Summary: Second only to Das Boot
Review: Robert Mitchum and Kurt Jurgens are magnificent as dueling captains in this superb tale of WWII rivals in the South Atlantic. Until Das Boot, this was, in my estimation, the #1 submarine flick of all time. David Hedison and Theodore Bikel add lustre to a fine cast. Great special effects and direction. This is one of my all-time faves and it is a valued addition to my video library. I recommend this one highly! If you've never seen it, you're in for a treat.

Summary: Excellent WWII Film
Review: Even if you have seen the Star Trek episode, this is still a great movie. I only wish the video were available in widescreen.

Summary: Tense WW II adventure...
Review: THE ENEMY BELOW has much to recommend it as a suspenseful, well-made WW II submarine combat adventure. Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens are excellent as antagonist commanders of a US Destroyer and a German U-boat stalking each other in the South Atlantic. The pacing of the film and special effects in the battle sequences are quite good. The final confrontation...though perhaps unbelievable...is dramatic and surprisingingly edifying. The Enemy Below is no DAS BOOT; it is...to great extent...an exploration of courage and daring that posits common humanity as fighting and WINNING war against the "lesser angels of our nature." Some viewers may find the sentiments of the movie naive, perhaps even cloying. This probably says more about ourselves than the audiences for whom it was originally made. Director Powell's film is a tense WW II adventure not a political film; nor an existential war drama. It is a well-acted, action-packed movie that proposes men might still find the best within themselves in battle situations against themselves and THE ENEMY BELOW...

Summary: The Best
Review: Taut, tense saga of war at sea, with superb performances from a veteran cast. This film shows how much more can be accomplished with actors, script, and direction, than with over-reliance on the hi-tech special effects which often drown contemporary movies. Of its genre, "The Enemy Below" is simply, The Best. Highly recommended.

Summary: Top notch submarine movie...
Review: This movie is about the conflict between an American destroyer commander and a veteran U-boat commander in the southern Atlantic. While the U-boat commander's only goal is to carry out his orders and get back home, Mitchum's only goal is to track and kill the U-boat.

There are top-notch performances throughout this movie. It gives, I believe, a representative view of the German and American views of the latter part of the Battle for the Atlantic.

All the U-boat crews wanted to do in the latter part of the war was to survive, and all the allied surface fleet wanted to do was to smash the U-boat arm that had wreaked so much havoc earlier it the war.

If you like war movies in general, and sub movies in particular, don't miss this movie!

Summary: Good movie.
Review: This is a great example how good the movie can be, even without any super high-tech special effects and streams of blood / as served by Mr. Spielberg and others/. Simple story but well approached. The scene, when the U-boot commander in a desperately disadvantageous situation plays a record and all crew sings altogether, deliberately revealing their position, boosting morale and displaying their will to continue fight, was great.

While German speech /English with accent/ is acceptable, real German would add much authenticity here. There was some pretty naive acting and script as well, but hey, this is a late fifties movie, and that's how the things used to be back then, so no problem at all :)

Recommend to everyone interested in WW II submarine war subject.

Summary: Couldn't be better!
Review: A great film. Reminds you of what movies ought to be about - courage, duty, honour among men.

I have a habit of imagining how movies could be improved. This one can't be!

See it!

Summary: War in a microcosm...
Review: This movie is about the conflict between an American destroyer commander and a veteran U-boat commander in the southern Atlantic. While the U-boat commander's only goal is to carry out his orders to meet w/ a German ship, Mitchum's only goal is to corner and kill the U-boat.

Summary: Good, understated war movie
Review: Yes, I do watch too much television and yes, this movie's story was copied in the Star Trek episode "Balance of Terror." I am glad I am not the only one to notice this. It is quite diverting and it is what one might call a "guy flick" (as opposed to a "chick flick").
