Summary: freezes
Review: The unit has frozen or jerked with several DVD movies. Purchased new from Sears. Will return before the post-Christmas rush.

Summary: I have had many DVD players since DVD came out. THIS ROCKS!
Review: Seriously for the money, this thing is spectacular. I actually have two. I got the first one with a new Toshiba Pure Flat Screen T.V. (both from Amazon) the picture is spectacular. Don't forget to take advantage of the component video outputs!! Toshiba calls em "Color Stream" If you are looking for a low priced player, either for your primary system or the bedrooms you won't be disappointed. I was so happy with the first DVD and T.V. I order another pair for our guest bedroom. Now if I could just get people to PAY for staying over!

Summary: Great Entry-Level DVD Player
Review: I have a basic A/V system: a tube with analog audio/video inputs, and a nice stereo, so I didn't need any complex output options. I am very pleased with this DVD player.

15 minutes after I hooked it up, I was watching my first DVD, "Contact." I have since tweaked a couple of options on the player (audio Dialogue Enhancement and video Black Level), to make it more compatible with my equipment

Bottom Line: I couldn't be happier. This is a fine entry-level player.

My only caveat: Yes, it's too bad the remote isn't back-lit for watching movies in the dark - but what do you expect for $150??

My order arrived on time and intact from amazon.com, so now I'll go back to enjoying another movie!

Summary: BEST Midrange DVD Player
Review: I purchased one of these DVD players 18 months ago, and recently bought a second one for use at another location. It is the undisputed best of the bunch when it comes to midrange DVD players. Picture quality is outstanding, and it performs on par with units that cost over $100 more. If you are looking for an economical DVD player - this is the one to have.

Summary: I thought Toshiba was a "name" brand.
Review: I can watch one movie on this without it freezing... Office Space. Every other movie I have tried to watch freezes up at some point. The Mummy, Mummy Returns, Gladiator, Aliens,Cats and Dogs, Star Wars, and Castaway all freeze. And not just a quick freeze. I mean the kind of freeze where you go to the bathroom, get a soda, make a sandwich, and sit back down... and then maybe it will start back up. I have tried numerous times to contact the tech support folks at Toshiba and after sitting on hold for about 30 to 45 minutes, I get disconnected. I just hate this thing so much now. And the best part is, I can go out and buy another dvd player or pay to have this one "fixed". I would just look at other players. Don't buy this unless you like the built in potty break features of the freeze ups. (...)

Summary: Works great
Review: This is my first DVD player and I have had no problems with this SD1700 in two months of use. Not one DVD has skipped or misplayed. I bought the very expensive monster cables also and the output is excellent.

Summary: Great for the price
Review: This is not one of the best DVD players out there, but if you are looking for a standard run of the mill DVD player with DTS output, this will do you just fine. Can't beat the price!

Summary: Not that Fancy, but a SOLID investment!
Review: After reading all the reviews about this DVD player and other compairably priced one's (130-230) it was a toss up between this model SD1700, the RCA RC5240P or the Panasonic RV31K. I went out to a local electonics store and compared all three on the floor and then took home the SD1700 and RV31K (picture quality on both was exceptional) and would return the loser. The toshiba played the Matrix with out a hitch, while the panasonic paused three times, test two involved DAS BOOT, even on VHS this movie has exceptional sound on an ordinary set of speakers, on DVD format the sound is awsome only if the player can properly process it and send it to your receiver. The toshiba did great for it's price, while the panasonic sounds slightly better than tape. For the price the toshiba can't be beaten. I will admit that there are other players out that offer more bell's and whistle's, but check out their reliablity and customer reviews. I personally have played 103 dvd's on this set and have only had one pause (the dvd was dirty). Give this dvd a try, it was made to play dvd's, not to be a jukebox (it does play cd's). It is a great intro or bedroom dvd player and you can't beat the price.

Summary: I've had ZERO problems with this machine....
Review: I bought this player earlier this year as a Father's Day gift for my dad. After spending a lot of time researching DVD players here and in "Consumer Reports", I found that Toshiba was highly recommended as one of the most reliable, trouble-free brands on the market. I stand by that opinion 100%. Although some people have gotten defective units, or have perhaps not cared for theirs carefully enough, this unit has been cared for properly, being kept in an entertainment system cabinet, and I've had ZERO problems with it when I use it. I have a Sony® Playstation 2® for myself, and even with the current DVD Driver version (Version 2.10), some of my discs cause it to choke up and it will refuse to play them. That is not the case with the Toshiba. All of my "problem" discs run with ZERO difficulty, and play exactly as they should. If you're looking for a RELIABLE, quality player at a fair price, you can't go wrong with this Toshiba model. If you're one of the unfortunate individuals that got a bad machine, TAKE IT BACK AND EXCHANGE IT! You shouldn't be experiencing the problems you're having, so get another one. I GUARANTEE you won't be disappointed if you get one that functions as it should.

Summary: My first DVD player
Review: I am not very "electronics" savvy so I was a little nervous when I got this home. However, my fears were soon put to rest. It is very easy to set up and then it was ready to play. I am enjoying it thoroughly. I am sure it doesn't have all the features of a more expensive model, but for someone who just wants to enjoy watching movies, it is perfect, even for the novice.
