Summary: dvd review
Review: I believe, Grave of the Fireflies is one of the most powerful movies that has ever been made: animated, live-action, or otherwise. This is an extremely poignant story meticulously crafted to achieve maximum impact and what an impact it is. There are scenes that will undoubtedly burn themselves into your memory to haunt you for the next few days, weeks...maybe even years.

Every aspect of this film has been skillfully and artfully placed to help reach its level of universal power. The art and animation are simply gorgeous, capable of portraying sunny countryside and burned-down village alike in a style highly reminiscent of Studio Ghibli. You can almost taste the salt in the air at the seashore, smell the ash as the village burns down. Simple orchestral melodies sprinkled throughout enhance the viewing experience even further, resulting in an engrossing experience only rivaled by actually visiting these locales yourself.

Of course, there's more to Grave of the Fireflies than great cinematography much more. Grave features an all-too-believable story that will tear at anyone who calls him/herself human. Rather than resort to preaching to bring its anti-war message across, this film simply presents its evidence to you in all of its tragedy. Innocent Setsuko and intrepid Seita are two children that you'll swear you've met before, and watching them suffer through the aftermath of the fire-bombing will break your heart. Knowing their eventual fate beforehand does nothing to diminish the effectiveness of the story; in fact, it only intensifies the reality of each scene. The beginning unfolds evocatively, and the end closes by bringing the story full-circle, leaving viewers with more questions than answers as they wipe the tears from their eyes.

For the record: yes, it is_ possible to see this movie through without shedding a tear, but you'd have to be one cynical and jaded fellow. I can recognize the fact that Grave is truly a masterpiece that everyone should see eventually.

Summary: A Gripping movie that brands itself to your soul....
Review: I am not kidding. This movie is even more gut-wrenching after repeat viewings. The saddest movie you will ever see....

One viewing of this for anyone 13 years and up will leave a profound impression on them. It will change your views on war and temper them with the harsh realities of war. Many of the reviews below have talked about this movie's impact on their lives. Let me list some salient points here:

* Extremely well animated characters - though these characters seem to be misproportioned, they reflect children and childhood very well. Setsuko especially so...

* Haunting music and voice acting - Watch this in the Japanese with Subtitles for full effect. The way the record player is used will leave you crying for more.

* Attention to the background detail... You will never see the beach or fireflies the same way again... The soft color palette of browns and yellows all work really well in portraying these characters.

Anyway, have a box of Kleenex handy, because you will need them.

Summary: Tragic and breathtaking
Review: Be warned, unless you're heartless this movie WILL MAKE YOU CRY.

Grave of the Fireflies is an incredibly tragic story of two children in WWII Japan, a sort of story not commonly heard on this side of the pacific. I'll spare the details in this review, just watch it. This movie is well animated, and... beautiful, real, and heartbreaking.

The raw emotion in this movie is amazing, you feel everything from the bitternes toawrds the selfish relative who "takes care" of Seita and Setsuko for a while, to the worried helplessness of seita as his little sister begins to waste away from hunger.

If you can't handle a sad movie, steer clear of this one, but anyone who can let themselves cry will be awed by the profoundness of this film.

Summary: The single best drama movie. Ever.
Review: Ghibli is a sign of quality. From movies to music Videos (Such as On your mark, by Chage & Aska), all it's productions contain a certain something that makes you keep them in your heart. Grave of the Fireflies is one of their best.

The story centers on Setsuo and Seita, a brother and sister who lost their mother in the second world war, and whose father is in the navy. Don't worry. I should first clear out this: This movie isn't biased: You won't hear japanese glorified nor americans bashed... But you'll hate war when you end watching it.

This is, plain and simple, the saddest drama ever. Animated or not. And it's one of the most intelligent ones, too. The symbolism and analogies managed will surely click a soft spot in people who have lived war. the pinnacle of all this is the scene where they're catching fireflies to light up their room. It's hard to contain a tear when watching this.

The visuals aren't bad at all, either. Despite the fact that it's showing it's age, since it was made in 1986, the animation is smooth and beautiful, and you sometimes stop seeing it as drawings. Of the music, it's on par with everything else. It's a great soundtrack composed primarily by instrumentals by the recognized composer Jo Hisaishi.

In the end, it's hard to imagine anyone who wouldn't like this movie. It's the most touching film I've seen in my life, and it's not far away from the best movie ever. Just be sure to pick up "My Neighbor Totoro" to lift your spirit after this emotional tour de force.

Summary: One of the best anime ever. Period
Review: This movie is almost flawless. It tells a heart-shattering story about Setia and Setsuko, two young people trying to survive in WWII Japan. If you liked Ghilbi's other drama, Princess Mononoke, you will like this. This isn't a sob story, nor is it sugar-coated. It is an honest and realistic story about beiliveable characters in a beilivable setting faceing beilivable problems. Adults will love this.
Just watch this, you won't be disapointed.

Summary: fireflies
Review: grave of the fireflies is the based on the story written by Nosaka Akiyuki. He is 70 year old man and he is still on TV. He is known for his funny personality and many people would be surprised that this sad story was by him. He won the prestigious prize for "American Hijiki." Grave of the fireflies is set in Osaka area during WWII; you can tell by their accent.

I think this story indicates how kids couldnt live as being a kid. Kids were demanded to grow fast in order to support war. The brother and sister were the children who just lived as they were and this story tells us how children couldn't live like them back then; this is very significant in how the story ends.

i was very young when this was first appeared. But the second time I was very much frustrated by the brother because the healthy young man didn't help society and all he does was playing with his sister. After I watched the movie, I thought this might indicate that kids couldn't live as they wanted to be. The boy lived as he wanted, he enjoyed being a kid.

Due to the pollusion by industorial factories and so on in Japan, the number of fireflies are decreasing. The song "the light of fireflies" are sang at graduations; this sort of connotates goodbye song, i think. These two facts came up to my mind when I heard the title. Someone might be able to connect these arguments better.

Although I didn't like the movie that much, but anime is a good way to approach generation who don't know war.

Summary: Dramatic and Touching
Review: This was the saddest movie I've ever seen. About futility and truth, this movie portrays the aftermath of the attacks on Japan through the hardships of a young boy and his little sister. Although there isn't much of a plot, there is a great deal of character development, emphasizing the tragic ending.
The touching brother-sister relationship itself brings tears to your eyes. In short, this is a spectacular film, and one to be enjoyed by all.

Summary: Depressing... you have been warned.
Review: This movie is another production by Gibli studios (Princess Mononoke, My Neighbour Totoro), is another masterful creation.

Grave of the fireflies tells the simple (but overwhelmingly depressing) story of a boy and his siter, trying to survive during the attack of the americans during world war II. In truth this movie is no about Japan, or America, or World war II infact... its about war in general, and its victims.

War has got to be one of the most incredibly stupid 'things' ever. War is not a reasonable solution, nor is it a preventative measure. War cannot be classified in any situtaion as essential nor compromising.

War is a distinct failure in society, and the ability of humans to think reasonably. And the result has no winners, only victims, which is what Grave of the Fireflies shows (in a very excrutiationly sad manner).

Make no mistake, this is a brilliant movie. Just make sure you bring some tissues, and maybe bring someone to hug, even if it is a teddy bear.
