Summary: DVD Player Freezes, Won't Read Discs w/o Restarting
Review: I promised myself I'd wait at least a year to post a review of this, in order to make sure that I'd given myself plenty of time to test it out. Well, it's been a year, and I have made a note to myself to never buy a Konka product again.

When I put a disc into the player, 90-95% of the time the player pauses for about 20 seconds and then displays "Invalid Operation," and I have to turn it off (at the box, because although the remote will turn off the box, it will not let you turn it back on). I must then wait a few seconds and then turn it back on before it will read the disc.

I've gotten used to that particular bug, but there's a worse one: if I have the bad timing to change my TV's volume or input selection (I have a ... Panasonic Tau TV set) while the disc is in transition, the image freezes, and the only way to get the disc to work again is by turning off the box as in the example above.

The remote is as slow as the most negative reviewers here have indicated. If you are at all used to being able to brush your thumb quickly across a pad of remote buttons to direct your appliance accordingly, you must stop that with the Konka player. Each request you send via remote must be entered discretely, and you must wait (sometimes up to 5 seconds) for it to register before you can press another button on the remote.

The only good news is that the image quality and sound reproduction are fine, at least to this non-a/v-expert. But I've had consistent difficulties with the actual player since the first hour I pulled it excitedly out of the box and hooked it up to my TV, to the point that I'm actively looking--after only one year of owning this--for a new, better brand of player.

Summary: Regarding "motor" noise
Review: I ran into that problem with a few rented movies or discs that I had watched a lot. The problem goes away after you wash the DVD with some dish soap and water.
I've had my unit since March(?) still works fine. It even played a damaged DVD that I had to repair.
Tough luck this things are out of stock, becuase they really are quite good for how much they cost.

Summary: Excellent customer service
Review: I bought a Konka KD1800U and it worked every bit as well as a Sony costing four times as much. When I'd had it for five months it abruptly quit sending out a video signal. I called Konka USA at the 800 number provided and got a real human with just a single menu selection. I was two months past the unlimited warranty limit and into the limited warranty period, meaning that they would provide replacement parts but I would be responsible for labor. What actually happened was this: they told me to return the defective unit to them and they would send me a brand new unit for free. In under two weeks they kept their promise (despite potential shipping delays due to the terrorist bombings and the absence of air shipments).

It just doesn't get any better than that --- I'll certainly buy Konka products again!

Summary: Couldn't ask for more
Review: I lucked out on a really good deal. Not only is this konka dvd player inexpensive, it's attractive, and it runs better than any other dvd player I've seen out there. I've seen other players freeze and I don't have that problem at all. The picture is just gorgeous! I can't say enough about how much I have enjoyed having it. Customer service was great too. I have an old tv and they helped me through the hook up. They were friendly and helpful. If you're looking to upgrade from VHS to DVD, I would recommend looking at Konka. I feel like I got a great deal.

Summary: GREAT!
Review: I must admit, I waited a while to write this review. When I saw some reviews that named problems with this player, I thought that I had better wait a while before giving it a glowing review (then to have it break the next morning.) It's been a little over a month now, and I must say the Konka KD1800U1 is a wonderful piece of machinery. It's setup was practivally idiot-prof (plug three wires into the front/back of TV, whatever the case may be.)I have run into the lock-up problem, but I'm resonably sure that was my fault. (I was tinkering with the VCR at the time. It began playing while I had my Gladiator DVD going.) The picture quality is vastly superior to my newest and best VCR.

Other items to note: Konka has re-arranged the remote. It is much more sensibly laid out now.

Despite what the editorial review says, the 1800U1 does have DTS decoding.

All in all, this DVD player is absolutely wonderful! The build quality and price are two reasons you really should buy this if you're looking for a budget DVD player.

Summary: Check Merchandise before shipping
Review: I was very excited to recieve my new sleek looking bargain priced DVD player. But I soon learned that you get what you pay for. When I put a DVD in all the player does is make a scrapeing sound then say there is "No CD" in the drive or "Invalid". Then my Dvd comes out with scratches on it. The unit appears to be in mint condition, no signs of damage on the boxes it came (it came in two boxes). Sorry I oredered it. I lost my money.

Summary: The company
Review: Konka is the biggest TV manufactuer in China(One of the bigger DVD makers too). China as the biggest TV market(and one of the biggest electronic market) in the world is also the most competitive market with all the Japanese and domestic companies fighting over it. Konka made their name in China with quality and price, winning customers back from Sony and Panasonic and Toshiba and JVC, going from a tiny outfit ten years ago to one of the biggest company in China, and now they are in the US! It's a exciting fresh force in the US electronic landscape. But because of its novelty, and lack of promotion, not much American people know it. But trust me, they sell tens of millions of TV sets(and other electronics) in China every year, they are famous and big, and they can be trusted.

Summary: It Is Worth the Money!!!
Review: I am not a huge electronics freak so this was a great puchase for me...my first DVD player and what a good looking bargain! I don't care about a fancy remote because all of my other remotes are not backlit, and I have the intelligence to memorize button locations after a few runs. As for drive noise well... I will admit about 15 percent of the time the drive will act up and a bit of noise, but again I am intelligent enough to block it out and turn up my stereo speakers. It plays movies as well as any brand I have seen and sounds as equal. The fancy rear connections that may be missing do not mean much to me right now, but hell I have other things to worry about in life than the best of the best DVD players, when in my mind I have exactly what I need...a superior affordable Konka! Buy it Today!

Summary: WOW! I LOVE IT!!!!
Review: About a month ago, I ordered this player from Amazon.com. It arrived much faster than I expected it to, and it was SUPERBLY packaged for the safety of the unit by Amazon.com. I was EXTREMELY SATISFIED with the transaction. Now, concerning the unit . . . it was super SUPER easy to install, in less than 5 minutes, I had the whole deal up and running, playing full DTS audio surround sound through my sound system. I have been enjoying crystal-clear images, full theatrical surround sound, and an extreme ease of use (and I didn't even read the instructions!) It is super easy to figure out! I now only wish that I had purchased this unit sooner! It just so happens that a local dealer in my area carries this particular unit, so I went over to the shop and checked it out before I ordered from Amazon.com. At the local store, they were asking full price $229.00 PLUS 6% State Sales Tax. By purchasing this unit through Amazon.com, I saved nearly $80.00!!! This is a great price for a terrific unit, and Amazon.com delivers the goods in a prompt, efficient manner. Do business here with confidence--they'll treat you right! I was curious to read of the troubles of another buyer . . . I would say to any who read his recommendation, that he must have either received a defective unit, or has installed it incorrectly. I haven't had any of the problems he describes! I have only enjoyed one exciting moment after another with my new DVD player!

Summary: Best money you'll ever spend
Review: Not a day goes by when I'm not more amazed and impressed with this inexpensive unit. Not only does it do DVD, but it also does VCD and SVCD! Best of all it'll even play video files on CDR AND CDRW that I make myself using my PC and cd burner. I can edit a file from my DV cam in Premiere, dump it to an SVCD compatible file, and watch my creations with little loss in quality.
