Summary: One of the canonical war films
Review: I have seen this film more than three times now on Director's Cut DVD, more if you count the TV broadcasts of this film. This is a film where you can watch over and over again, and still find some new insights. has received many accolades over the years, and let me just say that they are all true. The acting in this film are superb, and the lighting and set up are virtually flawless. One memorable scene for me in this film was the shot of the captain in the dark when the submarine was under attack by depth charges. His face was almost ghost like, showing the battle fatigue that any U-boat captain would have endured under such circumstance. It is such attention to details, accuracy and empathy that marks a true war classic from ordinary or bad war films.

More specific to the Director's Cut DVD, I found the extra commentary on this film to be extremely insightful, and it really gives you an idea of how much this film has helped the healing process for those surviving U-boat veterans. Films like and are a testament to hellish nature of wars, and to the enduring human nature.

Summary: Loved it
Review: This is a great CD. I watched it last night and again this morning. As one audio option, there is the director's comments all through the picture. Turn on the sub-titles and enjoy both.

This is a long movie, so make sure you have plenty of popcorn. And don't expect it to be one of those war movies. This is a drama about the lives of the men in a U-boat during WWII. Surprisingly, there is not much violence. It deals more with their thoughts, emotions, and frustration with the German high command. There is action, but mostly in trying to survive depth charge attacks and equipment failures. Special effects are somewhat lacking, so don't look too closely, but I found the story line more than interesting enough to allow me to ignore any flaws.

Summary: This is a single layer DVD
Review: This is an outstanding DVD in every respect except one.
It is a double sided single layer DVD. This means that
half way through the movie you have to get up and flip
the disc over. Yuck. This is a huge distraction for me!

Summary: Perfect War Film!
Review: This film is simply the best war film ever made. The filming, sound, and acting is flawless. This movie must be seen in German to appreciate its power and potency. You do definately feel like you're a member of the U-boat crew when you watch this. After a while you really don't need the subtitles to understand what is going on. You find yourself praying for these men and hoping they survive. In the end you realize that common humanity is more important than nationality or politics! A must see for all!

Summary: Victim of political correctness
Review: Great movie but some one cut out the best part. I remember
seeing a version of this movie on cable t.v. and there was a
scene where the submarine crew members were singing a war hymn and were stomping their feet. It was a very powerful scene and in
my view showed the germans in a positive light. It made you feel
that they beleived in their "cause" and watching the scene made you feel proud of them. All in all it was still a good movie. ...

Summary: Mandatory Viewing
Review: Hands down, the best submarine movie ever made, and assuredly one of the top 5 war movies. Told from the German perspective, the story of the boat and crew over one patrol is eye-opening. The mood, the feel, the sounds, the visuals, everything, gives the look like the movie was filmed from real life. Having been on U-505 in Chicago, this movie made an even bigger impression of how the men of the U-boat fleet worked under such harsh circumstances. If you are in Chicago, ensure you make it to the MSI south of downtown on Larke Shore Drive. If you make it there or not, watch this movie. The single most recommended movie I have made, foreign or domestic (United States).
