Summary: A highlight in the WW2 genre
Review: "Das Boot" is one of the best german films ever made. In terms of cinematography, editing or directing, it is on par with any american film (A rare case for a german picture, especially 1980). It is also very well written and brilliantly acted. Like "Saving Private Ryan" it is not a simple WAR IS HEll movie like the german film "Stalingrad". It rather tries to depict the life on a submarine as realisticly as possible. It shows, like SPR, that soldiers during war sometimes do things that one can describe as heroic (taking Omaha Beach, getting the submarine seaworthy again), but only because they MUST do them, not because they WANT to.

"Das Boot" is still the most successfull german film of all time and it was nominated for six Oscars. This longer version is even better because it does not jump from one action scene to the next. Beware of the dubbed version which kills the authentic mood. Or would you want to see a german version of SPR (I have seen one and it was not nearly as good as the original, imagine Tom Hanks asking translator Jeremy Davies in German what the german soldier just said)?

Summary: If you like submarine movies this is the best
Review: Video transfer is excellent. Audio is excellent. If you like the VHS version you will love this DVD. I could not find a flaw.

Summary: Best Submarine Movie; One of the Best War Movies of all time
Review: Without compare, the best submarine movie ever made. The realism of "Das Boot" is powerful. There is little glamour associated with living on this submarine.

Told from the German perspective, this story takes place during the latter stages of WWII. The depth-charge scenes are riveting and you can experience the madness of the event.

I reccomend viewing the German version (English sub-titles). Though I have never been a fan of "reading" a movie, this one is the exception. The first time I saw the Das Boot (The Boat)it was in German. By reading the sub-titles I became immersed in the movie.

Buy it, rent it, borrow it. But definately watch it!

Summary: Das Boot (DVD)
Review: Simply: This one blew me away! I saw the original quite a few years ago when it first opened in the U.S. The special effects/sound effects on the DVD Director's Cut are spectacular. I loved it. It left me wanting more movies like it. If anyone has suggestions, let me know!

Summary: Das Boot
Review: This film is a masterpiece. You can feel the fear of the crew as you will them to surmount the insurmountable. The ending has the same pathos as the ending in 'All Quiet on the Western Front' . War is hell, and this film doesn't let you forget it. The echoes from this film will haunt you.

Summary: Classic reality of submariner travails
Review: DAS BOAT is at the top of the list for films of war, films of drama, and films of teams working together, living together, and eventually.... The black and white video shows the true colors in dramatic contrast. One can live with the men as the ship sails out and on all its runs. One can feel the joy and disappointment, the thrills and the fears. This is a great war film that also ranks among the finest dramas of the 20th century. It makes one long for a long-gone era when people counted more than computers. This is superb!

Summary: Possibly the greatest WWII movie of all time!
Review: This is by far the most intense and breathtaking WWII movie ever made. Wolfgang Peterson makes you feel like you are in an actual U-boat with the realism and the awesome digitally enhanced sound. If you have an awesome digital surround sound system, this movie will bring your system to the limit! Hint to reader: tune down your sub, because when you feel the first depth charge, you might have to buy a new one.

Summary: Only see this in the original German
Review: Das Boot is one of the best war movies of all time. It contains drama, action and irony. This would be a great story in any format. The only requirement is that you only see it in the original GERMAN. You cannot get a full appreciation for this film if you see it in English. See it in German with English subtitles. The dubbed in English version leaves you with a sick feeling in your stomach since you then have Nazis with these smashing British accents. Watching it dubbed ruins the whole feel.

Summary: A comic book from a epic
Review: Das Boot in this movie was cut to make it an Action Film that if you speak German you have no idea what the hell people are talking about or doing. If you like comics you will like this film in any format. It is actually an 11 hour film, not 6 and shows the plight and character of the crew, their home life, the life under the 8th Air Force and the realization that they made a mistake choosing Hitler but there is no way out. It indicts the NAZIs and the SS and how well they lived up to the very end and just how short the good times were but leaves out how very short the good tiimes and lives were for others. If you want good War movies that are for real I recommend the German/English Version of "A Cross of Iron" and if you into the Holocaust movies like the German, uncut "Jacob the Liar" as well as many others.

Summary: awesome flick
Review: this is without a doubt the best submarine movie i have ever seen. i spent 6 years in the US Navy on fast attack submarines and when someone asks me whats it like to be at sea i tell them to rent this movie. granted these guys go through alot of things i never even came close but the way the crew acts and the look of the boat are enough to give a bubble head bad dreams. this is a war movie that ranks up there with saving private ryan
