Summary: Can't they do better?
Review: I've had this DVD player for 2 years and have watched hundreds of movies so far. Its behind in the technology curve now, but its reliability and quality are good indicators of the whole Toshiba line. I'm particularly impressed with the picture quality when matched to my Toshiba television set using the compositve video outputs - significantly better than the standard coax output and S-video output. The one down side is that it doesn't play any VCD format disks. My goal was to convert all my 8mm video to VCD format so that I could play them in my DVD, but I was unsuccessful. After scouring web sites I found that the Pioneer DVD players seem to provide the best support for playing all the diffent DVD formats, so that's what I'll probably buy in the future. However, if you're looking for a solid entry-level player - this one is it.

Summary: dont be fooled
Review: I've had this for about 5 months and it's great. Pair it with a nice tv and a dolby digital receiver and you are set. Images and sound are top notch. CD audio is top notch.

No problems with any discs. Some say the downcoversion for widescreen movies is worse than other players, but I don't see it. I love widescreen movies with this player.

It won't play any CD-R or video cd. Remote is not great but I use a universal remote.

Summary: Great player, zoom a plus, remote a minus
Review: I've had this player for six months. It certainly does the job quite well, S-Video output is great, menu access is speedy. One frill that's turned out more useful than I expected is the "zoom"; reading credits on our 27" screen is much easier when we zoom in a bit! The remote is a definite bummer. The old (and now higher end) Toshiba remote is terrific and "ergonomic". Well, they still call this an "ergonomic" remote, but it is no such thing. All buttons are tiny, hard to find, and in fairly muddled arrangement. Still, the 2109 has given our family a good start in DVD. Have a blast!

Summary: White Dots Annoying
Review: OK After much research I bought this player. I love it EXCEPT for little white dots that appear once in a while. These types of things annoy me to no end. I have tested several brand-new DVDs on it and little white dots appear in the SAME place every time. If it was a bad hookup, or bad DVD then they would be random spots but the player keeps having these spots. I am returning it. This player is being discontinued - maybe I'll wait for the new model. Other than that, I loved all it's features! Yes the remote sucks but it is a cool piece of electronics.

Summary: This Unit Is GREAT! Stop Complining!
Review: Ok, This is one of the VERY FEW units, that you can play just about ANY video on, with no skips, etc. It has great audio, video, and loaded with features.Notheless some of you still want to complain about the size of the remote? Give me a break! We have technology here that just 10 years ago was unheard of, and your worried about having to put down your beer, and actually look at the remote? Come on people, this is getting a little silly. Let me swap you out the rotary(God forbid) tuning TV(with NO remote) I have in my basement for a week, and THEN talk to me about a "little remote", or not being "ergo correct".

Summary: SD2109 Highly Recommended
Review: PROS: * Above average picture and audio clarity: Before purchasing SD2109, compared it to more expensive DVD players (ie: Sony DVPS550D, Panasonic DVD-A320, Yamaha DVD-S795) and found that the Toshiba's picture/audio clarity was noticeably better than most. In addition, when compared to other DVD players in the same price range (ie: Sony DVPS330, Panasonic DVD-A120), the SD2109's picture/audio quality was noticeably superior than all. Picture quality is very sharp, colour definition is very rich/robust (due to 10-Bit, 27 mHz Video D/A Converter). Audio is very clear/crisp (due to24-Bit/96 kHz PCM Audio Compatibility). 3D Spatializer (mimicks virtual 3D surround sound via only 2 speakers) is a little gimmicky though * Colorstream Component video outputs: hooked up SD2109 to my Sony Wega KV32FV15 via Monster M500V interconnect cables. Produces the sharpest, clearest picture/colour I've ever seen on a TV . If your TV has component video inputs, use them (don't be cheap with your cables though). * Easy-to-use on-screen menu selections (icon-based) for easy setting up of the SD2109 * Zoom feature is really nice: allows very good clarity at 4 (?) zoom levels * Another under-estimated feature...press stop and press play to resume where you pressed stop. No need to start from the beginning and skip to whatever chapter you were at. also, time search is useful * Value for the dollar: for the price, dollar-for-dollar, the best DVD player on the market. * Watch "The Bug's Life" and see for yourself just how good the SD2109 is

CONS: * Remote: I don't care what anyone says...the remote buttons are too small and I find that the buttons need a "heavy" and "precise" click to make the remote function * Aesthetically looks cheap: personal wish....wish Toshiba made the unit look a little more "richer" looking * Had some problems with vertical pixel bleed/fade in Saving Private Ryan but every other DVD seemed fine (maybe the DVD was defective? ) * Wish it had built-in Dolby® Digital/DTS Decoding with 5.1Ch. Outputs (but at this price, I am not complaining) Thats it.

Summary: Best value DVD player with above average picture/sound quality. Undisputed leader in its price class, rivals more expensive/fully featured DVD players in terms of picture/sound quality. BELIEVE ME, YOU DO NOT NEED TO SPEND MORE TO GET A BETTER DVD PLAYER. DO NOT BE FOOLED BY ITS BARGAIN-BASEMENT PRICE, the SD2109 is the best DVD on the market today in its price range, comparable with many more expensive DVD players.

Summary: good DVD player, poor CD player
Review: The disk transport makes a *lot* of noise playing CDs, but is quiet playing DVDs (different speeds?). There is a noticable sync buzz on the analog audio outputs. My 10+ year old CD player sounds noticably better, and I'm not an Audiophile. The picture is great and the zoom is nice and Amazon's price is amazing. I returned mine and got a Sony S530D which is slient playing CDs, has no sync buzz and sounds just as good as my old CD player. It doesn't have zoom and was $80 more, but now I'm happy. (Assuming the "lip sync" problem with the Sony doesn't bite me !)

Summary: decent player
Review: the image quality is good, as well as the audio, but i would definatly recommend steping up to the sd3109.why? the remote on the 3109 is a million times easier to use , the 3109 has component video out for even better picture quality, and has built in DD decoding.also, for audiophiles, the 3109 is the only DVD player below $2000 that will read the HDCD format (high resolution CD)which are CD's encoded with 20 bit info versus 16 bit on standard CD's.the differance is very noticable. so overall the extra $100 is well spent on the upgrade to a 3109

Summary: No regrets
Review: The most used controls on the remote (ff-stop-play-rew) could be a bit bigger, but that's my only complaint.

The player arrived surprisingly soon from Amazon (less than 36 hours after final mouse-click by Priority Mail). That and the quality of the player make for a completely satisfying purchase
