Summary: Greatest Movie of All Time!
Review: I watched this movie when I was 11 years old and it excited me. I still watch this movie at 47 years old and it excites me. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. This movie shows you in great detail the planning and execution of a massive escape from a Nazi prison camp. The role of each prisoner in the escape is shown in great detail in the movie. The actual escape from the camp is very good. Some of the stars in this movie are still household names. I, in later years discovered that the Nazis who executed the 50 prisoners were tried and executed at Nueremberg. The sucess of the escape was also chronicled in this movie very well. The plight of the prisoners was also shown. This is a must see movie.

Summary: DVD looks great
Review: Very nice job on the DVD. The film is letterboxed with excellent color and clarity, especially in the more scenic second half. The 24-minute documentary is interesting and informative on the background of the film's story. The story holds up very well--not a dull moment.

Summary: An American Masterpiece
Review: this movie is an american masterpiece. it has everything. adventure, excitement, humor, seriousness, ect. its just one of those feel good movies like rocky or forrest gump. why his movie wasn't on AFI's 100 greatest beats me....it is way better then yankee doodle dandy or some of that stuff, but dont get me wrong there is alot of masterpieces on that thing. what really amazes me is that this movies has stood the test of time. it is almost more exciting then it was in '63. everone loves to cheer for the heroes as they keep breking out of prison and getting get put back in again. some of the stuff on that movie was reall funny--especiall some of the stuff steve mcqueen does. i hope everybody watches this movie. if you dont you are missing great piece of american cinema that is still wonderfull to watch.

Summary: One of the best WWII films Hollywood has made
Review: This is a war film that has all the right elements in it. Great location, great acting and a great plot. All based on true events of WWII. This and Stalag 17 are the definitive movies about life as a POW during WWII. Steve McQueen, James Coburn, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, James Garner and Donald Pleasence are a list of who's who in Hollywood and they are all in this great film. The film is about an allied escape attempt from a German POW camp inside Germany during WWII. I wont spoil the rest of the plot for those who haven't seen the movie yet. It is a fantastic plot, and one of the co-writers was James Clavell (author of Shogun). It is a riviting story that will have your interest from beginning to end.

Summary: One of the Greatest Movies of All Time
Review: I first saw this movie when I was 10 years old.Now at the age of 47 I am still watching it. This is one of the all time classics. This movies shows how the P.O.W.'s in a war camp used cunning and superior planning to pull off a massive escape. It shows the role that each prisoner played in making the escape possible. The movie showed in fascinating detail each selected escapees attempt to gain freedom. I recently read something quite interesting about the escape. The Nazis who were involved in the execution of the 50 escapees were actually punished. Through the Nueremberg war trials 21 of the Nazis involved were executed. This movie also contained some of the premiere movie stars we have watched over the years. I have bough this movie for further watching. You should too.

Summary: Does not do justice to the true story.
Review: This movie was a travesty. Its focus was too much on humor and the fictional motorcycle antics. Find a copy of the book -- one of the great non-fiction books ever -- and skip this movie.

Summary: Where Was This Film On The AFI List?
Review: The Great Escape certainly didn't get its due when it was released -- it wasn't even nominated for Best Picture, Director or any of the Acting awards. In fact, it was only nominated for Film Editing! It seems, however, that the film doesn't even get its proper due today as it was not on the American Film Institute's 100 Greatest Film list despite its large following.

The Great Escape is certainly one of the most memorable films I've ever seen. The cast includes the late great Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough (Director of Gandhi), Charles Bronson, James Coburn, James Donald (Bridge on the River Kwai), Donald Pleasance and David McCallum (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.). McQueen's performance is riveting and makes the viewer miss him all the more. Garner, who actually was a "Scrounger" during the Korean War, is terrific. It's also particularly nice to see a performance as a good guy from Pleasance and as a human being by Bronson (sorry, but Bronson truly wasted his talent in the Death Wish movies). And in an era when studios tried to substitute backlot sets for on location filming, the POW camp, which was built on location in Germany, looks completely authentic and makes the audience sympathize with the prisoners' plight even more. The DVD heightens the experience by presenting the film letterboxed in clear, vibrant colors. In addition, the DVD edition includes a documentary on both the real story and the making of the film. This film is a classic and the DVD edition does it great justice and makes you realize what a mistake the AFI made by excluding it from its list.

Here's to "the fifty."

Summary: A GREAT, SUPERB, AND CAPTIVATING STORY
Review: In 1943, the Germans opened Stalag Luft North, a maximum security prisoner of war camp designed to hold even the craftiest escape artists. In doing so, however, the Nazis unwittingly assembled the finest escape team in military service-brilliantly portrayed by Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson and James Coburn-who worked on what became the largest escape ever attempted.

Actually, that was from the back of the video case. I LOVED this movie. It is certainly one of my favorites. I watch it every time I can. Mostly on weekends because I own it. It is certainly a classic! Bye Bye
