Summary: The Way It Really Was
Review: Again, Stephen Speilberg has brought a real-life living hell to the big screen, in a way no one else could. From the concentration camps to Omaha beach, Stephen Speilberg has made people from all walks of life, feel, really feel what it must have been like, to have lived through such horrific times. Saving Private Ryan is the best, you are right there with them war film I have or will ever see. There will never be another war movie made, worthy of watching. I have seen it in the theater, and I have purchased the DVD. The quality of the picture on DVD is truely amazing. I recommend this movie to all who want to know and see, what their fathers lived through and fought and died for. My father never talked much about it. Now I know why.

Summary: Saving Private Ryan
Review: Special Effects Rock. Content a little too grafic for enjoyment by the gentler individual. Acting was excellent, and the story was well thought out if perhaps a little too realistic. I think they did a great job

Summary: Saving Private Ryan
Review: This is quite possibly the greatest film I've ever seen. I don't remember ever seeing a film in the theater where a substantial portion of the audience came out visibly shaken, the way they did each time I saw Saving Private Ryan.

Some people would have probably liked the movie to have been an exercise in glorified gore and vicarious thrills, and others would have probably liked it to have been an anti-war diatribe. Saving Private Ryan is neither. It is simply an attempt to depict as accurately as possible the experience of being a soldier in WWII.

The result is a film that on the one hand, asks viewers to remember and appreciate the sacrifices made by their fathers and grandfathers, but at the same time, and pehaps more significantly, unrelentingly forces them to face certain questions that for many may be unpleasant.

At the time that I saw it, this film did not make me feel proud to be an American- it made me feel ashamed of it, because the heroism and self-sacrifice depicted in it seemed like a relic of a bygone era, lost to 50 years of gorging ourselves on wealth and world supremacy that was bought with our grandparents' blood. That's why the final words spoken by Tom Hanks' character are "Earn this".

Spielberg has shown a tendency in the past to be overly sentimental or heavy-handed in his message, but in this case, overall, he got it right- the film simply speaks the truth. America is obscenely wealthy and well-fed, and its citizens take for granted freedoms that people in other parts of the world die for every day. Everyone who lives in this country should be forced to ask themselves if they've earned it.

Summary: Technical merit, but why a "feel good" war movie?
Review: Because then it can be a BLOCKBUSTER and sell an ungodly amount of videos. Folks this ain't great moviemaking or story telling, it's about one thing -- MONEY. The studio and its friends are cashing in on your ignorance.

One reviewer below has stated that this isn't about WWII, I'll go further to say that this movie ISN'T EVEN ABOUT WAR. Those folks who think it is probably still believe in the Toothfairy, Santa Claus, and the Easter Bunny.

What makes this film a disgrace is, simply put, that it is a "poser". It most certainly ISN'T about war. It most certainly isn't mind provoking. It most certainly isn't even a great story. And yet it contends to be all these things. Well then, if it's so bad then why do so many people here like it?

Because it makes them feel good! And as another reviewer has hinted, if a film makes you feel good then it MUST be good-- right?

Folks, this is not history, nor war, nor some kind of tribute. Enjoy it as anything else.

What it really is is a blockbuster from the man who gave blockbuster its name. Don't read much into this movie because it will probably rot out your mind. Saving Private Ryan is the studio's way of cashing in on WWII and a generation that will soon be missed by us all. I can't believe the comments below, the shortsightedness of the blockbuster mania and the MTV phenomenon has gripped most of these people. God save us if Saving Private Ryan is the best we can do for a wonderful generation that will soon pass from this earth. Cashing in so blatantly -- the studios and the director should be ashamed of themselves.

Vote against my comments as much as you like. You're really voting against those who served in WWII, because they'd really like THEIR story told instead of this MTV tripe.

Summary: Brilliant Filmmaking
Review: I must say that when Saving Private Ryan came to the cinemas, I wasn't compelled to go see it. I usually avoid films that have hoards of lemmings camping out to see it (read SW Episode One). Pvt. Ryan had been on the video shelves for a few weeks before I picked it up. I wasn't really looking forward to YAAWF (Yet Another American War Film).

This film is absolutely brilliant filmmaking. If Speilberg had not made ET and Indiana Jones, he would not have had the creative control to make a masterpiece like this. He reminds me of Hitchcock at the height of his powers in the late 50's early 60's.

This film is riveting from beginning to end. Every scene, every shot, every sound has meaning and is seamlessly integrated with the overall artistic vision of the film. I have a degree in Film Criticism and have seen a lot of film. You quickly become jaded by formula after formula.

Speilberg has created a fresh approach to what could be considered a tired genre. The hand-held, chaotic filming of the Omaha Beach landing along with the sizzling soundscape make this sequence one of the best in cinema history. The point, however, is not to bombard the viewer with gory war scenes for shock purposes. It is a setup for the rest of the film. You are never at ease at any time for the rest of the movie. The payoff for this setup is the sequence towards the end of the film in the battle to hold the bridge.

One beautifully crafted sequence (of many) is setup in the opening sequence crossfade from the old man's blue eyes to Tom Hank's shaking hand at the Omaha landing. That crossfade is a film convention that Speilberg subverts for dramatic effect. When you see the final crossfade from Pvt. Ryan's face to the old man's face (beautifully done) it comes full circle. This subversion of a typical film convention is what makes Tom Hank's final scene so incredibly moving. You'll know what I mean when you've seen it.

Speilberg has gone beyond technical mastery of film, he has become a consumate artist, using his film making skills with intelligence, sensitivity and confidence.

Summary: One of the "Masterpiece Movies of the Millenium"
Review: Having watched more than hundreds of movies, I dare say that, Saving Private Ryan is one of the best among that.

No other movie had ever give me such realistic feelings...the feeling of desperation, the feeling of many things else that I thought one could experince them only in the real war.

Next good thing, the soundtrack by Oscar composer, John William. His music always made many of the already-great films even better.

For my conclusion, this is the BEST movie ever released from Steven Spielberg!

Summary: The Best war movie and the best movie to see.
Review: For all the people out there, this it the movie you can't miss. This is the movie that will shock you and you will remember this movie for a long time. This movie has it all. Great acting, great music, great sound, great action, and it is the best movie ever made. I know you won't think that but that's what I think. There is no way that you can't ignore this movie. It just makes you want to scream out "SPIELBERG, YOU ARE A GENIUS!" I would recommend this movie to people over 14 years of age, who likes Spielberg films, and who likes to watch war films. After you watch the movie, you have to clap and cheer at the end. This is one of those films you have to see. No dought about it.
