Summary: RCA RC5220P as compares...rocks!
Review: I have owned my RCA for just over a year and have never had a problem...in fact I've compared picture and sound quality of many other dvd players with mine, and my RCA always wins.

CRYSTAL CLEAR!

And the price is sweet too.

Summary: You get what you pay for
Review: With a low budget to start with, I wanted a reliable DVD player that would also play my CD's. I researched several on line and in stores and finally decided upon the RCA5220P model .... Not owning any DVD discs, I rented several from Blockbuster Video and much to my dissapointment, the discs were not compatible. My Staurday night was very much a no go because of this. However, RCA hotline walked me through the process of re-setting the unit which corrected the problem. I was excited the start to watch my movies only to find out that each movie I put in, every so often, the picture would freeze. When it returned, it would skip over several scenes. This totally annoyed me but again RCA sent me a disc cleaner, it seems to be working but should further problems continue the item will be returned to Amazon. I would nto recommend this product, spend a little more money and get a better model.

Summary: Great Customer Service, but a cheapo DVD Player
Review: I bought the last version of this player, and it works fairly well. I had it for about 8 mos, and it broke, but when I called for service, they cross-shipped me a refurb one, and I used the same box and sent the old one back. No hassles. It's a cheapie dvd player though, My panasonic has more features. This RCA one pauses a while between layers, and sometimes I get those squares on the screen like the video can't keep up.

Summary: It Just DIED
Review: Received this DVD Player as a gift and it worked pretty good for about a year. Inserted a DVD last week and it just died. Took it to an RCA certified repair shop for repair and was told that when they called RCA for schematic info they were told not to attempt repair. Repairman said he was given a 1-800 number for me to call and for an outrageous amount of $$ I could send it to RCA for repair/replacement. What a great service policy.

Summary: Ignore the price drops - it is still a piece of junk.
Review: Trust me, Amazon could lower the price of this even further, but even if all you pay is shipping you are still not getting a bargain.

I owned this unit for one month, after which it would never play any DVDs. It only showed the NO DISK message. For some reason, I chose to ignore the other reviewers before me who warned of the same problem. I figured, I am a smart technical guy, so it should work for me. Wrong!

The price has gone down about 50% since the time that I purchased this unit, but it is still not worth risking it. As other reviewers have mentioned, the phone/web/email support provide by RCA is worthless. However, I would like to take a moment to recognize the return department at Amazon, who were kind enough to let me return the item without the original packaging. They get 5 stars. The DVD unit however only get's 1 star. I would have given less than one star, but that doesn't seem to be possible.

I have no personal grievance against RCA - in fact I have onwned some great RCA VCRs in the past. But this unit is so full of bugs that Amazon should just cut it's losses (and avoid further reputation risk) by returning this entire lot to RCA.

Summary: DO NOT BUY!
Review: I've had the displeasure of owning two RCA brand DVD players and neither one made it more than a year before breaking. I had this DVD player and a Proscan DVD/DIVX (which the salesman at [...] SWORE was the best that money could buy). The RCA DVD just quit working entirely after 11 months (microprocesor). My [$] Proscan DVD player now displays a "NO DISC" message seemingly at random, and for no particular reason. Sometimes you can put a disc in and it will play the first time, others you have to try it a few times, and on the worst days you may have to try 15-20 times and it still may not work.

In both cases I called RCA, sat on hold for some ridiculous amount of time, spoke to someone in technical support who knew nothing about technical support, and was ultimately told it would cost more to repair than to replace.

RCA's warranty is useless, their technical support line is an exercise in futility, and I personally don't think it's worth the money to repair any of their poorly engineered products. I've learned my lesson with RCA and will specifically avoid their products in the future.

Summary: Glad I WON it for I'd NEVER buy it!
Review: Had no problems for the first few months and then in the middle of a movie, it stopped cold and reverted to the startup screen and acted as if I had just inserted the DVD. Had the same problem with a few DVD's but lately, they have played ok. BIGGEST problem has been starting with the first 'stopping', I now have a scratchy sound coming from within during the playing of a DVD. There when powering up, after retracting the tray when empty and throughout the entire playing of the DVD. Not as loud now but still there so never made it a priority in getting fixed. Contacted RCA ...and since I'm nearing a year now, I'd have to pay for repair or replacement...And to add insult to injury, their offering me a 'Service Contract'... Was considering it until reviewing...comments so I could get it fixed or replaced but not now for I don't want to get the 'problems' I've reviewed...

I'd be royally ticked off now if I had bought this player but since I won it, I'll just use it until it dies and replace it. Provided I don't replace it first.

Summary: Believe the reviews - DO NOT BUY THIS
Review: For some reason I read the reviews, and chose to believe the good ones and not the bad.

This unit has played 3 DVDs for me. Now however, every DVD gives a NODISK error on the main screen. I already through away all the packing so I can't send it back, and you see the difficulty that people have had with RCA.

DO NOT BUY THIS.

Summary: Great Deal
Review: I've had my player for a year and a half with not one problem (knock on wood). It has played every disc that I have inserted with fantastic quality, including NetFlix rents. My friend has said that he see's a difference in quality of picture in comparison to his $300+ Sony, but I think it is a bias to his "more expensive brand". My friend has a new TV with digital comb filters and I think that's where he see's the difference. Their may be a slight, and I do mean slight, difference in the black levels, but it's nothing to really notice.

I only have one gripe as with most people here who likes this player. It wont play VCD's or CDR's.

This player may not be for the serious videophile but it is a great bargain for the casual viewer to the moderate home theater viewer (that would be me, ie. Dolby prologic w/ Bose Acoustamass 10 non powered sub w/ a 32" Rca standard, lame eh!.

I recomend mine.
