Rating: Summary: Still unbelievably funny without becoming dated! Review: Since this incredibly funny movie mostly mocks stereotypical movies (WWII, Blue Lagoon, etc.), it still remains a riot even though East Germany is no more. Nick Rivers, a phenom of a rock star, is invited to visit East Berlin for a cultural festival when Leonard Bernstein cancels. The East German Government is using the festival as a distraction while an unwilling scientist perfects a device to capture NATO's entire submarine fleet. Nick soon becomes involved with the scientist's daughter, then with the underground (an absolutely hilarious French Resistance in East Germany, complete with a black named "Chocolat Mousse", and a leader who had once been on a Blue Lagoon-style island with the scientist's daughter.) They combine forces to frustrate the East Germans' plans. Among the most hilarious moments: The German General ordering the death of an escaped spy by using a rubber stamp marked "FIND HIM AND KILL HIM", the "Skeet Surfing" music video sequence, the map of Berlin with Nick's route morphing into--no no, I won't spoil it, Nick's anxiety nightmare, from which he wakes up to find himself being flogged, and he expresses his relief, Dr. Flaumond's self-dug tunnel to freedom, the scene where Nick is crawling along the ground, and you see Nazi-style boots standing in front of him--but they are empty. And of course, the Pinto scene . . . Weaknesses are few . . . the ending is a bit forced and the underwater sequence a bit silly. That's about it. Well worth seeing, and you'll see it again. Like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, this is a movie where you and your friends will wind up reciting the dialogue to each other.
Rating: Summary: One of the best Zucker brothers movies! Review: When it comes to great comedy, I am a big fan of the Zucker brothers; their movies never fail to make me laugh out loud. As much as I love Airplane! and the Naked Gun installments, Top Secret! may rank up there as my all-time favorite movie created by the comedy duo extraordinairre, David and Jerry Zucker. I recently upgraded from VHS to DVD, and Top Secret! was one of the movies I knew I just had to buy; needless to say, I was a little heartbroken when I found out that this hilarious comedy is not offered on DVD, which it definitely needs to be. I can't describe fully how much I love this movie; whenever I needed a good laugh, I always popped it into the VCR. There are so many hilarious moments in this movie: from the sight-gag-a-second in the skeet surfin' opening credits, to Nick Rivers's suggestion on how his manager can "improve" his sex life, to the random silliness of Deja Vu giving Nick advice on how to handle life's problems in a mature way, the message of which is then shot to pieces when Deja Vu jumps head first out of a window, screaming at what he has just sneezed into his hands. There are so many more incredibly funny scenes throughout this comedy classic that it would be impossible to list them all here without writing pretty much a book for a review. Just trust me that this movie is an absolute must-see; regardless of what style of humor you prefer, I think it can be enjoyed by all. No question about it--this movie HAS to be released onto DVD! It's a strong possibility that soon everything VHS is going to become obsolete, and I feel that if Top Secret! is not added to the list of great comedies offered on DVD, that one of the funniest movies ever made could unfortunately be lost.
Rating: Summary: Just look at the stars that everyone has given this movie. Review: The stars that everyone has given the movie tell it all. This is my favorite movie OF ALL TIME! Naked Gun. Airplane. Hot Shots. Whatever. This movie does it all ten times better! They were funny. This is hilarious! What I like most about this movie is that the comedy isn't in your face like in its siblings and is instead almost hidden with its subtlety. The person who said you'll notice something new each time you watch it is right. I saw something new for at least the first ten times I watched the movie. Sure, the storyline is goofy. But this is a goofy movie. Skeet surfing. A hoarse horse. The Blue Lagoon's storyline. A little German. ET's finger anatomically relocated. Big phones. Dancing shootouts. Parachuting fireplaces. Desk boots. Bad Latin. Hitler ice-skating. Jews in Space. It's all here and more! Ok, ok. So Hitler and the Jews are in another movie, but you'll find the rest! I live for the day when I can finally purchase Top Secret on DVD to savor it for all eternity without wearing out the media. Truly one of the great comedic masterpieces. Rent it first if you don't believe me. Unless you're in a really bad mood you'll end up wanting to own this movie.
Rating: Summary: Funniest Movie Ever Made? Yes! Review: After Airplane! the Zucker brothers made Top Secret, which is, in my opinion, the funniet movie ever made! The first time i watched it i cracked up laughing. The sheer number of sight gags is astonishing as the jokes just keep on coming. Val Kilmer, in one of his first movies, is excellent as 'Neek', the singer who can take off his underwear without taking off his pants. The bizzare gags include an underwater barroom brawl and 'What funny dog Poo?' and the halarious scene with the bull (you have to watch it). The Zucker brothers' trademark slapstick gags and crude jokes are executed better in Airplane (I am serious, and don't call me shirley) but Top Secret holds up just as well as one of the truly great comedies. I'm waiting for the DVD.
Rating: Summary: Almost funnier than AIRPLANE! Review: Undoubtedly one of the funniest movies ever made, and the parodies of the Elvis and Beach Boys songs (which are actually performed by Kilmer himself) are hilarious, especially the opening credits. Very irreverent and stupid comedy from the comedic geniuses of Zucker, Abrahams, Zucker. Defiantly needs to be remixed in Dolby Digital 5.1 and DVD format.
Rating: Summary: Something new everytime Review: What a film. In the true tradition of the Airplane movies, and also the Police Squad! television series comes this 'laugh so hard you'll fold yourself in two' movie. It's true, every time you watch this film you will spot something new, some background gag that you failed to notice before. A piece of cinematic genius by the sheer number of gags it fits in to one movie. If you are a fan of the Airplane movies or the Naked Gun series this film is a must see. It should be a definite part of anybody's collection of "What a stupid joke, and yet it's so funny" movies.
Rating: Summary: Souvenirs, Novelties, Party Tricks Review: Top Secret is still one of the best comedies ever, and I can't believe it's not available on DVD - yet. Val Kilmer is hilarious as Nick Rivers, and it's true, he sings (by the way, there is a soundtrack available!). Watch for some great cameo appearances, especially in the street vendor scene and the bookstore. Followed by many imitators, none have been better than the ZAZ films, and Top Secret is their best. Buy this movie!
Rating: Summary: The FUNNIEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME Review: The title says it all. If you are a fan of spoofs, as I am, you will find this to be the best one ever made. If you are not a spoof fan but still like to laugh, you will still love this movie [based on friends who are not spoof people]. Nothing more can be said than that.
Rating: Summary: A Classic Review: I have always loved this film. I can't wait until it is released on DVD. While seeing Airplane! or the Naked Gun movies once is enough for me, I have watched Top Secret! At least a hundred times. My favorite part is when Nick and Hilary dance, but unless you've seen The Sound of Music umpteen times, you won't get it. I think this film is the perfect parody, mainly because it goes way too far. When most silly movies do this, they cease to be funny, but with this movie it really works!
Rating: Summary: Funny, Very Funny Review: This first film of Val Kilmer is definitely his funniest. He did a great acting job and kept the movie going. This is a movie that I had to watch more then once to get all the jokes. I reccomend this to anyone who likes spoofs or just plain comedies.
