Review: If you like military history, Midway is a truly enjoyable history lesson. In my opnion, the subplots are an unnecessary distraction, but will help justify watching the movie with your girlfriend/wife. An excellent movie to watch AFTER watching Tora, Tora, Tora.

Summary: A serious film about this pivotal WWII naval battle.
Review: The film takes advantage of actual WWII combat film footage as it presents the battle from both the perspective of the United States and Japan. Many international stars perform as the key figures in the respective naval forces. We see the battle emerge as estranged United States naval officers (father and son) portrayed by Charlton Heston and Edward Albert, meet in Hawaii and move to their respective duty assignments. The film makes a thoughtful attempt to give an historically accurate presentation of events. It is entertaining and shot with clear visual effects when not using actual combat film footage. Weaknesses in the DVD presentation are; a sound track with light background static; and during the Japanese attack on Wake Island, a few scenes appear to be lifted frame-for-frame from the 1970 film 'Tora! Tora! Tora!', and for people familiar with the earlier film, this is distracting.

Review: Action, stars, drama. It's simply the best war movie ever made. You couldn't make this movie today with the Hollywood egos and big money contracts that actors demand today. WWII action at its best!

Summary: Poor sound, over-edited
Review: Midway as originally filmed is one of the great movies of all time. This DVD is not.Problem #1: I have one of the best sound systems you can buy. The sound goes up and down and up and down on this DVD. You have to hold on to the remote just to be able to stay in the room with it because some combat footage is too loud, and other dramatic discussions are too low in volume. Problem #2: My wife grew to hate this move somewhere around 1990 because on the veteran related holidays, a good 4+ hours were lost to watching this movie. Others claim that the original was over 5 hours. I'm very disappointed with the 2+ hour version. I want to see it all. The manufacturer needs to do something to get us the complete movie. They won't, though, becuase they have to redo the sound for the DVD, and that's expensive.

Review: From all the stories I heard about the battle of Midway from
actual participants, the movie is very close to the real events.
The characters are all very well treated by the actors.
I would also recommend "Tora Tora Tora" to accompany this
movie. Have fun....

Summary: Midway - edited and no surround sound??????
Review: I saw the movie play in a theatre and I was greatly impressed.
I still enjoy the movie BUT! at the same time I am disappointed. When it was released first on VHS and now on DVD I was greatly disappointed to see how much film footage has been cut out from the original theatrical release.
In its original release MIDWAY ran for almost 2 hours 45 minutes.
On VHS and DVD it runs for 2 hours 10 minutes. What happened to all the othe extra scenes???
Where is the Battle of the Coral Sea which was shown in the original movie?
Furthermore they cut out the surround sound and made it Mono.
It is ridiculous that the have a Special Feature on Surround Sound, but the DVD was made in Mono sound. And they call this DVD a Special Collector's Edition???
Come on Universal give us the full extended theatrical release along with 5.1 Surround Sound.
