Summary: Terrific value as a DVD player, a flop with CDs
Review: I bought this player to replace both a defunct entry-level machine I had picked up three years ago and a much older, high-end CD player. I was thrilled by its unaccustomed conveniences and solid handling of DVDs. The drawer opens and closes promptly and with reassuring smoothness, 2x-8x scanning makes navigating a snap even within a 2-hr film, controls on the box as well as the remote are ample and well-thought-out. More important, obviously, image and sound quality are spectacular. Finally, I was nostalgically delighted not just to pay such a low price for so much value, but to do so to a classically American company, even if, unsurprisingly at its price, the product itself came from China. I hadn't heard "His Master's Voice," after all, since my 45-rpm singles' turntable from high-school, just before the last ice age set in.

It's with real sadness, then, that I must say I'll be returning this unit to Amazon. Despite its solid virtuosity as a movie projector, it's unacceptable as a spinner of CDs. At every volume level, there's a distinct buzz from the speakers of both my TV monitor and my stereo system that's roughly as annoying as that of a dentist's drill. I've checked and rechecked connections, replaced cables, etc.: everything, in short, and I can't fix it. The flaw is equally pronounced on commercial CDs straight out of the shrink-wrap and on home-made CD-Rs.

I notice that the player is "out of stock" at present with Amazon. I'm hoping that status reflects a decision to pull back on sales of this particular RCA model, and that others are without the show-stopping flaw described above.

Summary: Poor Dvd Player! Freezes Constantly
Review: I got this dvd player for x-mas and couldn't wait to get it hooked up to my home theater system, and tv. After it was all hooked up i slipped in a band new dvd....it was all good up until about 2 minutes in when the dvd player just froze leaving me with nothing to do but pull the plug. I thought it might just be dirt so i cleaned the dvd player & dvd and it did the same thing again. I tried every other dvd i own and it just doesn't work. It also WON'T play mp3 cds, cdr's, cdrw's, dvd, or cd's. Stay away from this player. I learned my lesson.

Summary: No Good
Review: I had this DVD player for only about 3 months and it quit working, it kept saying LOAD. I called about how to fix it and they told me to buy a new one. I would not recommend this player!

Summary: Great base line DVD player.
Review: I have been shopping for a player for several months. When I saw this one at [local store], I snagged it. Great price and all the features I wanted. However, I got it home, plugged it in and "POP", dead air. Returned it and got the second one home and plugged it into the TV and surround system. WOW!! Great picture and sound!!! Plays all the DVD menus and music cds. Really recommend this model for a basic DVD player.

Summary: Great Little Machine-Price
Review: I have been using this DVD player for a month now and I just love It. The remote is convenient, too. It looks sharp with my other components (Black faced). It has a lot of features, MP3 playback capabilities, and plays all my older CD's. I have not tried a ReWritable CD, but I am sure this little 'work horse' can handle it.

Review: I HAVE THIS PLAYER AND IT IS GREAT

Summary: RCA no longer builds a quality product
Review: I have to admit that I almost fall into the same category as the writer above who said he never learns. I have an RCA television that started to give me problems shortly after I bought it. It quit working completely sometime shortly thereafter. However, when I saw this RCA DVD player (or one just like it, I'm not sure of the model number) at the store I thought it seemed like a good deal and I bought it. Because there is a wider selection of videotapes than DVDs, my wife and I rented videotapes most of the time, occasionally we'd rent a DVD. However, the fourth time we rented and tried to play a DVD (approximately 150 days after purchase) in our RCA DVD player, the player wouldn't even turn on. I contacted RCA (Thomson Multimedia) who told me that they wouldn't do anything because my 90 day warranty was up. They told me that the purpose of the warranty was to cover defects in workmanship and materials. You can't tell me that a player that quits after playing only three DVDs isn't suffering from a defect in workmanship or materials. The player cost me $180 ( I bought it before recent price drops), played three DVD's and they wanted me to pay another $90 to get the extended service plan. I said at the top of this note that I was almost like the guy who said he never learns, well I'm just slow to learn. I paid an average of $60 each to watch three DVDs, you can bet that I'm not dumb enough to pay $90 more. RCA used to make quality products and used to stand behind their products when they created the occasional lemon, not any more, stay away from anything made by RCA.

Summary: GOOD DVD PLAYER
Review: I just bought this DVD player yesterday night at Radioshack and figured I would write a review on it to set some people's minds at ease, because when I was looking at reviews for DVD players to see which one to get, there were alot of people who said that certain players would freeze in the middle of a movie or the sound would drop out. Well, last night after hooking up the player to my TV (it took me a whole 10 seconds) I watched the Godfather Part I straight through and had no problems. Also, I should mention, I dropped it on the cement floor of my basement from about 5 feet and it works fine, it just has a scratch. The only complaint I have is that you can't access menu's without the remote and the remote was no where to be found in the box of my DVD player and that made me mad because I couldn't view any of the deleted scenes or any of the other special features. I was able to watch the movie, though, and that is a good thing. Anyway, I hope this helps you.

Summary: Excellent DVD player
Review: I orginally bought this component to play MP3s that I record. I highly recommend it for that. However, it does even better as a DVD player. I would definitely recommend this player over models that sell for under $[money].

Summary: RCA RC5240P - Multi-Use machine on a budget
Review: I originally bought this DVD player not for its DVD playback but because I wanted a player that would play VideoCDs that I burned on my PC. Before I talk about the DVD playback let me discuss the VCD playback of this unit since this may be the reason many people would buy it.

VCD/SVCD Playback

If you are not interested in, or have no reason to care about VCD burning you may skip this section.
Right away this player gets points with me because it is CD-R/W compatible. I know from experience that it is very difficult to tell if a player will read these discs and the box clearly states it will play these discs which eliminates any uncertainty. For those of who who burn VCD/SVCDs I can tell you the playback is excellent and I have not had any trouble getting any VCDs to play no matter what the media type. It also has a nice feature called a "Track Index" which has the player generate 9 thumbnail pictures from various points in a track allowing you to start from your desired location without fast forwarding. If you are like me and like to make vcds and svcds with higher then normal bitrates then you will like this player. I have made VCDs with bitrates up to 5000 kb/s(the standard is 1150 kb/s) and they played perfectly. So as a VCD/SVCD player this unit is the best.

DVD Playback

Even though I bought this unit primarily to play VCD/SVCDs I still have an interest in watching DVD movies. Normally I have the player hooked up to a 25' GE television through an RF modulator. Even through this low quality hookup the picture was significantly sharper then the picture provided from the satellite tv broadcast. I really wanted to see how good the player actually looked using a high quality display. I convinced a friend to let me use his NEC projector and we had a movie night with my PC speakers(Altec Lansing ATP3) providing the sound. The picture was brilliant through the S-Video connection on the 60' display.
DVD playback never skipped nor did I ever find the layer change a distraction.

Sound

Sound is good through the analog stereo outputs, but this player shines when hooked to a Dolby Digital/DTS reciever through the optical or coaxial digital connection. The analog outs have a slight hiss, the headphone output has this problem as well. In digital mode though the sound is superbly clean and well detailed.

Outputs

For a cheap player this unit has all the goodies.
It has the following:
Video
2 composite video outputs
1 s-video output
1 set of component video outputs
Audio
2 sets of phono outputs
1 coaxial digital output
1 optical digital output

It has a built in stereo AC-3 decoder and will play Dolby Digital and DTS if you have a the appropiate decoders.

MP3 Playback

This player uses and all business no frills method to play mp3s. It will play mp3s up to 320 kb/s and will play VBR mp3s also. The playback sounds good, not cd good, but good.
The mp3 playback is the weakest part of the unit though. You can't fast forward and the player seems to skip the first 1/2 second of a file.

Miscellaneous

The remote that comes with the unit is a universal and it controlled my GE tv with no adjustments. The remote is well laid out and useable. The only thing wrong with the remote is the color scheme, pink and purple on black just doensn't do it for me, plus some people may find the sixe of the remote unappealing. I like the look of the unit overall especcially the front panel. The front panel has all the basic controls needed to run a movie. The play button is large and glows blue making it easy to see in the dark.
