Summary: MP3 interface
Review: I bought this player for its MP3 playing abilities, and was a little disappointed. Yes it plays MP3's, but it skips VERY frequently. I also thought the onscreen interface for selecting songs could use a lot of work, as it only allows you to see the first 6 characters of the filename. ID3 tag support would be very benificial. No doubt this will be available in the future with many other functions, but until then, if you dont HAVE to have it, I'd suggest waiting for something more user friendly.

Summary: Gladiator test
Review: I bought this player for my wife as a Christmas gift. We watched Gladiator - after about an hour into the flick - I noticed minor freezing of images. I then tried another music video DVD with about 45 clips on it. Althought the catalog showed all, only the first 21 videos played. When I tried to access the others via the menu - it locked up. I've read a lot about this model and my opinion - 50/50 - maybe you'll get the better half.

Summary: Terrible piece of equiptment...
Review: I certainly wished I had read reviews of this DVD player before I purchased it. DO NOT BUY!!! The first one I purchased didn't work at all (no vertical hold), returned it and tryed another of the same model (711). Have played 7 DVD's in it. All 7 DVD's have skipped or frozen in this machine at some point of the disc. Do not waste your time on this model. From reading other reviews, most Samsung models have the same problem as this one. Purchased a Toshiba 1600 and have had ZERO problems. Why Samsung is selling these things is a mystery to me.

Summary: Service
Review: I had a problem with the player reading our DVD's. I looked through my manual for troubleshooting and it gave you a very generic and simple (3) problems/solutions (i.e. make sure it's turned on...) There was no phone number in the manual for service type questions. The only number listed was that for a warranty. I then went on Samsung's webpage and it was difficult to navigate through their page. That was equally as frustrating. I eventually returned the player and purchased a Sony.

I realize that the problem may have been with the individual player and not an inherent problem in all samsung's. But I mainly wanted to voice my displeasure with the lack of service and alert people to this fact.

If I had been able to get some answers (whether I liked them or not) I would most likely have exchanged the DVD rather than return it for a different brand.

Summary: Excellent DVD/CD Player
Review: I have now watched 4 movies on this player, I got it on Christmas Day. It played all 4 perfectly. I had read the problems about the playing of MP3's on it, but it played the ones I burned on an Imation CD-R just fine. Excellent DVD/CD Player and mp3 player for me, highly recommended.

Summary: Buyer Beware!!!!!
Review: I have the misfortune of owning this machine, and I'm sorry I do. It has not, can not and will not play a DVD without skipping and freezing. Heaven forbid you buy a dual encoded DVD, because, more than likely, it will overheat and not work at all.

Don't be like me and cheap out. Spend the extra cash for a better model.

Summary: Great Player for the price
Review: I purchased the Samsung DVD711 DVD player exactly One Year Ago, and I have had no problems, with skipping, with dirty discs not playing, with it reading CD-R's, CD-RW's and MP3's (even though the book says it can't).

I currently own about 40 DVD's myself and my father owns around 200, and ALL, I repeat ALL of them, from the Matrix, to Gladiator, to X-Men work wonderfully. I am using the S-Video connection and regular RCA left and right channel audio to a Toshiba 27 inch TV.

The features on it are incredible, the screen saver is excellent for projection screens so that you don't burn the screen, the zoom feature works great and so do all of the other features.

I did experience a problem with skipping, and not playing 2 Layer DVD's, about 6 months ago, but the problem was easily solved when I change the internal setting of the view from Letterbox to 4:3 Pan and Scan. This only stopped the player from also adding a black bar on the top and bottom, it still played Wide screen DVD's in wide screen. I figured out that that feature takes much out of the system when using Dual layered DVD's and isn't needed when watching movies that are already in wide screen format, but works great on the ones that are only Pan and Scan.

But as the saying goes there is always on orange in a basket of lemons. All I can tell you is that my Samsung DVD711 works great. Yet if you want a great dvd player and you own an Xbox, spend the money for the DVD Kit and you will get a great Progressive scan DVD player, which does almost everything the Samsung DVD711 does, plus more.

Summary: So Sad
Review: I purchased this player with the hopes that it would be a quality unit. I had never purchased a Samsung product before. My DVD-711 had problems right out of the box. The first movie I played froze in several places during playback. The frame would stop for a moment, and then continue. The second DVD I played was a brand new out of the box concert video. After about and hour into the concert, my Samsung simply froze up. The screen was all streaked and the sound was stuttering. When I hit play, it corrected itself, but the sound was no longer in synch with the singer. I returned it to Amazon.com as a defective unit.

Summary: Great Product!
Review: I received this DVD player as a Christmas gift in Decemeber of 2000. It has worked almost flawlessly since, and I only had one DVD not work with it (Moulin Rouge), but I returned it and got another copy that did work, so I guess it really wasn't the player.

I am a huge fan of Samsung's remote control which has a little joystick--its a lot of fun to play with. Unlike Sony players, Samsung's fast-forward and reverse give you much more control (up to 32x) and actually tell you the speed (not just FF). The jog dial on the unit is also a nice touch, but I wish it could go frame-by-frame in reverse. The preouts (DTS and DD) are very clean sounding and will certainly suit the audiophile. The 3d sound is also very good. I already had a 5.1 speaker set up, but the 3d sounds adds another dimension of ambience and warmth. After reading a review on this very page, I learned that the Samsung was MP3 audio compatible despite the information on this site and the Samsung manual. After trying it for myself, I was impressed, although it can only play 100 tracks, which is still very good (especially for a player thats 1.5 years old).

The picture is just as good as the sound. I am using component video on my 32" flat-screen and the quality is superb--much better than the Apex models.

Summary: Christmas disapointment
Review: I received this DVD player for Christmas. It was fairly easy to set up. It played our first DVD perfectly. We then rented a DVD and noticed that the movie kept freezing up. We thought we had a bad DVD. It played several movies just fine, but it seems the more I used the player the more frequently the problems happened. It will not even play most of my music CD's. I have returned the player to Best Buy where we purchased it and I will now buy the Toshiba that most of the Amazon customers are recommening.
