Summary: Audio Sync Problems
Review: I purchased this based on the good reviews I read on here which made it seem like a quality DVD player for the money. I have to admit the video is GREAT. Clear, no skipping or decoding problems to date. However, I've been running into a audio sync problem with almost every DVD I play on this player. Basically, the sound will get out of sync with the video. You'll see the lips of the actors move a second before the sound comes out. I've tried new cables, verified my configuration, and even contacted RCA technical support without any resolution to this problem. For this reason, I would definitely NOT recommend this model.

Summary: What a disappointment!!!
Review: I purchased this dvd player after reading the great reviews that it had. Unfortunately, my experience with this player has been poor. Apparently this dvd player decides when it will and when it won't play. It is very temperamental. The last movie I watched is still stuck inside the player somewhere in the depths of the RCA warehouse. Unfortunately this movie is a rental. I was told that it would be retrieved from the machine and mailed back to me in a timely fashion. It is now 12 days and counting since I mailed them the player. Customer service has no clue where my player is or when I will get the dvd back, if I get it at all. They informed me that if the movie is damaged they will send a letter to notify me. They will not pay for any late fees nor for the damaged dvd. I find this very unsettling since ths dvd player is new and still under warranty.

Summary: For this low a price, it's worth buying
Review: I purchased this unit on November 24, 2001 and, despite what you may read in many other reviews, it's still working and I have only minor complaints. When I purchased it, the price was about 50% higher; now at such a lowered price, you can take a chance with this unit. If you get 18 months or more use out of it, you got your money's worth. I have not experienced the horror stories that some other buyers have reported in their reviews, but that can be attributed to random luck.

Almost always, I am able to play any of my DVD's and VCD's. Occasionally, a disk will not "register" and the player acts like there is no disk present. I have to unload and reload a few times to get it to work.

The most annoying fault is with the remote. At times, I would press a key and nothing happens. In a few instances, the action will take place many seconds later, sort of like it wants to think about it first before it will do my bidding. I think it's a programming error.

In my opinion, the remote has too many buttons and I have mistakenly halted the movie when I only wanted to skip ahead at 2x speed.

The video quality and audio quality are excellent. Setup and connection were troublefree. Unit is attractive in black although that makes the buttons and their labels difficult to read (I have the unit on a shelf at knee level).

This is not a bare-bones product. You get the normal composite video lines, and the S-video outputs, and the component outputs. I don't have the tv that uses the S-video or component outputs, so I can not comment on the quality of those features on this dvd player. You get fast forward and reverse motion in 2x, 4x, 6x and 8x. It also does slow forward at 1/2 and 1/4.

You can magnify the picture 2x and 4x - and then scroll around.

If you have the money available and don't mind spending more, I would not recommend this to you. If you want a unit that works most of the time and are willing to risk having to replace this dvd player within a year or two, I can say go ahead and give it a try.

Summary: FIRST TIME BUYER
Review: I WAS DISAPPOINTED THAT I HAD TO PURCHASE ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT TO CONNECT TO THE TYPE OF TV I HAVE, A MODULATOR, WHICH WAS $... OUTSIDE OF THAT THE UNIT APPEARS TO WORK PROPERLY AND NOW THE TASK OF LEARNING HOW TO USE ALL IT'S FEATURES IS BEFORE ME,ALSO I WAS LEAD TO BELIEVE THIS UNIT WAS A DVD RECORDER, WHICH IT IS NOT

Summary: Rejoice! A Simple Yet Great "Bang For Your Buck" DVD player
Review: I will be honest and say that I did not have high expectations for this DVD player when I ordered it here on amazon. I figured its low price would equate to a very average or maybe lackluster player. Boy was I proven wrong! This player is a steal!

Before I took it out of its box, I was worried that with the 30" TV, the digital cable connection, the DSL that connects from my computer to the cable box, all of the stuff connected to the computer, the VCR connection to the TV (are you getting dizzy yet?), and all of the AC adapters, that a DVD player thrown into the equation would push my medium heaven into chaos. Fortunately, even for me it was incredibly easy and hassle-free to add the DVD player to the equation. It's so easy that you will be dubious that it was such a simple, short task.

Once everything was hooked up I gave the system a run with Madonna's fantastic "Drowned World Tour" DVD to see/hear her sing "Impressive Instant." I was stunned by how visually precise and vividly clear the image appeared on the TV. I've never seen anything of such high quality on that TV, ever! Then as Madonna started to chant "I like to singy singy singy..." something bad was happening. The sound being outputted from the TV was having this strange crackling sound like fireworks. I freaked out fiddling around with the sound options in the DVD menu, to no avail. Then I changed the sound settings on the TV itself and that problem was completely vanquished. I'm not sure, but if you have an old TV lacking special sound features, you may want to reconsider buying this unit. Maybe it was just my TV but I've played that DVD on other various units and it never made such a sound.

Watching films is a breeze and the quality is astoundingly well for the unit's price. The sound is great also and seems to play those advanced features that a bunch of speakers would carry out. Other features included are a simple to use zoom feature, 8x forward/rewind speed, picture adjustment (letterbox, pan and scan, and 16x9 if you have a 16x9 TV), sound adjustments, and a sleek look in the DVD player itself.

The DVD player also plays music CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs quite fine. I never anticipated using my TV as another stereo but it fits the bill quite well. It would've been real nice if the TV screen would show the CD and track info on the TV screen but most home stereos don't do that anyway, now do they? The TV screen discreetly switches to black with the RCA logo dancing along the screen while your CD plays your tunes.

Now for my gripes, especially with the remote. For some people it may not matter so much but the remote is more bulky than it should be and can be annoying to use. It's not one of those remotes you'd want to hold protectively while you watch your DVDs. I'm going to go buy a different remote, and you may want to also when using this unit.

The menu has a rather blah appearance and can be a little annoying to navigate through, despite that it's organized fairly simple. Also, the DVD player doesn't let you manually select a chapter. If you want to see chapter 20, you have to click the chapter up button 19 times to reach it.

Aside from my quibbles regarding that dreadful remote and the arcane menus, it's a great DVD player for the price it's selling for. This would probably be considered a top of the line DVD player a year or two ago. If you've never owned a DVD player before, I especially highly recommend this unit for you. The unit is incredibly simple to connect, and even if you can't operate your toaster, you should be able to breeze through using this player. Don't let the inexpensive price fool you: This DVD player is FANTASTIC!!! Now it's time for me to watch "North by Northwest" in it's glory! See you on Mount Rushmore! I give this player 4 1/2 out of 5 Stars!

Summary: Had to add my two cents
Review: I've had this DVD player for about a year now.. in fact it was a Christmas gift last year. I am with the many, many people who have had trouble with this player in the past few months. It's like playing roulette trying to get the player to read a DVD now when I put it in, only the odds are worse. When I can manage to get a DVD to play, it often freezes and skips in the middle, and the picture quality is horrible. If you look at the reviews from the people who have rated this player 5 stars, you'll notice that many of them say they "just got this player" or "have had it for a few months"... well, that's just great, because that's about as long as it will work properly. Wait until they've had it a few more months, and they'll change their tune. The dissatisfied consumers seem to have gotten a year out of this product. You can count me among them.

Don't buy this player unless you plan to replace it in a year.

Summary: Excellent DVD Player
Review: I've had this player for a month now and it is working very well. I was worried about previous reviews indicating a sync problem between video and audio. I noticed this problem, but only on cheap rip-off DVD's from China, rental and purchased DVD's play just fine. The dynamic range limiting audio feature is excellent for watching movies at night without waking anyone up.

Would be perfect DVD if it had bookmarking and could display CD music file info on screen. It does play mp3 cdr's just fine, though.

Summary: Do NOT buy this DVD player
Review: I've owned this RCA DVD player for about 1 1/2 years now. It worked great in the beginning. Occasionally I would have to unplug it and restart it because either the picture would freeze or the disk drawer would not open. This was a nuisance, but a minor one (or I thought at the time). I also noticed right away that the player became extremely hot. Thinking it was because I hadn't provided enough room around the unit, I rearranged my entertainment center to accommodate this player and give it air. It didn't seem to matter because the player still ran hot. I knew this couldn't be good but because I didn't have constant problems with DVDs playing, I kept using the player.

Well, today it died and now my living room smells like burnt electronics. Not only am I extremely ticked off because this piece of junk lasted less than 2 years, but I'm also concerned about what would have happened if I hadn't tried to watch a movie today and learned that the player would not turn on. Would this thing have started a fire?

I should have learned my lesson with my RCA TV, which stopped working less than 2 years after I bought it (I detect a pattern with RCA products breaking just over their 1 year warranties). I can say that I've learned my lesson now. No more RCA products in this house.

Summary: Let Down by RCA
Review: I, like others, have had problems with this DVD player. It say's "No Disc" every time. I have had this DVD player for a couple months. Went through the online help with no luck. I contacted RCA, and was told it was a problem with the Player, and they would replace it with the same model. Great. Only at a cost to me of $39.95 plus S&H. That's an expensive DVD player. I already purchased this model once, and It's under warranty, then they want me to purchase it again. Duh.
