely uncreative, and many of them are very, very boring. Who really want's to see a dozen tiles fall to the ground and break in slow motion, as films such as "the Matrix" use this technique constantly. But this film is different. It carries raw emotional power, and it's star, at age 50, did all of his own stunts, and even drove the locamotives that his character drives. This movie is awesome, and I highly recommend you buy this DvD. And by the way, this music track is a lot of fun to listen to when you're sick.

Summary: One of many great Lancaster films
Review: There are stunt scenes in this film where the camera moves in close and we see it is Burt Lancaster doing his own action scenes. He runs across a ramp above a railroad then slides 20 feet down a metal ladder without touching the rungs then runs toward a moving train and jumps onto it. Another scene finds Burt rolling and sliding down what appears to be a 200 foot hillside. He also jumps from a moving train and lands on his feet running. Good train wrecks throughout. In one scene a German officer character is standing not more than 3 feet from a locomotive that jumps the tracks. You can feel the excitement. The best scene from my viewpoint is at the end of the movie when Burt Lancaster (Labiche) faces down his Nazi officer enemy and responds to the statement of the German soldier. He does it without saying anything. It is at the end of the film we find out what it is that the hero finds worth fighting for. Other good train wreck films: Greatest Show on Earth, The General, Silver Streak and Bridge on the River Kwai. Tom Willett

Summary: One of the all-time best
Review: This DVD version of "The Train" includes all of the little perks that make watching a movie at home worthwile. Fans of both Frankenheimer and Lancaster will be very pleased with this edition as it shines in widescreen, every frame looking as though it was shot recently. This film offers the direction of Frankenheimer during his most productive and successful years. Fans of the director's "Ronin" will enjoy the realistic stuntwork and lack of special-FX. Any movie buff that has never experienced Frankenheimer's style will be surprised at how it differs from similar films of the era, and how modern it feels. The audio commentary by the director is also a huge plus for any film buffs. This film comes highly recommended to fans of the film and newcomers alike.

Review: This endless train ride to boredom is all hardware and no heart. The whole ostentatious collage is justified--so it goes--by ponderous observations on art, and not a human being is in sight. Not a lump of coal on this director's own "Seven Days in May," or "The Manchurian Candidate."

Summary: ONE OF THE BEST ACTION FILMS EVER! - DON'T MISS IT!
Review: This is a bona fide classic! One of the most influential action movies ever. Watch it and you'll see the elments that were later used in action films like Die Hard, etc.Although it is a little bit overlooked today, it remains a one [heck] of a ride! Lancaster plays a french railroad employee who works for the resistence. He and his group of three men must do anything to stop a train loaded with art treasures (Picassos, Matisses, Renoirs, Monets - no less) which is heading to Germany, according to the plans of a german Colonel who happens to love art. Stopping a train is easy - as they all discover. The problem is the art treasures who cannot be simply blown up (and that is a problem the allied planes do no know of). So, it is up to a small group of men to keep the train out of both nazis and allies power - a difficult task in the last days of WW2. The story meets many exciting complications and climaxes but the real catch is the strong performances from the two leads (Burt Lancaster and Paul Scofield) who fight each other in a battle of wills we'll rarely see again. Their antagonistic missions are the key element in a film full of great moments. The black and white cinematography by Jean Tournier is great and the DVD do it justice. Keep in mind that this is a film by John Frankenheimmer - the great director who brought us movies like "The Manchurian Candidate", "Birdman of Alcatraz", and "The French Connection". The DVD also has a great commentary by the director himself and an alternate "music-only" audio track for the Maurice Jarre's music soundtrack. This is a true great film. The only minus is the lack of a new dolby 5.1 sound mix - in a film like this, it would sure be a great thing! Anyway, the Dolby original Mono is solid enough.

Review: This is a well directed movie. Of course Lancaster is the star.
I just started collecting all Lancaster's movies, starting with From here to eternity. The train is my favorite with Run silent run deep. The DVD picture is a superb B&W transfert. Anyway you have to be a thought critic to dislike the train, it's a good 2hr entertainment. Enjoy

Summary: One of the all time Great Ones
Review: This is one of the best war movies ever, Burt Lancaster is exellent,and directed very good by John Frankenhiemer. Just as soon as this movie came out on DVD I new it was time for me to go out and buy a DVD player. The Train was the first DVD I bought, and I love it. I have never seen the movie look any better than on DVD. I really like the director complemetary on this DVD, you learn why Burt Lancaster is one of the great actors, and why directer John Frankenhiemer is one of the great directers of all time.

Summary: Responsible technology
Review: This is what the DVD technology is for: restoration of the whole image, with improvements over old VHS picture. This is one of the great films of its type and era. It's wonderful to be able to see all of it, and to see it in such clarity. The director's commentary option is fun and informative and aimed at giving a deeper appreciation not only of this film but of the art of film generally. Buying this DVD is a sound investment in a responsibly produced medium through which to enjoy a great work of art over and over again.

Summary: fantastic detailed WWII movie
Review: This movie was made when the director Frankenheimer was at the top of his game (unlike the pallid "Ronin"). The detailed movie takes many unexpected turns and in doing so it portrays the senselessness of man's wars. The performance by the athletic, frenetic Lancaster as he fights the cruel Nazi sociopath is very well done. The movie is quite sad but worth the dark ride down the rails that it will give you.
