Summary: HORRIBLE
Review: I BOUGHT THIS DVD PLAYER ABOUT A 6 MONTHS AGO AND I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT TROUBLE WITH IT. AT FIRST IT WOULD ONLY EXECPT DVD'S AFTER THE 10TH TIME YOU PUT IT IN. THEN IT WOULD JUST TURN OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MOVIE. NOW IT WON'T EVEN TURN ON. VERY DISAPPOINTED. I ALSO BOUGHT IT AT TARGET BUT GAVE IT AS A GIFT TO MY BOYFRIEND AND HE THREW THE BOX AWAY. SO I'M STUCK WITH IT. NOT ONLY THAT BUT PHILIPS DOESN'T EVEN HAVE THE MODEL LISTED ON THERE WEBSITE SO YOU CAN'T EVEN
GET ON-LINE HELP WITH IT.

Summary: Using it in a van
Review: I currently have been using this in my Conversion Van for about 2 months. So far, it is flawless. It uses 12v to run, and you have a 110v adapter to connect it to home voltage for use in the house. The system has a very large amount of audio & video outputs and special features. The stand that it rests on is garbage, and the main reason why I give this 4 stars instead of 5. For the price, it seems to be an excellent device with very low power consumption - good for my car.

Summary: Know the facts
Review: I have a small response to the post by andrew-s. A dvd player is not an amp or preamp, if you output your audio from the dvd player, whether it be to a receiver or tv, the device you connect the dvd player to will always be the device that controls the audio. The dvd player is merely a source, not a means to control the audio. I just wanted to leave everyone out there some fact about setting up a home theater system. Make sure you do your research when you are looking at putting together a system, there are magazines and online articles that will make every question you may have crystal clear. As a final note, I have not bought this unit yet, but it is #1 on my to-buy list. The optical audio and component video outputs are the major selling points for me.

Summary: Size Does Matter!
Review: I just purchased this DVD player at my local Target. I wasn't looking to purchase another DVD player since I already own 2. However, when I saw the size of this player plus all the great features and the numerous formats of audio/video playback support I couldnt resist it. If that wasn't enough I couldnt believe the price it was on sale for. It was on sale for [X]. I thought it was a mistake since they are normally reatailed at [X]. I'd figure what do I have to lose? Luckily, they had one left but someone had apparently opened the box for the old "let me see what's inside peek" The target employee told me since I have the last one,and is already open, he would discount me an additional [X] off! Talk about a deal...everything was in the box. Sure as noted by the last review you cant use the "volume and audio adjustment" button...but who cares! use the original remote for the digital reciever. I have thrown all types of DVD movies, MP3's JPGS, even an SACD CD and played them all flawlessly. The picture quality (using the Pr/Pb/and Y jacks) is superb! I love this little machine! IT has both the coaxial AND Optical inputs. The only thing that would of given this player 5 stars is no progressive scan (for HDTV Ready TV's)...otherwise GREAT UNIT...even for the [X]! Once you see the size (think of it as a DVD-ROM drive only slight larger) Build quality is also excellent. Once I have really "broken this thing in" I will come back for a second review.

Summary: Very small, works well for me
Review: I needed a vertical DVD player to fit in the cabinet in my bedroom and this model is pretty much the only one I've found. The unit is much smaller than you'd think looking at the web page and takes up very little space. It's only about 9-1/2 inches tall when standing vertically - and only about 2 inches thick. It does have a stand as a base that spreads out a little. The performance has been perfect for me (is there such a thing as a DVD player with a bad picture?). As 'guest from Capitola' says, no DVD player has a volume control that is part of the player -- that's the function of your amp or TV to do. The remote that comes with this model does have a volume control that would work with a Philips receiver if you had one, but that's no big thing. That's only a couple buttons out of the 50+ on the remote and a non-issue to me. It has 6 audio outputs providing discrete channels if you have equipment that can handle them; for now I have it plugged into the TV which means only the left and right front--and that also works fine with this unit.

Summary: You get what you pay for!
Review: I would actually rate this DVD player at 4.5 stars. I have 4 DVD players and I like this one the best. It has all the latest-greatest video connections. It is small, has great form without any loss of function. My other players are all tray loaders but I like the slot loader on this one. If it resides in a cabinet with doors, you don't have to leave space for the tray to open. The downside to this player is that even though it is 12 Volt, it does not come with a twelve volt cigarette lighter adaptor, nor do they make one. Another neg for the unit is that while being far from loud, the motor is slightly noisier than my other DVD players. I guess this is because of the slot loader.
Being a digital camera/PC user I can also appreciate the players portability and ability to read JPEG files copied on CD-Rom from my personal computer. I can use it to run a slide show of all my photographs on my large screen TV. This is great entertainment for guests!
I have used this player for about 3 months now with no problems. All said and done I would buy this player again.

Summary: Nice little dvd
Review: I would echo the comments on this being very nice, and very little. Target does carry a smaller DVD player, that is less expensive, but does not claim to support some of the additional capabilities I need.For those who are concerned with form over function, this is a slot loading player, no tray to break off when moving things around. As it sounds like there are some people using, or thinking of using this in a car or van, you may want to see if the stand mount hole can be used to secure the drive in place. It is a form stand over function, but it's mount point should keep the drive from bouncing around too much. I picked this up as a DVD I can take with me to events where I may want to show vcds, dvds, or play mp3's. I would have liked to see a random play in the mp3 player, but I could also encode a disk with the tracks stored randomly if I need. It's not perfect, but it fits what I was originally looking for.

Summary: DON'T BUY UNLESS YOU OWN A PHILIPS AUDIO RECEIVER
Review: In general, this is a very nicely designed unit. But it has one problem that is so serious that I will be returning the unit immediately. Philips clearly states in the manual (verified with customer support) that all Audio functions (volume up/down, treble, bass, mute etc.) only work with a Philips brand Audio Receiver. So your choices are to use use your receiver's volume/mute etc. or attach the Audio through your TVs tiny speakers. In my case my receiver's volume doesn't work with a remote, so I will have no means of controlling the volume of the player. This is a underhanded attempt to force people to buy a Philips receiver to work a very basic function of the player. The entire bottom half of the remote is non-functional with any receiver other than a Philips brand. This may not be a problem if you don't mind using two remotes and have a remote operated receiver. But you still won't be able to control other audio functions like bass/treble/surround effects etc. I have never encountered a similar DVD player that won't control volume without buying a same branded audio comoponent. I'm returning it tomorrow.

Review: owned one for a year.
- metal case, well built
- plays dvd, svcd, vcd, mp3 no problem.
- excellent picture, versatile outputs
- runs either on 12VDC (for car, you need to make/buy a plug) or
110 AC.
- small enough and easy to use in the car. fits in the seats
back pocket, my 5 yr old can turn it on and use it.
this is great price, I paid $150 when it was exclusive at target.

Review: This DVD player cost much less than most others. Philips Magnavox is a reputable brand, with quality products. As all companies do, they have LOW END PRODUCTD AS WELL, as to meet the market's demands. Hence the saying, you get what you pay for. Don't let people's reviews (who aren't even reviewing this particular PRODUCT!!) become part of your decision making, on whether or not to purchase this DVD Player. I have one in my kid's room, and for their needs, it's PERFECT. No Problems to date!!! Good Luck!
