Summary: See it now
Review: Outstanding movie: First-rate cinematography, excellent acting, exceptional directing & editing, extraordinary sound quality, ... BLACK HAWK DOWN is about the 1993 battle in which two U.S. Army helicopters were downed and nearly 100 U.S. Special Forces troops were trapped overnight in a hostile section of Mogadishu, Somalia. These Special Forces were awarded with two Congressional Medals of Honor for conspicuous heroism. Tragically, 18 Americans were killed in this battle.

Very few movies portray combat realistically. The vast majority of war movies show us a phony heroism in a fabricated combat. This movie realistically depicts what actually happened in that unfortunate battle. It very definitely is not for the squeamish. It tells us about the true heroism, patriotism, dedication, skill, and sacrifice that the Special Forces made in this conflict. Their devotion is well expressed in the closing verse of the anonymously written, memorial poem Black Hawk Down:

They gave without asking
A reward never known
They sacrificed freely
And our brother came home.

After seeing this movie, you will better understand why the U.S. Special Forces troops were so brilliantly successful in Afghanistan.

Why did the Mogadishu mission fail? BLACK HAWK DOWN provides us with the answer. The Mogadishu mission did not fail because of any Special Forces inadequacies. This mission failed, because Washington D.C. failed to provide the Special Forces with the proper tactical air and ground support that they so desperately needed. If the Special Forces had the AC-130 gunship and tank support that they had requested, the Mogadishu battle would have been transformed from defeat in victory.

Summary: Amazing and gripping modern day war movie
Review: I walked out of the movie in awe. I think this movie is just what the American public needed after the tragedy of Sep 11th and the beginning of our war on terrorism. The story was well told and from what I have read it was pretty close to what actually happened to our heroes in combat. The special effects are incredible and I think Ridley Scott did a fantastic job of putting the audience in Mogadishu. This is a must have DVD for any military movie buff.

Review: From start to finish this movie had all the characteristics of an epic war flick. Character development, gripping action and realistic battle sequences and the Acting was superb. This movie rates right up there with Saving Private Ryan and Platoon. It really shows how our special forces can hold it all together while it is coming all apart. And the fact that it is all a true story greater exhonorates our brave forces. My advice,,,buy it,watch it, and read the book.

Summary: Greatest War Movie Ever Made
Review: I collect War movies as a hobbie I have over 200 Different war movies all related to American Wars, or Conflicts. I never read the book, but I knew of this Conflict so I couldn't wait to see the Movie. I was Amazed at the whole thing. What I liked the most was that it showed everything, they didn't just go half way and say we can't show this, they showed it all, and This movies makes me proud as hell to be an American, when you watch all the Wounded Rangers and Delta Force climb back into there humvees and go back into the City for the rest of there Men, you can be watch and know that really happened.

This movie though isn't a good one to go and watch if you are Weak Hearted or Want to See acting, this really is not the movie for you. Its more of a Documentary. It basically shows the real effects of war and shows everything that happened on Oct 3rd and Oct 4th 1993 in Samolia. From the start of the Mission, To the Attack on the Humvees, From the 2 Delta Force Soldiers taking on over 200 Samolia Militia, to what the Samolia Militia did after they killed the 2 Delta Force Soliders, it even shows the Walk out, when the Rangers and Deltas left had to Walk out of the City.

Over all its a GREAT! Movie! And if Anyone who was there reads this I SALUTE You!

Summary: Black Hawk Down, the best movie of all time!
Review: As said, this movie definitely is my favorite of all time! The true story of the botched 1993 U.S. raid in Somalia that turned from a military mission to a hasty rescue operation was a very inspirational film as the pointless objective of those soldiers immediately turned into an incentive to get their brethren out of the clutches of the troubled city of Mogadishu. Ridley Scott's amazing visual attention and Jerry Bruckheimer's unstoppable action filmmaking truly account this classic as not only the best war movie ever made, but the best movie in general.

Summary: Best movie ever made
Review: Forget LORD OF THE RINGS, forget A BEAUTIFUL MIND. This film deserved Oscars for Best Film, Director, Cinematography, Score, etc. BHD is one of the most powerful, gripping, and human movies ever committed to film. Definitely Ridley Scott's (Gladiator, Hannibal) best film.

Summary: Blackhawk Down
Review: I was one of the soldiers there that fate filled day in the Mog. Although each movie character plays many different actual real life soldiers due to cost of making a movie they did an excellent job showing the general public the intensity of the battle fought there in the 17 hours that seemed like 17 days. I suggest reading the book before seeing the movie as with any book that has been turned into a movie, but just to get an in depth look at the lives of each and every soldier who was there. Keep in mind that not everyone there was recognized in either the movie or the book but we all came back as a team, and in some ways a closer knit family.

Summary: America at its best, in a worst case scenario.
Review: This film is by far the best depiction of special operations and units that I have seen. After the first twenty minutes, it was one long fire fight. must see.

Summary: A Different Kind of War Movie
Review: Ridley Scott's film Black Hawk Down does a good job presenting Mark Bowden's book by the same name. After reading the book and seeing this film I was astounded by how little I knew about this particular event.

I recall the CNN tape of Corporal Michael Durant held captive by the Somalis and saw the hideous footage of the two American servicemen's bodies being dragged through the streets, but I had little idea that this was the result of a 25-hour battle. I didn't know that we lost 19 of our troops with fifty-seven others wounded.

The film starts off with a little backdrop - Somali warlords commandeering the food deliveries being made by the international relief effort. The U.S. stepped in with 20,000 Marines to restore order and order was restored, at least until the Marines were evacuated. As soon as the Marines left Mohammed Aidid an Al Qaeda associate declared war on the U.N. and began to attack the food shipments again.

By October of 1993 there was only a few Battalions of Army Rangers and some Delta Force commandos based in Somalia. Washington wanted "something done about Aidid," but when the base commander (played by Sam Sheppard) asks for more firepower he's denied. So on October 3rd, 1993 the U.S. forces set out on a mission to capture Aidid at a meeting in Mogadishu. The plan is to cover the four corners with Black Hawk helicopters, while a Ranger Battalion goes in with armored vehicles to take the prisoners. It's supposed to be a no muss, no fuss mission...over and done in a couple of hours.

Of course, it didn't happen that way. The Somali militias are well armed with surface to air missiles (RPGs) and automatic weapons. What follows is a twenty-five hour pitched gun battle and that is the focus of this film.

The battle scenes are graphically vivid and almost unending...some 80% of the film is compromised of this single engagement. The film is often disturbing, often repulsive - a makeshift "operation" on a soldier dying from a bullet wound that severed an artery is particularly gruesome.

Still, critics who bash this movie for "lack of character development" and a weak story-line, referring to it as a "dressed up documentary," miss the point that THE UNIT IS THE CHARACTER. The battle and the troops response to this unexpected bit of war was the STORY-LINE. The battle itself is the protagonist and the human reaction to massive carnage is the story.

It's hard to compare this film to other war movies. It has the terrible reality of the D-Day scenes in "Saving Private Ryan," but it's focused entirely on a single horrific event. The battle scenes are grisly, realistic and the acting is first rate. The film depicts an ugly reality, but in my view, it achieves its objective convincingly.
