Summary: The Toshiba SD-1600 is a better choice.
Review: I would go for the Toshiba SD-1600 (also available on Amazon.com for the same price), instead of this one. The SD-1700 is basically the same unit as the SD-1600 right down to the buttons on the front panel, except for 1 major difference. Whereas the 1700 has a 4-speed FF & REW shuttle function over the 1600's 3 speeds, the 1600 has 550 lines of horizontal resolution as opposed to the 1700's 500. Having to decide between the trade-offs, I would have to place the 1600's superior resolution over the 1700's extra speed shuttle function. There have also been complaints by 1700 owners of failure problems (mostly crashing and skipping) after 6 months. What really bugs me is how the engineers took an exceptionally sound unit (the 1600), changed a couple of things around, release it out onto the market under a new model name, only to have unsuspecting owners discover later that they've ended up with a lemon- all because of insufficient testing by the manufacturer. BUY THIS model only if you prefer 1 extra shuttle speed + unreliability over higher reliability and better picture quality- which is what DVD is all about in the first place.

Summary: A great buy!!
Review: I am a college student without a lot of money, but I love movies, and I have wanted a DVD player for some time now. I looked around and decided to get this one, and I love it! It is a great price and I have not had ANY problems with it so far! It is very easy to use, and has great features! I strongly reccommend buying this DVD player if you want a great player for a decent price!

Summary: Bang for the Buck!
Review: I finally got sick of my GE1105P skipping and freezing, and broke down and bought the Tos SD-1700. I LIKE IT! I tried all my trouble disks- X-men, Enemy of the State, etc., and NO PROBLEMS! The remote is small and not backlit, but simple and well marked. The player has a nice set of features and the picture and sound quality are great....

Summary: No complaints!!!
Review: I have already played two dvd's on this and I have to say that I have no complaints whatsoever. I recommend this dvd player to anyone buying one for the first time. With the simple wires already contained in the box, the picture and sound are superb. Monster cables may improve the quality, but I have no regrets.

Summary: An Awesome New Invention!
Review: The DVD system is AWSOME!!!! THe graphics are radical, the movies are played just as good as a movie theater. There are a LOT of movies to choose from, and you don't have to watch the pre-views! This DVD system is the best thing I have bought in a loooong while.

Summary: Working great after 2 1/2 years!
Review: I must be one of the lucky ones, it still does everything as advertised. Even if it died today, I`m not going to whine about a $99 player because it didn`t last 10 years.

Summary: Worst DVD Player ever made
Review: I grant this DVD player does have a good picture. But it has a few problems with freezing and sticking video picutures. Glinches in it plays a DVD. Or not even able to read the DVD it self. I blamed it on the DVD's them self. But it turned out to be the DVD player. I also have problems with it not playing DVD. I put the DVD's in this Toshiba and they would not play. I took them to my neighbors and put the same DVD in their DVD player and they played. I would think twice on buying this DVD player again. I cannot even rate it for the problems it has casued. Also the DVD Player is under a class action suit becasue of these reasons.
