Summary: A missed gem!!!
Review: Every bit as good as "Saving Private Ryan" but on a more intimate level. Christian Bale should have won an Oscar for his remarkable film debut. John Williams's score is one of his best ever, too. The rooftop scene (P-51!! Cadillac of the skies!!) is as powerful as any ever filmed. Parents should watch this one with their kids!!!

Summary: The best movie ever!
Review: Empire of the Sun stars Christian Bale as a spoiled young British boy, living with his wealthy family in pre-World War II Shanghai. During the Japanese invasion, Bale is separated from his parents. With the help of an american citizen played by John Malkovich, Bale learns to survive without a retinue of servants at his beck and call. By the time Malkovich and Bale are tossed into a Japanese prison camp, the boy has picked up enough street-smarts and developed enough intestinal fortitude to regard his imprisonment as an exciting adventure. The story ends in the final days of WW2, with very emotional scenes that make thi movie really unforgettable.

Review: One of best movies out there. I was on a petition to get it to come to dvd. Steven Spielberg directed it how can you go wrong with buying it.

Summary: A View Less Traveled
Review: Christian Bale gives the finest acting job of anyone his age...from a point of view of World War 2 we rarely see. Steven at his under-rated best! A must for thoughtful movie watchers.

Summary: Spielberg is a Genius in creation of a Masterpiece!
Review: This movie made Christian Bale a legend. Malkovich is Superb in a way that few actors can be. A movie worth owning. Spielberg at his best with the best of co-workers and actors. Timeless and touching, this film must be watched in silence and no disturbances. A very respectful piece and portrayed to perfection.

Review: Well, at long last...

...as an OCH (Old China Hand) for those of you who do not know, having read the preceding reviews of "underrated" S. Spielberg and "competing with" Bertollucci:]

My God! Thank you indeed for the DVD of "Empire of the Sun"!

A film I have only witnessed on asian TV broadcasts over the last 10 years or so, I guarentee it stands alone with the likes of Sir David Lean (Bridge Over etc., etc.!) and of course its compatriot "Last Emperor" (BB) as a singular and definitive view of life and death and rebirth on this war torn earth.

To all of you at home: Consider yourselves fortunate.

Never let us take for granted the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of freedom.

That is invested in all of us and all our loved ones, preciously inherited perhaps, but never granted, always won.

I only wonder why it has taken so long to reissue this piece de la resistance in universally accessible DVD format.

If Mr. Spielberg is available, would he please take a bow, just about...right now!...

Summary: Empire of the Sun where are you?
Review: This is an incredible movie if you haven't already seen it. Can't lose when "The King" directed it, and Malkovich is in it! The war at ground level from civilian's eyes. I really hpoe this one's let out on DVD but must be wide screen enhanced.
