Review: My only reservation about reccomending this film would be that there is no prequel for the Fellowship of the Ring! Serious, but suitable for children, engaging and amusing music, it is an enjoyable movie.

Review: I think that this book didnt even come close to being the same realm that the 3 book were in. It should of told a lot more about how they got to the places other then they just appear then. But this is a great movie for its time and you should still buy it. I hope that the new movie being made in the British islands will beter compared to the story.

Review: This movie cracked me up. Songs like "Wheres there a whip, theres a way!" and funny lines from Bilbo Baggins like "bless my soul!" This movie is a crackup! However, despite its stupidity it really does not have the drama and climax that the Hobbitt did (this was the previous movie made by this studio).

Summary: the ending bakshi forgot to film for the lord of the rings
Review: Saw this movie on laserdisc years ago it was also titled "frodo of the nine fingers and the ring of doom". This film pickes up about where the lord of the rings movie by ralph bakshi ended. It tells the rest of the story of ring. This movie was done in the style of the older Rankin Bass carton the hobbit. Using the much simpler animation of the earlier movie makes this one a bit less distracting then the lord of the rings. The complex story of J.r.r. Tolkien was one that was exceptionally difficult for any artist to bring to the screen and it resulted in a fragmented tale this movie "the return of the king" attempted to finish the tale and tie up the story. if you are a tolkien fan whether you love this movie or hate it, I would recommend it just to finish the tale. If you just relax and enjoy the movie its a pretty good tale. It also has a few interesting songs in it like "where there's a whip there's a way"

Summary: A great story, even if not for Tolkien zelots...
Review: I first saw "Return of the King" when it was originally aired on TV. I must have been about 12 at the time. Having loved "The Hobbit", I was enthralled. Despite it's slight departure from the novel, this animated film is VERY well done, especially from a child's point of view (This "child" is now 30 and still loves it!). All the reviews that tear it apart are adults that have read the books and expected this children's movie to be faithful to it... Ahem... You'd need a six hour movie to do that, plus enough elven names to completely confuse you! I still get shivers when I watch the part where Eowen avenges her lord, Theoden. I think the animation far surpassed that of Bashiki's Lord of the Rings, which made the Hobbits (especially Sam) into very ugly, bumbling creatures, and gives a very detailed glimpse of what Tolkien may have had in mind when writing his books. Thumbs up!

Review: The bad:

No Gimli or Legolas. Merry and Pippen look goofy. The Lord of the Nazgul has the voice of a sissy. Only a cameo for Aragorn

The good .


It does a very good job capturing Sam and Frodo's journey through Mordor in Book VI of Lord of the Rings/ Return of the King, IMHO this was done here even better than it was in the Peter Jackson movie. This is what makes this animated version worth seeing. It also covers some parts of the story that were not in the Peter Jackson film. Like Sam being tempted by the one ring and the one ring's power to cause fear to an enemy . John Huston is terrific as the voice of Gandalf. Roddy McDowell does a great Sam and Orson Bean is great as Frodo. The songs by Glen Yarborough work very well with the story. This version got good reviews when it first came out in the early 80's. and it is still worth seeing.

The best way to look at this version is not to dwell on its shortcomings but on what the film got right. And it got a lot right. Overall the cartoon is reasonably entertaining and if you are a Tolken fan then you ought to take a look at this underrated version.

Summary: The Return of the King
Review: I have fond memories of this movie as a child. Upon watching it again as an adult I can see I was watching this through some very heavily tinted rose colored glasses.

The animation is passable - certainlylacking by today's standards but the part that will test your mettle will be the singing. Wow. Just wow. It's really bad, I don't remember it being this bad as a kid but if you can stomach the singing you can be treated to certain plot lines and elements missing from the far far superior Jackson film including the ending that Tolkien had in his book with Gollum dancing off the cliff.

If you saw this as a child I encourage you to watch it again. Otherwise stick to Jackson's version. You'll be a lot happier and your ears will not be marred by such danceable hits as "The Ring of Doom." and "Frodo of the Nine Fingers."

Summary: So absolutely terrible it's funny
Review: Watching this movie is the most fun I've ever had in my ilfe. It is absolutely the worst movie that has ever been made, and it's so so funny to see how STUPID they made this. You can tell straight from the beginning. Just listen to that guy's voice. You know, the guy with so much vibrato you can't tell which one of the 10 notes he's actually trying to sing. I was rolling on the ground in hysterics when I heard his singing voice.

And don't get me started on Frodo's and Sam's dreams. These were the two funniest scenes EVER made in the history of the world. I was laughing harder at Frodo's dream than I did at Young Frankenstein! It was truly hysterical.

Buy this because it's funny. Compare it to the Peter Jackson version, and it's even funnier. I could hardly breathe, I was laughing so hard through this whole thing. But don't expect a good movie. The songs are horrible, the voice acting terrible, the animation awful. IT IS THE WORST AND THE FUNNIEST MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN! GO OUT AND BUY IT! OR SOMETHING!

Summary: Uneven and Bloodless.
Review: I cannot give much of a recommendation for this film. It's hard to believe that the same creative team who made The Hobbit followed it up with this lackluster offering. All the joy and art of Bilbo's tale is absent from this work. The musical accompaniment is dry and forgettable. Even in retrospect, The Return of the King remains a disappointment.

Admittedly, depicting a story of such complexity in ninety minutes would be a daunting task for anyone but what is offered here is a hurried and passionless summary. The adapters attempt to cover way, way, way too much material for the format selected. Alas, when someone tries to cover everything they often manage to cover nothing. I love Tolkien and I love this story but you'd be better off leaving this one unbought in the warehouse.

Summary: A conclusion to the animated series
Review: I'm being kind by giving this animated film a 3 stars. Originally broadcast on television, this film was an attempt to wrap up the animated series after the creator of the Lord of the Rings movie passed away, leaving the project open. Rankin, who created the Hobbit film, was brought in to produce this film with his cartoonish representation of the characters.

The story is changed around a little, as is usually done for a TV version, and has "the" worst song throughout about "Frodo Of the Nine Fingers, and the Ring of Doom" which borders on ridiculous. They brought in some annoying 70's folk singers, apparently.

Its fun to watch because we all love the story, but as a film it borders on painful.
