Summary: underrated masterpiece
Review: I am not a fan of Tim Robbins the traitor, er, the man.... however, when it comes to portraying a character as victim of perplexing circumstance, he is an excellent actor. This movie may not sink in until about 15 minutes after it is over, and it may take several viewings, and you must not skip even half a scene, but the reward is worth it. THis is deep stuff, simultaneously covering the topics of life, death, life after death, military experiments, war games, government shenanigans, hallucination, guilt, and post-traumatic stress. The score perfectly captures and extends the emotional tone of this beautifully shot movie. The acting is also excellent. I believe this movie is one made by producers, actors, directors, and a staff motivated more by quality and telling and intriguing story artfully than by box-office net income. How the hell did this ever even get made, anyway? Buy this and watch it only with people who won't whine about how dark it is. Or just watch it when your wife or husband is out...

Summary: Great Movie, Great DVD!
Review: When this film first came out, I was in my early teens. I remember liking the imagery, but I didn't understand the plot. Now, as an adult, (with a mentality slightly, and I do stress slightly, more complicated than that of one in his early teens)I found myself drooling throughout this mind-bender.

I'd like to point out to all of you who, like me, didn't "get" this film the first time- watch it again! This time, if it isn't clear, you can scroll over to the documentary which explains all of the "hidden messages."

This is a true classic.

Summary: DVD Version
Review: I had been waiting for this to come out on DVD because I heard that one of the movie channels that showed this movie years ago had a clip at the end with alternate endings. I have never seen that and was hoping when the DVD came out these endings would be included along with a discussion of what the movie was trying to achieve. I was confused when I first saw this and still am. My take was that it was all a delusion or dream as he was being rescued when in the military but now I don't know. If the DVD doesn't answer any of these questions why bother. I probably got the orig on tape somewhere. If anyone has info on the alt endings and when or if they will ever be included please let us know.

Summary: Brilliant movie, IDIOTIC choice of cuts
Review: I watched this movie and was enthralled, but there was one part where I was thinking "hmmm, the main character should have stayed and asked a few more questions there..." Well, I watched the deleted scenes afterwards and was horified to find that the climax of the movie had been stripped out of the version I saw. One of the extra scenes wasn't even included in the deleted scenes section. I felt ripped off!
Apparently upon an audience screening the director decided to take it out because they were "catatonic" after the movie ended, and I guess he wanted the happy ending to come quicker. Thats complete BS.
This is a perfect example of art being sacrificed for temporary popularity. I want to see this movie released in full the way it was meant to be seen, not some version tailored for mass consumption. I'm even more dissapointed to see that a "directors cut" or criterion collection is not available for this movie right now. I really hope that one comes out which stitches those scenes back in the movie, otherwise I can't allow this movie into my collection. Those extra scenes fill the holes currently present in the movie, and make a good movie into a brilliant movie.
