Description:

Panasonic's feature-packed DVD-K510 DVD-Video player is a wonder of modern digital engineering and a must for any karaoke enthusiast. If you're not a Carpenters or Michael Jackson wannabe, however, you'll have to think carefully about this purchase. While the DVD-K510 has an S-Video output and two composite-video connectors, it does not have component video outputs for a higher-quality picture through a compatible monitor--something most DVD players in this price range offer. Clearly, what you're paying for here is the karaoke setup--but what a setup it is!

The DVD-K510 features full-blooded Dolby Digital karaoke, which comes with Virtual Duet, Guide Melody on/off, two front-panel microphone inputs with independent level controls, echo-level control, voice changer, and--the best part--13-step digital key control, which lets you transpose the key without altering the tempo. Another excellent feature is that the unit doesn't restrict you to just playing karaoke discs. The front-panel "mic control" input to coordinate start cues is also convenient.

The more traditional DVD functions are also here: Chapter/track skip and search, slow motion, still-frame, frame-advance, auto power-off, Resume Play, as well as less-common capabilities like a favorites-oriented marker function, scrolling text display, virtual surround sound (designed for spacious two-channel sound), and the inclusion of a shuttle wheel for hands-on searching.

In keeping with the DVD-K510's karaoke bent, the player's audio performance is very good, offering state-of-the-art 24-bit/96kHz digital-to-analog decoding through the RCA analog outputs.

Pros:

  • Dolby Digital and DTS outputs
  • Extensive front-panel controls
  • Multiple video outputs
  • Comprehensive karaoke features

Cons:

  • No component video output
  • No coaxial audio output
