Summary: Great Film--Deserves More Attention and Respect
Review: This film is lesser known than some of the other Vietnam films
of the 1980's but it deserves a greater amount of respect given
it's quality. The action keeps you interested but the characters
keep you involved in the plot, as you get to know them on a personal level. You'll be pulled in by the struggles of Beanstock, Languilli, and Doc. A great film that deserves more
respect and attention. Highly recommended.

Review: This was probably one of the worst movies I've ever seen. The sight of the box just depresses me. It has almost talked me out of joining the Army.It may be the most realistic Vietnam movie, but the focus of the movie is on all the negative aspects. The troops are a bunch of poor white guys and minorities who are sacrificing their lives to capture a worthless hill, only so the hippies and college kids at home who are too afraid to fight (under the guise of saying it's 'immoral') can spit on them when they return. They deal with racial tensions and friendly fire. What makes it even more senseless is that you never really bond with the characters except to feel sorry for them, partly because you can hardly hear what they're saying. The whole experience of the movie is just depressing. Maybe that was the point. If you're into war movies, this is worth looking into, but otherwise no way.

Summary: RVN VET: Best Vietnam War Movie ever made
Review: From a reality standpoint, this film hits the mark. It is not at all atypical like "Apocalypse Now" (USO Show at night in unsecure area? Give me a break!) or "Platoon" (obsessed with potheads and war lovers). I speak as a veteran of the Vietnam War (May '67 to May '68). The guy who calls this film booring was either in another room or expecting a cartoon. At any rate, he misses the boat or has no experience. The main idea that drove these young soldiers was how to stay alive. The sounds of mortar and artillery explosions used in this picture were the most realistic I have ever heard in any war film. It instantly took me back to 1968 and the nightly mortar attacks we lived through in the central highlands of Vietnam. The characters were entirely believable and diverse. There was conflict between characters as well as conflict on the battlefield. Unfortunately, the film's dipiction of "friendly fire" though tragic was a fact of life at times. And to the guy who says there was no plot: What does he call the all out effort to take that miserable hill day after stinking day? For a typical and realistic rendition of what the war in Vietnam was like, I offer "Hamburger Hill" as the answer.

Summary: Horrible!
Review: This is a sad excuse for a movie. None of the characters are likable. The script is peppered with dialogue that is sometimes inane and always unaffecting. The director managed to make a high-octane and emotional event like the Vietnam war seem completely boring. Any money spent buying this DVD would be better spent on....well anything.

Summary: 2 Movies, the Second is Better
Review: Hamburger Hill, coming out in early 1987, became one of the most tragically fated films in recent memory, in that it came out between two other, high-budgeted, media-pumped Vietnam War films (Platoon and Full Metal Jacket). Despite this ill-fated fact, rendering HH a failure at the box office, the movie remains a wrenching portrayal of the hard times experienced by soldiers in Vietnam. The movie utilizes a relatively unknown cast, which surprisingly seems to work to the film's advantage. The only names that stick out are Dylan McDermott (pre-Practice days) as Sgt. Frantz, a savvy but young vet in his second tour and Don Cheadle (in one of his first motion picture performances.) The film concerns itself primarily with a 10-day trek up a steep hill based on real-life events that happened during the days of major fighting in Vietnam. As in the actual event, the movie ends bleakly, but my uncle (uncaring about the emotional melodrama found in most movies) claims that it is the most accurate war film he's seen to date. This is where the film succeeds in spewing out the idea that all this human sacrifice for a few measly yards of land may not have been worth it. Although this theme seems to pervade through the movie, it does not shame the soldier's efforts in partaking in the war. Rather, it commemorates them, and pities their situation. The movie loses touch with me in that it seems to split, rather than integrate two of the major themes during the Vietnam War; the difficulties associated with basic training and "getting to know one another", and the harshness and inhumanity of war itself. It seems as if director John Irvin felt compelled to present an account of comraderie and training as if it were a mandatory part of any warfilm, and in doing so did a mediocre job. The first 40 minutes is separated as an unneeded and meddled "mini-movie." It is for this reason that I gave the movie 4 stars. Ranking it with other war films of this era, I would put it ahead of Full Metal Jacket, but behind the rest (Platoon, Deer Hunter, Good Morning Vietnam). In the end, it is a good buy for a good price, but not a landmark film.

Summary: A graphic Vietnam movie.
Review: When I saw this movie was made by the Americans, I thought great, they're really going to streatch the truth. But this movie is realistic, graphic and sad. It even shows "friendly fire" when the americans are gunning down their own men from helicopters. They of course don't know who they are shooting. The pleas and cries of the Americans on the ground are not changing anything, as the bullets keep flying. You can really feel the panic. This films action sequences arent very nice [very graphic]. there is also lots of blood. This film also contains many an F-word. There is loads of swearing. I recommend this film to any one that thinks war is glorious and fun. This movie should change their views.

Summary: Gripping portrayal of a hard-fought battle
Review: This movie is a portrayal of a real-life battle for a hill in the Au Shau Valley of Vietnam, in 1969. The soldier's attitudes, dress, gear, and dialogue were very accurate. Everyone's Vietnam experience is different, and just because this movie doesn't mimic 'Platoon' doesn't mean it's not realistic. Different units have different customs, moral, and relations between officers, soldiers, veterans, and newbies. The movie did a good job portraying the psychological stress soldiers faced during the war. Because of the mixed feelings of the Army's drafted recruits, many of them did NOT want to be there, and they did NOT want to fight the war, or die on a hill they were just going to abandon. However, unit pride and espirit de corps were their motivations. These soldiers had a job to do, and they were going to do it, no matter how [fowled] up it was.

Review: I think this is probably the worst Vietnam movie I have seen,but it is not a bad movie!I mean Platoon,Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket were just better movies!But this movie is not that bad,it does not really try to get you emotional are try to be dramatic,it is just a look at Vietnam.I could not believe are soldiers had to fight just to capture a piece of ground!Anyway the acting is good and it is a pretty good movie but I suggest either Platoon,Apocalypse Now or Full Metal Jacket over this movie.(And I'm really 14)

Summary: one of the greatest war depictions ever...
Review: over looked yes... I've seen many war films on WW2 and Vetiam... this is by far one of my personal favorates... despite what some reviews say here this is a realistic and gruesome depiction of what war is... in fact the only films I say even come close or top it would be Saving Privite Ryan (ww2) and Glory(civil war) war isn't ment to be gloryfied the way some try to do, in fact it's a horrable and rather dark time in america's history... granted full metal jacket and Platoon are great films I don't feel that they protray the grim reality of that war the this film does. In fact, it's the only film that's based from a true battle... even Apycoliplise now or Dear Hunter doesn't justify really as much of the true war as this film... I guess I may be one sided on the whole thing but I'll take realism over story any day...

Summary: terrible movie
Review: this movie was horrible. the acting was atrocious. it was too over dramatic - trying to convey something that wasn't there. like, for instance, when Languilli says at the end, "don't forget me." his whole scene was bad, the part was read badly, directed badly, and acted badly. the movie tried too hard to make you feel something for these guys but the problem was that the scenarios didn't have enough time to develop so that you could feel something. overall an absolutely horrible movie.
