Summary: Technical Specs Data is not correct
Review: I purchased this unit as a Gift for my daughters Birthday, she lives in Trenton, GA. Technical data (obtained from Amazon.com) said that it would play "DVD-Video (NTSC), VCD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, VCD, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, MP3-CD, JPEG CD; 8 and 12 cm discs". It will Play DVD-Video with good results. It does not play DVD+R. I transfered several VCR Tapes to DVD+R for her to see. They Play on my computer and my DVD Player. They will not play on the RCA DRC220N DVD Player I bought for her! I will never buy Electronic items from a "Book Store again"!!!!

Summary: My First DVD Player!
Review: I received this player as a Christmas gift, and I am not disappointed! The sound and video quality are very high. The player plays almost anything, including VCDs. If you have a CD burner, that's invaluable!

The controls are easy. I was able to work it without even reading the instructions. The on-screen displays are pretty straight foward. The only problem I've had is that sometimes VCDs will temporarily freeze up if you try to "rewind" them. However, I think that's mostly due to the original quality of the video file.

All in all, this player proves that RCA is still WICKED in the electronics world!

Summary: Great DVD Player
Review: I was in the market for a DVD player that could read JPEG files and from DVD-R. This was by far my best option at a great price. It's great to have slide shows from digital photos, but it can't read the photos that are too big in file size (ie, restored at the highest resolution of a 3 mp camera). It is user friendly and compatible with almost everything that comes in a "disc" format. This is my first DVD player so I dont have a point of reference, but so far, I'm loving it!!

Summary: Happy Customer
Review: I've had this DVD player for about a year now and have been completely satisfied with it. I don't have a fancy TV setup, nor surround sound, so to me "bells and whistles" aren't important... functionality and dependability are. And this player hasn't disappointed.

Soon after buying the unit I DID have problems playing certain DVDs, for reasons I still don't understand. However, after checking the RCA customer service website, I went through their Troubleshooter procedure, and it was recommended to try "soft" resetting the unit, which is accomplished with an easy button combo between the remote and the unit itself. I tried... the result? Played the problem DVD's perfectly. These DVD's still occasionally do not read, but resetting the unit in this manner has worked every time.

Some may see that as a hassle... and I guess in a way it is... but it happens VERY rarely, and is corrected in a matter of seconds (and hey, I've got to get up to put the DVD in anyways, so it's not like it's costing me extra energy).

Other than that I have had no problems with it. DBD's play well (other than a couple odd balls), audio CD's play well (including self-made CD-R's), the remote is full-functioned and simple.

All in all.... nice looking affordable, well-made, and dependable product.

GOod stuff.

Summary: Works great
Review: I've had this since last September and have been very pleased with its performance, playing dozens of rented and purchased movies. No problems at all. One slight annoyance: it has a distractingly bright red pilot light, which is lit when the player is OFF! (Fixed it with a bit of duct tape...)

Summary: Love it.
Review: I, too had problems with voices not being heard. If sound is sent to stereo tv, the voices disappeared. But when playing in dts 5.1 mode through my receiver via digital connection, there is no problem at all. It seemed to me, though, that the problem was with the dvd itself wanting to output in dolby 6 channel sound, and those dvd's didn't have plain old 2 channel stereo output as an option. A problem created by the dvd itself and not the player imo; seems many dvd's are wanting to output only in dolby digital for a home theater system with 6 speakers and those who want to pipe sound through a two speaker tv are out of luck...?

So, I highly recommend this player, for price, quality, and value. The dolby digital sound output is flawless when hooked up properly to a dolby digital dts 5.1 compatible receiver, and the picture couldn't be more pristine. I am extremely happy with my purchase!

Summary: When it works, it's average
Review: It has recently come to my attention that I am not the only person experiencing laser pick-up problems with this player. For the less technical, pick-up problems are when the laser cannot properly read the contents of discs. I'm a pretty big perfectionist about the condition of discs, most of mine are in as new condition, so that isn't the problem. This only made things worse however, when this player started scratching discs. The pick-up problems mean that the picture on screen freezes every so often for about 9 seconds. ...

To cut to the point: 5 month old player is having problems reading discs.

Video-CD playback also isn't exactly fantastic. Since VCDs only have a vertical resolution of 240 pixels (NTSC), they don't have enough lines to fill the full resolution of a TV set. Most [higher end] players fix this problem by somehow stretching the image to the full TV display. This player doesn't stretch it as such. Well, it gives that effect, but it just shows every line twice. The result is a picture that jumps up and down on the screen and is plain annoying.

To cut to the point: Jumpy picture on freeze frames and VCD playback.

The player also sells itself as CD-R compatible. This is true, it DOES run CD-R, however when playing VCD movies from CD-R, you basically have to watch the whole thing through without pausing or rewinding. Rewinding and fast-forwarding have problems. Like most features of the player, they do work, just not very well. They tend to lock the player up, meaning you'll have to power off and on again, and skip back to where you were on the disc. But, like I just said, the fast forwarding and rewinding don't work very well at all, meaning you're stuck.

Once you've paused the disc, pressing play to unpause it will start the sound playing a little before the picture starts to run again. It's not too noticeable at first but eventually the sound and picture will be totally out of sync like a Godzilla movie.

To cut to the point: Extremely error-ridden Video CD capabilities, even although the player pitches itself as VCD compatible.

As an added bonus, it also scratches discs (as previously mentioned), and the menus are slow and clunky to navigate with the big, fat remote.

One good thing about the player though, is that it can be made to play back all region discs without any problems. Simply press 1670, Power to unlock the player. (It is my belief that a product sold as a "DVD Player" should play ALL DVDs).

Summary: Problem Player.
Review: The only thing this player has going is that it plays VCDs. Half of my dvd collcetion (60) will not play on this bug-ladden player. And they are all region free discs! You will not get much help from the folks at the RCA custmer service website. Avoid this player like the plague. I had to give this player 1 star because you can't leave a zero.

Summary: This product never worked properly!
Review: This DVD player is from a well known brand. I expected it to work at least once but it failed to play DVDs from day one. I will avoid all RCA products in the future.

Summary: Junk--avoid products made by Thomson/RCA
Review: This DVD player is junk. I have had several movies that will not play in it. I lived with that. Now it plays through perhaps 10 to 20 minutes of an audio CD and just shuts off mid-disc. RCA/Thomson customer service website and phone help is a joke. It is beyond the 3-month replacement warranty period so I must pay $50 charge to have it replaced, plus $10 or more to shipping. I will never buy anything made by Thomson again. They build poor quality products and then, even when problems are widespread, they do not stand behind them.
