Summary: Worst Piece Of S_H_I_T I ever had
Review: I wasted about $900.00 on this f_U_C_KING electronic garbadge. It worked fine at first then the last few months I have been getting more and more DISC WARNINGS!!!!!!!!!! How many people have seen that before? DR ________bite (*&^*((* me. Thanks allot to Phillips for having the decency to sell this JUNK to unsuspecting DVD lovers. Now that I know about a thousand other people have had problems along with mine. Im gonna take mine apart or throw it on a concrete pavement somewhere and take more of my frustration out. I HATE THIS MACHINE and I hope whoever invented it and passed along the unit to sell dies!

Summary: Pure Junk Should Be Recalled
Review: I bought this unit a little over a year ago. I thought this was the coolest thing , I was able to record TV shows just like a VCR. This unit is not so easy to use, my wife just never quite got the hang of it, yet can work the VCR just fine. Everything that you might want to do with this thing is on the remote. Then the problems started happening,. "Disc Errors" These are very discouraging,, after spending hours recording stuff to find that your time was just wasted. Then it started "Not reading pre-recorded discs". It also has trouble if you want to "Skip to chapters toward the end of the disc". I have had
it in for repair 2 times under warranty, and now since that ran out my last visit to the repair center was the last straw. The repair of the unit requires the DVDR laser system to be replaced. The cost is $683.00 which is $134.00 more than I paid for the unit new! I called Philips to try to get some help, but they tell me that the cost of repair parts on discontinued units is very high because they don't make them any more, and the high request for these parts. The fact that there is a high request for the parts should clue someone
in on the fact that this unit should have been recalled and replaced with a unit that will work more than a few months. My guess is that they could not do that, because all they sell is JUNK.

Summary: UNRELIABLE
Review: I owned this unit for about a year. It worked fine for awhile but then the clock became fast. Within 2-3 weeks of setting the clock, it would become 10-15 minutes fast. This meant all of my recordings would start and end early, and I would miss the end of shows. Every other electronic clock in my house--from the microwave to a cheap radio alarm clock--keeps better time than this thing. This should be obvious, but I guess no one told Philips: When you build a recording device, it's critical that the clock be accurate.

Review: I also made the mistake of buying this sorry piece of cr*p. My unit has had very little usage and is already broken. When I first purchased this, I had planned to use it in place of my older Toshiba progressive scan player, with the added benefit of being able to record. However, the picture quality on prerecorded (i.e. manufactured) DVD's was very poor compared to the beautiful picture I was used to from my Toshiba player. So I put the Toshiba back and relegated this to my upstairs bedroom. I have a large number of recorded DVD's of old Mystery Science Theater episodes. When I first started playing them with the Philips unit, I experienced no problems. Two months later, the unit now fails to read practically every recorded DVD that I try to load. Mind you, these discs have no flaws, play just fine on my PC-based DVD units, and USED TO WORK in the Philips unit. Add to that the fact that the flourescent front panel display has already started to flake out, and this unit probably has had less than 100 hours usage since I bought it. This is the first, and LAST Philips home entertainment product I will EVER purchase. A VERY EXPENSIVE MISTAKE. Avoid this junk, and buy Sony and Toshiba. You've been warned. And when is Amazon going to come up with a ZERO stars rating? To rate this product with even ONE star is giving it far too much credit.

Review: THE PHILIPS DVDR985 DVD RECORDER WORKED FINE FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS. AFTER THESE COUPLE OF MONTHS IT BEGAN SHOWING "DISK ERROR, DISK WARNING, NO DISC, STRANGE CODES, FREEZING VIDEO, OVERHEATING, AND INCORRECT CLOCK SETTINGS. I SENT IT TO BE FIXED. IT WORKED "OKAY" FOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS, OCCASSIONALLY SHOWING THESE ERRORS. AS OF DECEMBER 2003, IT BEGAN TO BREAK DOWN AGAIN. IT IS NOT WORTH IT TO FIX IT, ESPECIALLY IF THE WARRANTY HAS RUN OUT. I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT. IT'S A PIECE OF JUNK AND SHOULD BE RECALLED!!!!!

Summary: Poor product & poor customer service
Review: I have relied on online reviews for years and have never posted one until now. After my unit broke down, I went to the web to find out if I was the only one experiencing a problem. To my dismay, it appears that I like many, now own a lemon of a DVD recorder. This unit has never been easy to use or intuitive in its operation. Its also very annoying that one can not navigate all functions without the remote control. Now, after less than 7 months(and very little use), it doesn't record or even play brand new DVD's. This is a lemon. Save yourself money and heartburn. Do not buy this product.

Review: I had purchase this DVD recorded last year in 2002 and I only had it the house for about 4 month the most of the time it was in the repair shop ever time I get it back and it still does not work this DVD recorder will eat up and distroy DVD+R and DVD+RW I had lost about 25 disk to this machine the best DVD recorder is Sony

Summary: MINE'S IN THE DUMPSTER IF YOU WANT IT!
Review: LIKE SO MANY OTHERS, I LAID OUT A LOT OF MONEY FOR ONE OF THESE WHEN THEY FIRST CAME TO MARKET. IT WORKED OK FOR A WHILE, BUT THEN (AS SEEMS TO BE THE PATTERN) IT TOOK ON A QUIRKY NATURE THAT CONTINUED TO DETERIORATE UNTIL THE MACHINE BECAME NEXT TO USELESS. MYSTERIOUS "DISC ERRORS" PREVENTED THE PLAYING OF DISCS THAT I KNEW TO BE PERFECTLY GOOD AND IT LOST THE ABILITY TO ERASE DVD-RW. TO SOLVE THESE PROBLEMS I REPLACED THIS PIECE OF JUNK WITH A PANASONIC DMR-E80H. THE PANASONIC IS FAR MORE CAPABLE WHEN IT COMES TO RECORDING DVD, PLUS IT HAS AN80GB HARD DRIVE, ALL FOR HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS LESS. IT IS TOO SOON TO SAY HOW RELIABILITY WILL BE, BUT IT ABSOLUTELY COULD NOT BE ANY WORSE THAN THE FAR MORE EXPENSIVE PHILIPS. SAVE YOUR MONEY!

Summary: Piece of Crap
Review: I bought a Phillips DVDr985 for $999 from a competitor. I planned to use it in my business. After selling the service of making DVDs directly from digital cameras to my clients, the largest client I have asked that I provide the service on one of their largest projects. The very first time I used this machine, I kept getting "disk error". I called Phillips, 5 times, and finally got them to admit that they would send an upgrade disk to me, which means that this thing had problems that they are trying to fix. I told them I needed quicker service because of the client and they told me to download it from the net. I did so, and still received a "disk error". Another call to Phillips...have to send the unit in to get repaired. Call to retailer where purchased...yes you bought our service plan, but will have to send it in to get repaired. The bottom line is that I have to go purchase another DVD recorder while this one, in warranty, is being repaired. Bet you ass I will not buy one from this retailer or anything in the future with the name PHILLIPS on it.
