Summary: This is one of the greatest films ever.
Review: This is quite simply the greatest anime ever made. Period. Thisis the anime you show your friends to explain exactly why you spendyour hard earned money on "cartoons". And even non-anime fans HAVE to see this movie.

Not a good enough reason to see it? The story is the most heartbreaking and beautiful stories you'll ever see and is simply beyond words. The animation is so beautiful that it doesn't seem to be an animated film at all and it's more moving than any other war movie. END

Summary: One of the best movies I've ever seen...
Review: live action or animated. Powerful, gripping, touching, real. Beautiful. I wish more people knew about this one.

Summary: the saddest anime ever (marvellously) done
Review: What can I add to the other reviews except that this is the movie animation that always gets me into tears (believe me I watched it 15 times and the result is still the same) whenever I watch it. Released as "My neighbor Totoro" in 1988 in japanese theaters and by the same studio (Ghibli), Isao Takahata (co-founder with Miyazaki of Ghibli) prefers to deal with realistic subject and serious issue rather than to focus on fantasy themes and environmental issues like his colleague Miyazaki. Ghibli's movies are must-see movies for any true anime fans. If you like "grave of the fireflies", you should like "omoide poro poro" (or Only yesterday by the same director). If you admire Kurosawa's movies as well as Miyazaki's, then run to watch Princess Mononoke.

Summary: An excellent movie
Review: Grave of the Fireflies is a heart wrenching film that is worthy of stellar reviews. You can't keep the tears from falling. A powerful antiwar film that transcends the war on which it is based. It applies to every war. The helpless are the ones who suffer most.

Summary: Amazing
Review: It's fascinating reading the other reader reviews for this movie. If they don't make you want to see this movie, nothing will. Out of 54 reviews that I read only two people gave this movie four stars, while everyone else gave it five. I was lucky enough to see this movie at a theater as a part of a Studio Ghibli marathon. I don't know what I can say to add to what other reviewers said earlier. Everyone who owns a TV should see this movie.

Summary: one of the best anime ever created
Review: "Grave of the Fireflies" is a moving and brilliant act of storytelling. The animation is gorgeous and the voice acting is great. It is actually the only anime that made me shed a few tears and it got me very emotionally involved in the story. I strongly recommend this title to be added to anyone's movie collection.

Summary: ...what can I say? frightfully beautiful and realistic...
Review: ...a story during World WarII. This film has limited its point of view to only these 2 young and poor kids, and they have to suffer in the non-stoppable cruelty of World War condition. This film will give you a different opinion about war, a really simple but yet astonishingly captures our deepest heart with its point of view.

The only film of the last 2 years that can make me cry...simply because of its sweet 'touchness' in story and music. A really must-to-see film! And lastly....what can I say? frightfully beautiful and realistic..,

Summary: a perfect specimen of cinema/anime as an art form
Review: Towards the end of this excellent and unparalleled anti-war and very human movie, right when the Japanese declared their defeat, Galli-Curci's rendition of the standard Home Sweet Home came on, and all the hitherto untapped well of emotions in me (and others who've seen it) broke lose. The scratchy sound of the LP, Galli-Curci's quavering and sorrow-filled voice (I rushed out and buy the CD), and the harrowing feeling in the face of the young protagonist's courage and the unfeeling violence around him all combined to create a truly unique moment that turns art into life itself. Like some of the other reviewers, I rarely if ever cry during a film, but this film did it, it makes me cry everytime I watch it: the music, the animation, the storyline are very powerful.

It's hard to describe the emotional impact it has on me and on everyone I've recommended it to (and I've recommended it to everyone I care about). I once showed it to three of my nieces (ages 10-13) on their visit and three years later, they were still talking about it and asking to see it again and again: such is the impact of this once-in-a-lifetime film. It's very organic, not preachy at all, yet its anti-war message is so clear, and it zeroes in on the human in all of us instead of trying to manipulate emotions from the outside.

All in all, one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. Watch it with someone you love, be it your brother or sister or parents or children or boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse. It's very harrowing yet uplifting at the same time; watching it is an experience to be savored and shared with a loved one for a long time to come.

Summary: A Masterpiece
Review: I am a history teacher and have been showing this movie to my students ever since I have gotten hold of this movie on video. It is a great anti-war movie that should be watched by all especially the young; though it may be disturbing for them, there is a great lesson to be learn from it - there are no winners in any war. An essential movie that should be in every school's library.
