Summary: Recommendation
Review: One of the best movies of all times. Very high quality, each picture and sound. The madness of war is rising from the beginning to the end ... brilliant actors, Marlon Brando and Martin Sheen. This DVD is an enrichment for each collection.

Summary: Stunnning
Review: I've seen this movie at least 10 times, but never has it looked this good. The colors are extremely rich and vibrant. The Choppers sounds at the beginning are now a showoff piece for my 5.1 system.

Summary: Apocalypse Now
Review: While not quite as intense as "Full Metal Jacket", and not as realistic as "Saving Private Ryan", "Apocalypse Now" is a great look into not only the Vietnam war, but the filmmaking of Scorescese. It deals with the stardard struggles, "why are we fighting?" "What are we fighting for", etc. Good movie.

Summary: The Greatest Show on Earth
Review: This might be the greatest film since Citizen Kane. In terms of scope, no one else has taken on a project of such magnitude and audacity. Over the top? Of course. When Coppola was as the height of his Hollywood clout after Godfather Part II, he chose to risk his own personal fortune and sanity (along with the studio's) to complete this masterpiece. Perhaps the Brando segments are a bit too "out there" for many viewers, but when the whole film is taken as a meditation on several themes is fits perfectly. Every technical aspect of this film of the highest order. If there was ever a better photographed film I have yet to see it. (Storaro's other work in Last Tango in Paris and The Conformist are close). The sound design is light years ahead of anything before it. The acting, often overlooked, contains one of the best uses of narration in film history. It's too bad no one in today's Hollywood will ever be given the chance to do something this crazy. Orson was the first, Coppola may be the last. Let's be thankful that someone had the cohones to make the most spectacluar vision ever put to film!

Summary: Old becomes new, the right way!
Review: It is nice to see that some studios understand that when they "re-master" these movies that the consumer wants them to take advantage of the DVD features. Listening to the Jungle in 5.1 is really spooky. My only complaint is thet they should have incuded the documentary Hearts of Darkness. Your Purchase of this DVD will encourage the studios to release more old classics the "right way", and you won't be dissapointed.

Summary: A Masterpiece Masterfully Rendered on DVD
Review: Apocalypse Now is one of the great films of American cinema. Most people have only seen it on television or on well-worn videocassettes, more often than not the 35mm print. This DVD features the full 70mm film, with an absolutely first rate transfer. The picture is simply gorgeous and the remastered 5.1 Dolby Digital sound makes the battles more realistic and the jungle more eerie. The extras provided - excerpts from the theatrical program as well as footage of the Kurtz compound destruction (with commentary from Coppola) - add a richness to the film. While I would have liked to have seen the documentary Hearts of Darkness burned onto this disc as well, I cannot say that I am truly disappointed because a) the film is superb and b) it is getting a first-class treatment on DVD. Get this on DVD; you will not be disappointed.

Summary: My God!
Review: What can be said about this film? This movie has inscribed itself in the hearts and minds of a generation. Traces of it can be seen in almost every subsequent film in the genre. From infamous phrases like "napalm in the morning" to the masterful incorporation of the stunning psychedelia of "The End." Based on the work by Polish author Joseph Conrad, "Heart of Darkness," it explores the terrible realm that is the human heart - and the insane mind... I am simply at a loss for words (perhaps they do not exist) to explain the effect on the viewer. The buildup of suspense during the 11 minute symphony by the Doors is truly incredible. Crowned by the simultaneous execution of Colonel Kurtz and the ritual slaughter of a bull, it is one of the greatest acheivements in cinematic history. One thousand words could not even approach the length required to describe the thrill, the horror, the joy, the madness of this work. Produced with an anti-war flavour, the vilification of war, not the men who fight them, is a basic principle of the work. This movie left me speechless upon finishing it, wondering only why I had not seen it before. Truly a lifetime acheivement, this is a gem that will be treasured for generations to come.

Summary: ONE OF THE GREATEST FILMS OF ALL TIME!
Review: They don't get much better than this. The acting is superb. The direction is magnificent. The pure skill is mind-boggling. I love this film. The DVD just makes it much better. I saw this movie several years ago for the first time and didn't pay attention to it, but now that I've seen it when I am more mature and I realize this is genius! Francis Ford Coppola outdid himself with this masterful work of art. Marlon Brando was brilliant in the short amount of screen time he had. Martin Sheen was the best man for the role of Captain Willard. He identified the role so well that you can practically feel the same way he feels about what happens in his mission. The script was superb. THE BEST SCRIPT EVER FOR AN ANTI-WAR FILM! Don't miss this cinematic masterpiece!

Summary: DVD Version Finally Does Justice
Review: Outrageous. The DVD version includes an amazing 5.1 remix of the oscar winning soundtrack. Helicopters whiz by, The Doors sound amazing. Top-notch sound. The wide screen image is clean and crisp with very little digital reminants. This proves that "older" titles can be updated for today's technology. Bravo American Zoetrope.

Bonus "Alternate Ending" is included-- although a NEW voice over commentary by Coppola insists that it was never intended to be an actual ending--rather they had to destroy the set in the Phillipines, so they shot it anyway.

This is a must for all movie fans. A must for DVD fans.
