Summary: Worth every penny
Review: After conducting a lot of research and purchasing the top of the line Philips player (the hard to find 865)and having nothing but problems- despite calls to Philips, etc.- I sent it back for the Pioneer 626. This is just an outstanding player and absolutely loaded with features (having capabilities most probably won't take full avantage of, but it's nice to know your player can handle your setup as it grows and improves). Extraordinarily crisp picture, crystal clear sound, built in Dolby Digital AND DTS ( a rarity), easy to set up and use- and virtually every feature can be handled by the joystick remote. Yes you can buy a cheaper, functional player, but especially considering how much this has come down from its original spendy list price (checking around online retailers pays off), why? A serious machine that'll satisfy the most demanding cinemaphiles. You get what you pay for- do right by yourself and spring for the 626.

Summary: OUT OF THIS WORLD
Review: Before I purchesed the 626D I had a 515 also from Pioneer. I was very satisfied with the picture but a little dissapointed with its sound. The new 626D performs a studio quality sound and also gives a tremendous "3D" picture. I use it with the Toshiba 100Hz digital TV and I am quite impressed with the sensation I get from them.

Summary: Major Disappointment
Review: I bought a Pioneer DV626D based on the high praise I have read about the machine. I have to say that during it's short life I was pleased with the performance, however, after about ten hours of use it decided to no longer open the disc drawer - which makes the product pretty much useless. This wasn't the end of my disappointment, though. The Pioneer authorized service provider insisted that I get proof of warranty from Pioneer before they could do anything for me. Pioneer's Customer Service (800-421-1404) told me they don't warrant a product not purchased from an authorized dealer and that my claim for service was subject to investigation. I was also told that it was MY obligation to determine if a dealer selling a Pioneer product was authorized by Pioneer to do so. These terms and conditions are on the warranty card (although not in their advertising) so one effectively has to purchase the product, open the box and read the card to learn this bit of wisdom. I have many higher priced consumer products that don't have this kind of anti-consumer restriction as part of their warranties. It appears to me (my opinion only) Pioneer is more concerned about WHO you buy from than IF you buy their products. Pioneer did ultimately approve the service but, given the reliability and approval process, I have now removed Pioneer products from my list for future consideration.

Review: I have had my pioneer dv626d for a month know and it is great, both the sound and picture quality are the best i have seen on any dvd player. Before i had the 626d i had the sony dvsp7700, and i had problem after problem with it, yeah the picture was good but the sound was totally rubbish. the movement of the caricters in many films didnt coenside with the sound, the whole thing was out of sink. when i changed to the pioneer 626d i found that, that was no longer a problem. i currently have the 5.1 channel surround set up and, no matter what player you have you will never find one that can deliver the same picture and sound quality that the pioneer dv626d can. If you dont have a dvd player and want one i suggest that you buy this one you will not regret it.

Summary: The minute they come back in stock... buy it.
Review: I have read some of the reviews on this player and I have to agree, it is a little flimsy looking... But I don't stare at the player, I watch the movie! No problems since I took it out of the box. I have played at least 40 DVD's so far (and several at least twice), not one problem. I have a Jenson Audio + Video Receiver that I purchased in 1982, and a Panasonic 27 inch TV (with the "S" connector) that is fairly new. Everything hooked up fine, I was playing the Matrix within 5 minutes from the time UPS pulled away from my door.Well, I think I hear Flash Gordon calling me (did I mention I was a SciFi junky). Drop me a line if you need more specifics. Thank you Amazon.com for another great product.

Summary: Video quality and DTS / DD decoding make it a good buy
Review: I have to say one thing right off. This unit has played everything I've thrown at it without a glitch, and that includes many NetFlix rental DVD's--they show up in all levels of scratchosity. In addition to DVDs, it plays CD-R/CD-RW/VCD. The picture quality is excellent in RGB mode and has plenty of adjustments and memory facilities - but I tend not to use these after inital setup - unstaturated color can also be adjusted with Gamma correction and sharpness can be adjusted too. As for the sound, this unit boast both DD (Dobly Digital) and DTS decoding, which means you can save some money when buying a receiver. The Pioneer has had no problems with anything I've seen so far. The internal DD decoder is as good as any I've heard (although comparisons have been difficult since I've not had other players in my house - only in demo rooms etc...). On the negative side --the remote weighs about a half-ounce and the wobbly little joystick is a little annoying, and the playe'r looks a bit 'cheap' if I may say so. These are just external design flaws that have no effect on performance, but I though they should be discussed anyway. Hope this helps

Review: I kept this film listserv recommendation in my file folder and as my birthday approached, I pulled it out and asked for it as my Birthday gift. My listserv was right. It is an excellent product. It plays beautifully and has never given us a moment's problem. We've been using it every night for 7 months and it operates perfectly night after night. An added dividend is that it also plays my CDs. I know virtually nothing about electronics equipment which is why I have to watch for recommendations and then act on those. I figured a listserv of film fanatics would be my best resource and it was.

Summary: DVD Player plays everything with Great Picture and Sound
Review: I previously owned a JVC XB-701 DVD player which I had numerous problems with. I purchased the 626 as a replacement and I am very pleased. The first thing I noticed about the Pioneer as compared to the JVC was a much finer picture as well as enhanced audio performance. A reviewer on Amazon had stated that the Pioneer would not play the Matrix. Well I just tried it on my Pioneer and it played fine. It also played all the Extras including the Easter Eggs. I have a collection of about 200 DVDs and this player has played them all with no skips, pixelation, or any other problems. I highly recommend this player to anyone in the market. It costs a bit more but it is well worth it with all the features you get. Hurry becuase Amazon has them on sale now so do not miss this oppurtunity!

Summary: Poor build quality - defective unit.
Review: I really needed a second DVD player and after much searching I settled on this Pioneer unit. But like so many other Pioneer DV-626D players reviewed..., this one also failed to display any video. I eventually went with the Toshiba SD-2200...and have had zero problems to date. I gave up a few features from the Pioneer, gained a few others on the Toshiba, and saved...(money) to boot. It's doubtful Pioneer equipment will ever make it beyond my front door again.
