Summary: Brilliant and disturbing film
Review: This movie was one of the most disturbing films that I've ever seen. I thought that it was a grueling, difficult and fascinating film to sit through and worth every difficult minute. Walken is brilliant and heart breaking in his role. The rest of the cast is solid and give terrific performances. When I came out of the theater after seeing it, I ran into a friend of mine who talked with me for over a half hour to calm me down. Otherwise, I probably would have wrecked the car driving home I was so upset by the film.

Review: The Deer Hunter was awarded the Best Picture that should have gone to Apocalypse Now the next year. Very long with dull scenes that have nearly no actual truth to Vietnam. Boring script and acting make this one a pitiful three hour piece of trash.

Summary: The best Vietnam War movie ever made.
Review: The is one of my favorite movies of all time. The realism of the main characters, of which the most notable are Robert De Niro, Christopher Walker, and Meryl Streep is especially compelling. Although I have seen this movie over a dozen times, I have yet to make it through the final scene without crying. Absolutely superb acting, cinematography, and film editing.

Review: Many people seem to be angry at the fact that the movie portrays soldiers playing Russian roulette with their captors. True, there are no documented cases of this happening BUT that could be because everyone who did play it is dead. Anyway, it is a well acted film that is about friendship and the way war changes people. Take the movie as it is do not look for any hidden themes. If we did that to every movie then there would not be one good movie ever. Worth you time and money.

Summary: Political pundits: this is a MOVIE, not idealogical expose!
Review: It charms me that people continue to talk about this movie in political terms even to this day simply because leftist, liberal politics are presented in poor light. This is a movie, and never claims to be a documentary. However, that it has touched the nerves that is has over that last two decades only underscores the truth that lies beneath the non-historical elements of the story. And that truth is: leftist politics are based on a desire to CONTROL, CONSUME, and anyone who gets in the way is MURDERED (the Clinton administration provides ample examples).Let's compare the treatment that DEERHUNTER has received with a leftist, liberal propaganda piece of more contempory origins: BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY. BORN claims to be a true story, being based as it is on historical characters and "events". YET the film DELIBERATELY LIES in some keys areas. One of these lies is that the physical confrontation depicted between the "anti-war" (seems like everywhere they went violence ensured, interesting, isn't it....) protestors and the officials at the Republican Convention. This NEVER OCCURRED. This ACTUALLY occurred at the 1968 DEMOCRATIC Convention in Chicago. There was no physical contact made between such protestors and Republican personnel at the depicted event: this is clearly documented by actual newsreels of the day: no protestor even gained access to the proximity of the grounds depicted. Why would Oliver Stone transplant the violence that ACTUALLY occurred at the Democratic Convention and present it as occurring at the Republican Convention? Because Oliver Stone does not care for the TRUTH. There is nothing wrong with lying about the people who espouse the very truth you hate so much, but just do not pass it off as "historically accurate." Oliver Stone and Tom Cruise make me puke. THE POINT: Why is THE DEERHUNTER still tainted to this day with the NON-issue, NON-need of defending itself against its negative depictions of leftist, communist regimes when it never claims to be a true story when Olive Stone leftist films can OUTRIGHT LIE about historical events all the while being self-proclaimed as HISTORICALLY ACCURATE? And NO ONE SAYS ANYTHING! Enjoy THE DEERHUNTER--it's just a movie. Superb storytelling and characterizations.

Summary: Absolutely amazing acting!
Review: Robert Deniro proves why he is the greatest living actor! His performance is mesmerizing! Christopher Walken is magnificent! The russian roulette scene is the greatest acting scene in a movie, ever! The only question I need answered is how could Robert Deniro not win the academy award? He is the whole movie but they give the award to Christopher Walken. Deniro was robbed!

Summary: Absolutely Classic
Review: The Deer Hunter is a classic film depicting the horrors of the Vietnam War, not only through the eyes of the soldier in country, but through the pain of emotional separation felt by those left at home. It is also a story about growth and maturation, about entering manhood and womanhood through circumstances forced upon each of the characters through fate. The acting by EVERYONE in this film is supurb, and it is this reviewer's personal opinion that despite what Christopher Walken has done or will do since he performed in this movie, he can do no wrong.

Review: Although "The Deer Hunter" won best picture for 1978, I found the movie dated and not relevant to a modern audience. The whole Vietnam thing and self-loathing Americans is passe. The sound and picture quality on the DVD left a lot to be desired.

Summary: A great comment on war
Review: Before I begin my review of The Deer Hunter, I need to concede a few things that are wrong with the film. First of all, we all know that nobody played russian roulette in Vietnam. I'll get back to that in a minute. The film is also undeniably racist. Now, I don't admit to being a real P.C. lobbyist (I've been known to tell my share of inappropriate jokes), but the way Cimino portrays the Vietnamese is embarrassing. All of them seem to be babbling idiots. And finally, this work does seem to be the work of an overactive ego (Cimino), but then again all you detractors, he got his just desserts in "Heaven's Gate." Now, let me talk about why I like the film. The russian roulette may not be true, but it does do a fantastic job of illustrating how war is a fruitless exercise. This film speaks less about the nature of the Vietnam war (which, overall, it does a pretty bad job of) than it does about the nature of war itself. But since it was so *hip* back then to knock the Vietnam war and all the veterans who fought so hard for us, Vietnam must've seemed a convenient setting. When I watch this film, I like to focus less on the politics of it and more on the performances, which are uniformly superb. De Niro has never been bad in any movie, likewise Streep (who looks radiant in this one). The two Johns, Cazale and Savage, are quite good in their roles too. The real treat for me is the performance of Christopher Walken as Nick. Seeing Nick's slide from carefree charmer to suicidal robot at the end of the film is one of the best supporting performances I have ever seen, right up there with Kevin Spacey in "The Usual Suspects". Walken won one of the most deserved Oscars ever for this film.
