Rating: Summary: What's the problem? Review: The drive was silent for me, something I'd worried about, based on reviews. It seems this is a random fault, as I had no trouble with that. Even running the picture through a newer VCR since my older TV has no RCA-video imputs, the picture was undistorted and crystal clear. In fact, the VCR just must pass on the data to the TV, because it was MUCH clearer than any VHS tape, even better than the local (admittedly cruddy) cable. The remote resonded quickly for me, however I see where the complaints come in. It is a sensitive remote, so if you press a button twice by accident, it will lock up and give the errors other people have mentioned. You quickly get used to this. Multiple RCA-type outputs allowed me to intergrate the Konka KD1800U1 into my mini-home theater system with ease. I have only two complaints: 1) That it takes just under ten seconds to reconize a DVD after first being put in 2) That I had to wait until Christmas to enjoy this electronics masterpiece.I would recommend this player to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Worst Purchase Ever Made Review: I'm rather serious when I say this is possibly the worst purchase I ever transacted. Every other dvd player I've come in contact with has far surpassed this ... machine, which has given me three-something years of agony and rage. Its response from the remote control is relatively long, it freezes up on some of my dvd's, screws up on reading the disc if I use fast foward or rewind, and is incredibly slow. When I first bough this, I wasn't expecting anything great, but at the same time, I did not expect for it to be of such low quality. I give Konka the Black Mark when it comes to this product.
Rating: Summary: Good looking Great color, sound, and overall quality Review: I first saw this unit in a local electronic store last year. The elegant face panel caught my attention immediately. Now I have been using this player for about 1 week. I am very satisfied with this purchase so far. The installation was easy. It took me about 3-5 minutes to connect the cable and power. I tried DVD, CD, VCD, CDR and they all played flawlessly. The color and sound of this player are excellent (It beats my friend's much more expensive DVD player from a well-known brand). The remote control is also silver color and looks very cute. I did not experience any slowness that was mentioned by several other reviewers. Like a previous reviewer, I also think that the slowness of some remote controls might be caused by weak batterys. I had similar problem with my TV remote control before. After replacing battery, the problem was gone. All in all, I feel this is a high-quality product at bargain price. I will give Konka serious consideration in my next home electronics purchase.
Rating: Summary: So far so good! Review: I was very nervous about buying a lower priced DVD player by a company I'd never heard of before and was SURE that some sort of problem was inevitable. Not at all! I've only been using it for a little over 2 weeks but so far it's been easy to use (VERY important to me!), easy to hook up, solid, w/ nice picture quality. No problems at all, yet. Very pleased. Contrary to some of the other reviews I've read, I don't find the remote to be terribly slow. In fact, I find the control buttons to be well distributed and easy to use. The less glancing down the better for me! So far I'm really quite pleased with the unit. I didn't want anything fancy, I just wanted it to work well and this really does. Hope this helps someone else. There were only two reviews when I bought mine and I was definitely second-guessing my choice at the time but for those considering the Konka, I've had a VERY nice experience.
Rating: Summary: Great product for the price... Review: I did a fair amount of research when I decided to enter into the DVD world. Based on my audio reciever's capacity (doesn't support Dolby Digital, for example), I opted for a player without all the bells and whistles--I'll get one of those players when I upgrade my TV and stereo a couple of years from now. In the $200 to $300 price range, I was dizzy with all the choices. I liked the Toshiba 3109, but I kept coming back to the Konka KD-1800U. I had found so many complementary reviews (both editorial and customer) about the Konka, but I was wary because the brand was pretty unknown to me. I am glad I took the chance, though, as my first viewing with the Konka was fantastic. I should explain, though: I had ordered the KD-1800 and Amazon shipped me the KD-1800U1. I had seen a couple of mentions about this model in reviews, but didn't know that much more about it. There are some differences, including no coaxial out (despite what the description says) and support of Dolby Theater (DTS) (though the KD 1800U did support DTS, even though it didn't say it anywhere). I was pretty confused when I recieved this player, as I didn't know that much about it. The www.konkausa.com site said nothing about this new model. Amazon didn't have any info about it. I eventually got through to a very knowledgable guy at Konka who explained that the KD-1800U1 is the new/replacement model for the KD-1800U, which was discontinued a couple of months ago. It seems that the geographical zones that the KD-1800 was set up for barred it from being used in Asia and Mexico, so this 1800U1 is for North America (zone 1). With this update, they also put in some extras, like another set of A/V OUT jacks (for example, to hook through a VCR, though I loathe to think what a taped DVD would look like). All in all, the Konka rep convinced me that this was indeed a better model than the 1800U for the same low, low price of under $200. Now, for the test: I hooked everything up with my jury-rigged home theater system (I'm a scrapyard wannabe-audiophile) and my workhorse 27" TV. My first test run was with Fight Club, and the opening credits, with the camera running along a tangled network of neurons and synapses, really looked amazing. Even my friend, who isn't too discriminating when it comes to fuzzy pictures and poor-quality video, was amazed at the resolution of the picture. The sound (during the THX "volume swell") was super crisp and sounded great, even through my hodge-podge of varied-quality speakers. Suffice to say, the movie looked and sounded great and made me realize what a great technology DVD is. After that, we had to take the Matrix for a test run, and skipping through the chapters was a breeze...again, everything looked wonderful. My only complaint is that the remote, which is layed out pretty terribly with tiny buttons and no backlight (which I'd expect with a player of this price), is PAINFULLY SLOW. Not that big a deal and I'm sure I'll get used to it, but still a drawback. If you get impatient easily, you might think about plunking down the extra money for a more responsive player, but I hardly think it will make me (who is admittedly impatient), too antsy. For the value, the options and the quality--both audio and video--the Konka 1800U1 is a fantastic entrance into the world of DVD. I highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: Does not play DVDs Review: It will not play DVDs. On 3 separate occasions, a rented DVD was put in, and it gave some error code. After an hour or so it might play the movie. Uhhh, just a thought here, but shouldn't a DVD player play DVD's? Sorry for the sacasm, but it seems that the quality of everything is pathetic in general and has been getting worse over the past few years. This is just one more thing that is not some unknown technology, (DVD players have been common for years now), and it simply has no excuse for not working other than shoddy engineering / assembly or perhaps both.
Rating: Summary: Looking for a quality machine? Not this one! Review: I had high hopes for this machine, but it locks up during EVERY movie we watch. It's O.K. for a CD player, but it's been a total disappointment for watching DVDs. When we bought the player, the Matrix was the movie to test the player, specifically the elevator scene--no problem there, but on Disney's The Emperor's New Groove, it locks up every time! It locks up on dialogue scenes, too! The nice appearance is totally negated by its lack of performace. Forget all the features most DVDs have--the player will lock up and you'll have to power down, wait for about 2 minutes, turn it on again, and cross your fingers that this time you'll be able to finish the movie! The "POP" it makes through my amp when I turn it on is so loud that we jump every time. What a piece of junk!
Rating: Summary: problem dvd player Review: I had bought this gift for my brother and his family for the holiday's of 2000. I had to buy another one to replace this one. The dvd skips on brand new dvd's, freeze's up and eject's when playing. It started just as they pluged it in. Problem's from the beginning. I would never buy a konika product ever again for if their products are like this who would ever want a problem. Plus no one in the metro New York area has ever heard of this company. Not any of the electronic appliance store's and mega electronic stores.
Rating: Summary: Great Player for the Money Review: I got this DVD player 1 year ago for Christmas. I had researched for 2 months.. what DVD player I wanted to get. I wanted the best for the money. Without spending alot. I decided on this dvd player and mentioned it to my wife. Then for Christmas she gave it to me. I've had a couple problems.. as has been mentioned before. Slow remote responses... picture freezing when I turn the volume up on my received (perhaps another remote related problem).. But all in all. I love this DVD player. The styling of it is amazing. I love the look of it. I just bought a new silver TV and it looks great with the dvd player. Sound and picture reproduction is perfect. I havn't had a problem with the loudness of the drive mechanism. I do wish it had component video out.. but S-Video works great. One year ago.. I'd recommend this player to anyone. It was the best for the money. But now.. there are lot's of DVD players in this price range. So I'd do a little research first. But if you do get this unit... you'll be pleased with it.
