Summary: awesome flick
Review: this is without a doubt the best submarine movie i have ever seen. i spent 6 years in the US Navy on fast attack submarines and when someone asks me whats it like to be at sea i tell them to rent this movie. granted these guys go through alot of things i never even came close but the way the crew acts and the look of the boat are enough to give a bubble head bad dreams. this is a war movie that ranks up there with saving private ryan

Summary: So much better - but why the sync problems?
Review: I bought the VHS version of the original movie version of this film but was disappointed. I first saw Das Boot (The Boat) as a multi-part TV series and - largely because of the greater amount of time available - it was really interesting. The original movie was so cut that it lost much of the continuity and in some cases the scenes were so bitty that it was annoying to watch.The DVD of the Director's Cut is so much better. But this has a down side - the running time is about 3 hours. But it is worth watching. You do have to cope with some poor sound/vision sync-ing though. As stated on the cover (of the European version), 40000 men put to sea in U-boats during the second world war and only 10000 came back. This film is based on the period of the Battle of the Atlantic after the 'happy days'. There is little happiness in the film, but you must come from it appreciating the bravery of the submariners (whether German or any other nationality) during the war.

Review: The content and the story are brilliant except ending with entirely bombed dead of vengeance by the allies. The production is miracle encoded with special sound effects for the U-boat encountered with attacks by the British destroyer and when it was targeted, the explosion sounds are so real emerging from my sub-woofer that even the sofa I sat on is trembling. What a great sound !! Salute to " Das Boot "

Summary: A well made classic that leaves you feeling claustrophobic.
Review: Wolfgang Petersen does a great job of bringing the viewer into the cramped and threatening world of the crew of U-96. While the viewer gains a great deal of empathy with the crew of this doomed U-boat, one also gets the feeling of tedium too. This movie is slow at times; in fact, it can be down right boring! I find that I have to be in the right mood to watch this video as it is the kind of movie that demands the viewers full attention. Still, the cinematography and remastered digital stereo sound are nothing less than spectacular! If you have nothing to do for a few hours and you want to watch a captivating film, by all means check out a copy of "Das Boot." Better still, add it to your collection.

Summary: Classic!
Review: This is the WW2 film I comapare all other WW2 films with. There is nothing more to say, BRILLIANT! Maybe Hollywood with all its expertise can make some mor movies like this. I enjoyed saving private ryan, but all the sentimentality and the fake tanks, and bogus tactics just destroys everything. Do like Das Boot, be authentic, and bring in some real "people"

Review: I love the Director's Cut of das Boot. I first saw it a long time ago in the English dub, and I still thought it was still good, and I am for the most part opposed to dubbing over perfectly good film. Anyway, the director's cut is in the three hour range, but you will never notice because it is _that_ good. As for the DVD, having to flip the disc doesn't bother me much, but a two layer disc would probably be better. My actual complaint is the subtitles. German is not an option, even thought the movie is in German. I speak German tolerably well, but I have trouble folowing some dialects, especially when there is a good amount of background noise (crashing seas, diesel engines) and German subtiles would have helped immensly. So I had to watch it with the English subtitles. Oh, well.

Summary: Terrific WWII pressure cooker
Review: This a terrific WWII movie told from the point of view of a German U-Boat crew. We are told at the beginning of the movie that 40,000 German sailors went to sea aboard U-Boats and only 10,000 returned. This sets the mood for the whole movie. The movie is shot amost entirely inside the boat with a lot of hand-held camera work which reinforces the feeling of caustrophobia. The acting is universally fine and the expanded story never drags, even at over three hours. The picture quality is great and the audio is outstanding, though you will need a system capable of reproducing Dolbly 5.1 to get the full effect. Also, if you don't feel like reading subtitles, you can listen to it in English (also in 5.1 and the best voice-dubbing work I've ever seen in a movie, IMHO). Bottom line: a great movie made better by a quality dvd.

Review: Five stars for both the movie and the DVD features. The director refers throughout the commentary to his feeling of pride in this version. That pride is fully justified. Finally, the enjoyment is crowned with the knowledge that the movie closely follows the events of an autobiographical account.
