Summary: Lot's of Desirable Features, But Some Practical Limitations
Review: - Had a brief drop-off or partial loss of signal (3 to 4 rows of white boxes running across the top or bottom of the picture). My friends say this occurs sometimes on dirty or worn DVD's; however, both instances occured with brand new, out of the wrapper movies--"Men In Black" and "Independence Day." I later played "MIB" on my daughter's Fisher S2000 and there was no problem.

- The remote control unit looked to be ergonomic, but was not that easy to manuever, especially the small buttons ringing the central hub. Not as easy or intuitive to use as our Fisher's.

- The instruction booklet eventually provided necessary information, but it is not a "quick read."

- The picture quality and sound it delivered to our 32" Toshiba made in 1998 was terrific and exceeded our expectations.

After doing some research, I got the M301 because it had a lot to offer for the money. [This was the second DVD player purchased for our household; the other is the Fisher.] I had seen some comments last year about signal drop-off in Samsungs on bulletin boards, but hoped that this concern would have been addressed. We returned the unit to Best Buy with no hassel. I have not decided if I'll try another Samsung or will go with another make.

Summary: electronicsnewbie
Review: ...I am new to purchasing electronics and did a lot of research on Amazon and through Consumer Reports and Samsung was one of the two with the highest ratings. Panasonic was the other, but I chose Samsung because it was ...lower in price. It was very easy to hook up, I have a TV that is 12 years old and it doesn't have the red white and yellow connections, so I just hooked it up to my VCR and bam it was set, and I can still use the VCR. It's silver in color and it looks great, The remote control is easy to use, just need to learn all of the features available and how to use them. It has a great picture and good sound too, I'm sure if I had a newer TV It would have an even better sound and picture. So far I have only owned this for a week, which isn't much time, but I am really enjoying it. I have viewed PEARL HARBOR, SHREK, and JURRASIC PARK III, (the first two I own, the third I rented.) And the Music it plays sounds great too!

Summary: my first dvd player
Review: Being my first dvd player, I don't have a strong basis for comparison. But I can say the setup was extremely easy, the quality of the image appears excellent, the operation is largely intuitive, and the price seems right. Downsides: the manual is pretty skimpy. While there is a shuttle wheel on the face plate, the remote doesnt offer one. and the remote, which is called a universal remote, has no vcr controls, but does fine controlling my sony tv. I have yet to try the MP3/cd-r playback.

Summary: Good for the price, but lots of annoyances
Review: First of all, a response to the reviewer who had problems with brightness and/or jumpy DVD playback: this DVD player, like all others made in the U.S., has circutry called "Macrovision" that is designed to prevent you from copying DVDs onto your VCR. The technical details are unimportant, but the result is that you cannot connect your DVD to your VCR and pass the signal through to the t.v.; instead, you'll have to connect it to the t.v. separately, using the video and audio jacks, or through an RF modulator box (you can get them at Radio Shack). Past Samsung DVD players allowed you to bypass the Macrovision protection by using certain secret codes on the remote control, but this model doesn't seem to support that.

Besdies the fact that you are prevented from setting up your entertainment center the way you want, this model does have a few other pesky features. The machine takes an unusually long time to read a disc upon insertion and recognize whether it is a music CD, mp3, or DVD and respond accordingly. Also, I've sometimes had difficulty pulling up the DVD menu while in the middle of a program.

Otherwise, the unit does a good job with the DVDs I've used, including some relatively scratched DVDs from Netflix. Audio quality with both DVDs and CDs is good, although I haven't tried it with mp3's. The remote is ok, although there are lots of tiny, somewhat badly labeled buttons and a joystick that takes some getting used to.

If you don't need the CD/mp3 features, you're better off buying an older Samsung model-- the 700 and 900 series can be easily reprogrammed to turn off region coding and Macrovision. If you do want the audio features, this model supplies them at a decent price, but be prepared for some annoyances as well.

Summary: Outstanding value
Review: For the money, this is a great DVD player. My best friend made fun of me for not buying a Sony, but once he heard the sound, he apologized. Highly recommended.

As someone else already mentioned though, the only negative is no random play of MP3 CDs. Still, for those who are new to DVD and on a budget, this is one buy you won't regret.

Summary: Great deal
Review: Granted I have only owned the Samsung M301 for about a month now, but so far I am highly satisfied. I was looking to buy a high quality player (that didn't look like a shoe box) with a reasonable price tag for now, since I plan on buying a recording player eventually. The Samsung has a sharp picture, and crystal sound. The functions are easy to learn, and the remote can be programmed to your tv also. The player even has a screen-saver and plays back burned cds no problem. The only disadvantage is waiting for the player to "load" when you first turn it on/insert a disc. This takes a few seconds, and doesn't really bother me at all but may annoy the impatient user. But I would (and have) recommended this item to anyone looking for quality, affordability, and style (the Samsung's really light weight, ultra slim, and shiny silver appearance are a definate bonus!

Summary: EXCELLENT AND SEXY TOO!
Review: Great player in a very sleek and sexy looking package. Most other manufacturers units are black and boring. Samsung styling has surpassed Sony's in many of their products these days. Remember anyway the guts are a conglomerate of many manufacturers...The 3D sound is very enjoyable. The headphone jack with volume control is plus that others don't offer.
