Summary: Great Player, Great Price
Review: Since I am pretty much electronics-challenged, I did a lot of research and asked a lot of questions about DVD players for about a month before deciding on the Toshiba 1600. I knew I didn't want to spend over $200, but I thought I'd have to settle for a lesser quality player. I still can't get over the quality of the Toshiba for the price. Great picture, great features, and a great price. I would caution buyers (with this or any other DVD player) to check the connections on your TV, especially if it's not a newer set. You may be required to purchase a converter box. Just check it out so that you don't have to make another trip to the store.

Summary: Almost a dream come true for first time DVD experiencers
Review: I decided on this player based on the great reviews I found on the Web and how it looked in the store (I also wanted it to match my 27" Toshiba TV). It was very simple to set up, just make sure you use the Monster cable instead of the "temporary hook-up" cables that come with it. I like the fact that it has component-video outputs; although my TV is 3 years old and wasn't a top model, so these were absent. I instead used the S-Video input that I was very suprised to have found on the TV's back, and I know my next TV will have component inputs, so I can easily upgrade. As for the audio, I was able to hook the player to the TV and use the TV outs to connect to my Yamaha Dolby Pro-Logic Surround mini-stereo. This gave me the ability to hear cable in surround (only certain programs), and get intense audio from the DVDs. And again the next stereo I buy will have Dolby Digital decoders and a coaxial digital audio input.

I must say this player is super simple to use and enjoy. Yes, the remote is small and unlit, but this isn't a progressive-scan player, so what do you want? The picture is great and I can't imagine it being any better; and the audio is crisp and energetic to say the least. I like the PLUGE black-level expansion which really works great, and the zoom is a neat feature. The 3D Spatializer is a good feature to have if you want or have to use only your TV's speakers. Another good inclusion is the FL dimmer which really helps when you don't want to be distracted by the bright display in a dark room.

Overall, if you're on a budget or don't want or need to spend over $250 or so on a DVD player, I demand you check this Toshiba out. You will find no other better players out there, guranteed.

Summary: Does not work with CR-R or RW format
Review: The 1600 works great unless you want to use it for video formated CD's and recorded CD's.

Summary: Note the requirements
Review: This is my first DVD player. All my prior experience was with VHS players -- which use simple coax cables. When it arrived and didn't have a coax connector/cable (and my TV doesn't have yellow/red/white connectors) I thought I'd run it via the VCR (which does have those connectors). It worked, but the picture quality was horrible. As noted by another reviewer, I did READ THE MANUAL and discovered the issue related to copy protection. It just would have been nice to have known BEFORE I got the SD-1600 so I could have obtained the correct accessories. I had to find this important fact in a footnote on page 16. Apart from that, the machine seems really nice.

Summary: Excellent Product
Review: I just took the plunge and purchased this unit. It is outstanding. Although using a DVD through a VCR is probably does not give the best picture, it worked quite well doing it this way. Another review said you cannot, I had no problem. I have an older TV set so this is the only way I could hook it up until later. Plays all my DVDs with no problem. Well worth the money. I purchased it for $179 with the current $20 rebate.

Review: I wish you would read your instruction manual. If the player shuts down after pausing, all you have to do is hit PLAY, not POWER. Hitting POWER will start the disc over. Hitting PLAY will take you to where you left off. Also, if you do not have a s-video or 3-line compatable television, you need to buy the box. All DVD palyers are like this, HELLO!!! Next time read the manual. Do not do it yourself. In my opinion the player is perfect. I have no complaints whatsoever.

Summary: A Great Freakin Player
Review: This is a great player for the money. The zoom button alone is worth the price. Anyone that would try to hook up through VCR is crazy. you will not be upset at buying this player. Trust me.

Summary: for this price, you can't go wrong...
Review: first time dvd buyer, did quite a bit of research before purchasing, and made my choice - toshiba sd1600 - based on many of the reviews here. i've had it about a week, playing a few movies and quite a bit of music on it. i have to say that i've not been dissapointed at all. the picture quality is excellent, the sound is very good, the set-up is a snap...only complaint (and it's very minor) is that the remote is not back-lit...but i knew that before i bought it, so obviously, it wasn't a major concern. otherwise, this thing is perfect. in order to upgrade to higher quality audio/video capabilities, you'll likely have to spend about twice as much. for the money, this can't be beat.

Summary: A good DVD player, like most, but 2 problems
Review: First problem. The entire DVD player shuts down after only 20 minutes of being paused, completely forgetting where it was on the DVD. I don't mean that a screen saver comes on. It does that too much faster and that is an OK feature. I mean it turns itself off. This a very irritating feature if you are someone who watches DVDs intermittently while you are working on projects around the house. Once it is shut down it takes several minutes to start it up, you have to wait through the threatening FBI warning, get back to the menu and find the place you were on the DVD. BTW, if anyone from Toshiba reads these reviews I'd love to be able to disable this feature. I would not have bought this DVD player if I had known about this feature. Second (this may be true of other DVD players) you cannot run the signal from the DVD player through your VCR to the TV. It is designed like this to prevent you from recording DVDs onto tape. I ended up having to buy a little box from Radio Shack for $30 bucks to fix it. Finally, I saw no improvement in signal quality with the Monster cable. You don't need it to make the DVD player work, Toshiba provides a 3 part cable with the DVD player that works fine.

Summary: Good DVD Player at a Good Price
Review: I am very pleased with this DVD player. I have played several DVDs on it and it has performed perfectly. The picture and sound are great. Can't beat it for the price.
