Summary: So Far, So Good...NOT
Review: I bought two-one for my bedroom and one for my classroom. I like the zoom features on the Toshiba as well as the ability to speed up, choose whether you want to see the DVD in widescreen or regular format (if the DVD supports it), and the remote control is very thorough. You can also set what type of sound you want (and I don't mean languages) as well as the picture mode (animation, movie, etc...). The one complaint I have is I can't save a spot in the memory unless the movie is not playing.

I'm editing my rating. One of the two has quit working. The sound ceased to work on the one at work. For no reason. Right now it's a very big paperweight. Avoid Toshiba. The other one seems OK but for it to die in the amount of time it did, that makes me one very unhappy camper. Go for another brand and save your money.

Yet another edit...the second one has bit the dust too. And, ironically, the sound was the primary problem. I like Toshiba but I had two die and a friend had one die. Maybe they just aren't meant to make good DVD players.

Summary: Good high quality basic DVD player
Review: I selected the Toshiba because it had a few extra features like zoom that the Panasonic brands lacked. I didn't know if zoom would be useful but I figured it was a good feature to have. Now I'm glad the Toshiba has zoom capability. It allows me to enlarge the picture area from wide screen to full frame or near full frame on a standard 4:3 TV. Of course the picture sides get cut off but that's not a big problem for me. Karaoke and listening to CD's are not important to me.

That said, Hannibal froze up on me badly in many places. There was one spot I could not get passed unless I directly went to a second past the freeze spot. It must have froze up 10 times while watching it. The DVD was a rental but it played fine on my PC's DVD player.

Another reason I selected the Toshiba was the 10 free rental DVD's from Hollywood video. ... Go to toshiba's web site and search for the offer.

Summary: Your basic DVD player...
Review: I didn't want a DVD player to double as a CD player, or to hold up to 5 DVD's... the single tray here is fine, after all, I watch one movie at a time. I just wanted your basic DVD player with the standard features. This SD1700 by Toshiba delivers excellent picture quality (500 lines of resolution). Standard features like the necessary S-Video output, Dolby Digital and DTS output and various special effects... Zoom (up to 4x), slow motion, multi-language capability (if available on the DVD), and 3 speeds of fast forward & reverse (2x, 8x, 30x). The only special effect I personally haven't been able to use is the "multi camera angle"... I have about 50 DVD's and none of them offer this multi angle. The Toshiba is a sleek black box and the remote is easy to use with the push buttons well positioned. If you're looking for a basic unit to play your DVD's on - this is the one. Great player for the price.

Summary: New Toy
Review: We purchased a Toshiba 1700 as our first DVD player. I spent a lot of time researching different models learning what you need and don't need. I was well aware of the freezing up that a lot of people talk about. But even knowing that I was unprepared when it actually happened. It happened to us while watching both "The Cell" and "Act of War". In Act of War it frozen about 4 times in one certain frame but always unfroze itself. In The Cell there was one part of a scene that we could not get past. I was able to frame past that part and then rewind up until just a hair after the point where it kept locking up. Keep in mind that these two movies were rentals. We have watched countless other movies, both rentals and movies we have purchased and not had a problem.

But for the small freezing problems I would never give away my DVD player. The picture is unsurpassed by TV or VHS. (If you have a TV that is only 1 to 2 years old). As far as sound, we have a BOSE surround sound system with a Panasonic Digital Receiver which make the movies come alive.

Remember here the DVD technology is still in its infancy!!! Don't spend all kinds of money. They will only get better!!!

Do I think this is a good buy? Definitely!!!

Summary: Best bang for the buck
Review: I bought this DVD player for my father as a replacment for the really bad Phillips model I got him for father's day. He has had it for about a month now and it has not skipped once. He has watched "The Art of War" "Rules of engagement" "Hollow Man" as well as many other movies. Overall a great player.

Summary: Toshiba 1700 vs 1600
Review: Received 1600 for Christmas,2000 after reading customer reviews on Amazon.com. One reviewer, with a multidisc player, purchased 1600 for a second room because it was relatively inexpensive. It quickly developed that the 1600 became the DVD player of choice, despite the single disc. We are now looking for DVD player as a family present and did not know about 1700 (they do look alike). The 1600 is an excellent simple to operate machine. Based on the posted review comparing 1600 and 1700 will go for 1600 again. Simple is better. Many excellent reviews for 1700 but also those where the luck of the draw was a defective machine. 1600 price is a bit higher but that's my final answer. DVD is an excellent format that yields "film" quality movie viewing(from Gladiator, 2000 to The Great Waldo Pepper, 1975). Hope the Matrix works as well on the 1600 as the 1700 because this present goes to a 30 something household. Five stars for 1600, the reader will need to look to others for the 1700.

Summary: beware of toshiba
Review: Word of caution about Toshiba quality: I have a Toshiba SD3109 dual-disk dvd player; bought new mid-1999. Used it for 1 month, then it sat for 18 months in a closet, UNUSED, while I was on an assignment. When I got back, I got 4 more months of use - then it quit reading disks (repairman says the laser pickup failed). Of course now, warranty is long gone (even with extended warranty due to purchase with visa card - still have to pay $90 for labor; parts are another $95 that visa will pay). Rather disappointed unit only provided 5 months use. Reading other reviews at various on-line sites, other owners have also complained about Toshiba quality. Now looking for my next dvd player; I'll keep looking, excluding Toshiba. If you do buy, get an extended warranty.

Summary: Good Unit
Review: It's a shame that some people have had defective unit's, and thus drag the rating down. I also read reviews and audioreview.com and it seems to me that a bad unit can come with even the greatest of dvd player's. I have had this DVD player for nearly a month and have been using it probably too much. Have watched at least 50 movies on it or so already, and have used it for long hours. I have not incurred one problem with it. Extremely positive review.

Summary: Buy it if you LOVE PAUSES, SKIPS, AND FREEZING
Review: I have had it less than 24 hours and it's going back to the store. Sure, the quality of the video and sound are wonderful but at what price? I couldn't watch a single DVD without hundreds of freezes and pauses, some short others 5 seconds long. Maybe it was my unit, but I've read about others having the same problem. no thanks.

Summary: Can handle the MATRIX without a problem
Review: After reading many, many Amazon.com reviews we knew that a true test of a DVD player was the ability to play THE MATRIX without skipping or stopping. We initially bought a Sony DVP S300 and it kept skipping at certain parts. Returning that one, we then tried the Panasonic RV31 but it was even worse...it refused to play ANY portion of THE MATRIX. We then bought the Toshiba SD 1700. What a difference! It handled THE MATRIX with no problems AT ALL. If you're wanting to buy a great DVD player for little investment...look no further.
