Rating: Summary: Changed me Review: I have to say that Saving Private Ryan is the only movie that I can honestly say has changed my life. Never again will I take lightly the accomplishments of the men and woman of that era. They are truely the "greatest generation" of Americans and all americans are truely in their debt.
Rating: Summary: technically accurate, but boring Review: This is one of the most boring movies from the most hyped and pretentious director of our time. If you sometimes like movies just for their technical achievements then this won't let you down, that is if you can stomach the dizzying first-person camera work. Someone needs to tell Mr. $pielberg that a person's head tends to compensate for movement quite a bit better than his "realistic" camera work is supposed to portray. Finally, the characters are more "wooden" than Al Gore, which is a serious disservice to our underappreciated vets.
Rating: Summary: Astounding, Disturbing, Yet Grotesquely Beautiful Review: This movie was one of the top ten films ever made. Most certainly it was one of the best war movies ever made. The cinematography (which thankfully won an Oscar) is superb, putting the audience right in the action. I felt the bullets go over head, into my comrades in arms, into the water. I felt that first horrible step onto the beach (or was it bodies?) and knew this was the gates of hell. This did the job of a movie to a T, immersing the audience vividly and without mercy. Some people have said that other war movies were better and perhaps they were, but in a time of Hollywood cheese (titanic anyone?)this film was a sigh of relief that at least some people are interested in more than initial effect. I saw elderly men, who had either served in the war or knew people who had, wiping tears from their faces unashamed and clenching fists at their sides in rememberance of what Hitler did. This is a great companion piece to Schindler's List. Some other great war movies are Stanley Kubrick's "Paths Of Glory" (my personal favorite), Full Metal Jacket, Dr. Strangelove ( a Kubrick pattern emerges, no?) Platoon, and Gettysburg.
Rating: Summary: great film!! but why cant the other side be standard screen? Review: Dont get me wrong this film is a ten!! the only complain i have like a lot of people is that why cant the other side be standard screen for regular sized tv's. i see a lot of dvds in widescreen format only and its frustrating watching with black borders. cant they make them widescreen on one side and standard screen on the other on every dvd cd that's made?
Rating: Summary: THE best war movie ever...one of the five best MOVIES ever! Review: Anyone who doesn't see this movie as THE quintessential war movie, is too shallow to understand its power. The best Speilberg film yet. Superbly acted, directed and filmed...a masterpiece. The academy should hang its head in shame for giving the oscar to SIL. They just can't stomach the fact that Spielberg makes the best films as well as the most profitable films, because the people like them even if the effete members of the academy don't--or won't. They should give SPR the best picture oscar for the next 3 years just to atone.
Rating: Summary: If you don't cry, your made of stone. The best film ever. Review: I know that I made an "a priori" statement in the summary of my review, but I believe it. I was in the military years ago but never had to face a war, thank God. This film kicked me in the gut and let me experience (as much as a film can) the horror of what these brave men had to go through. The performances and the directing and producing are first rate. This movie should have won an Oscar for every catagory that it was nominated for. Please, seek out a veteran and give him (or her) a hearty "Thank you" for doing what many of our current polititians refused to do. They risked their lives and their liberty to preserve ours. I will make one caveat: if you have a tender heart, please don't see this movie.
Rating: Summary: tells it like it was, hell Review: about time someone told it as it was, war is real and its hell. now people can get the facts, seeing it will give you a whole differant view toward vetrans. speilburg istruely one of the greats, ahead of his time that can direct the past.well worth the money, and its great for your home libary or a gift giver.
Rating: Summary: Gritty, sentimental war movie Review: This was a very hard-hitting (no matter if it was manipulative to a degree) war movie. The opening and closing battles were very intense definately surpassing Hamburger Hill. I didn't mind the slower middle sections that allowed for us to catch our breath. I didn't think that the Germans were portrayed in any lessor light than the Americans. Both routinely killed the wounded and the captured. Both were trying to survive. Don't tell me that a released US soldier wouldn't have recycled into another unit if he had been released. War is Hell! As far as this being basically a US movie.....it is! If you want the multi-national approach see The Longest Day (an excellent movie in it's own right). Summary....I really felt bad at the end and can now understand a little of what my father went though.
Rating: Summary: Great Film from a Great Filmmaker Review: But to the fellow from Cambridge, England I must say "get a clue". You said "I've read some ludicrous comments on this site before but the viewer from Richmond, VA must surely take the biscuit with his declaration ..." The gentleman from VA was merely making an observation. He did not suggest that Speilberg should have changed history, for God's sake! But then you go on to say "... the opening and closing scenes in the cemetery. It's Spielberg at his manipulative, mawkish worst replete with mournful John Williams music." Are you suggesting that Williams should have written a lively jig for these scenes? Be careful what you critisize.
Rating: Summary: great war epic Review: this is truly a great war movie. this movie had me believing the story and the men in it. the historical aspects of the film are wonderful. this is one of the few wwII movies that actually had real tiger tanks and the germans really spoke german. I was impressed with the detail that was put into the movie
